Speaking personally, I'd always recommend more than one drive in a NAS so you can use RAID (redundant array of independent disks) techniques to keep a copy of the data in case one of the NAS drives crashes. FYI I'm running a 7 year old 2 drive Buffalo NAS (configured as RAID 0 - each disc has identical data) and it's been totally reliable (so far). The personal cloud facility on my old NAS has never worked, but that's not a feature I need. Hopefully they've fixed this with newer models.

I presume you mean raid 1 which mirrors data from one drive to another

FYI I'm running a 7 year old 2 drive Buffalo NAS (configured as RAID 0 - each disc has identical data) and it's been totally reliable (so far).
The personal cloud facility on my old NAS has never worked, but that's not a feature I need. Hopefully they've fixed this with newer models.
