Not sure what Spudgate is, but I found this one - 1m08s for the demonstration.

I have a similar safe which I couldn't remember the code for (I believe it once came with keys too, but they've gotten lost at some point)... and needed my passport which was in it. Just placed it on the bed, bounced it with one hand while twisting the lock with the other - second try I got the timing correct. Took less than 10 seconds to open the safe. :disappointed:
Glad I got my passport, not so happy to know I had a piece of junk, instead of what I thought was a small safe.

If you ever buy a proper safe, one that is not vulnerable to potatoes, you need to bolt it down solidly as a thief would be likely to steal the whole safe if they can carry it, or throw it out an upstairs window to try to bust it open.
If I owned one of these I'd fill it with scrap lead or iron to make it heavy and fix the mechanism so that it jams closed permanently and hope if a thief should visit he'll waste his time busting into or humping off my rubbish safe instead of something valuable like my TV.

A safe that is not bolted to a wall is quite useless as it easily can be stolen.

It used to be bolted (to the wall, inside a wardrobe), but we moved it from our house to our flat (as spending more time there) a couple of years ago... and we clearly remembered the code then to be able to move it. Hahaha. Since then it has however just been sitting on the floor in a closet, and by the time I needed my passport we'd forgotten the code.

Yeah, but it's so light and small that it's pointless if you don't screw it to the wall, and if you do, that trick won't work.

that's what the potato is for then.

At first glance I thought this was a microwave, so the potato seemed very appropriate

I'm not quite sure how they are allowed to use the word Safe in the description. It's not a safe it's a metal and plastic box... If you are after a safe spend the 100 quid and get something that's insurance rated.

these seem to be going out of stock fast. I wonder if these are fireproof like the cheap Yale equivalents? Wondering wether I can put my onsite backup drive in it when not in use

Just steel, i.e. not fire proof (nothing is fire proof anyway, just delays the contents getting 'toasted').
