Are these HDMI out I'm wondering whether one of these gaming monitors would be good for a PS4?
ra786 to jameswalker457
10 Sep 17 #32
This is Ultrawide. The PS4 does not support that aspect. So you will either have black bars around the sides of the image, or the image will be stretched. Black bars look ugly. A stretched image can look alright in some cases. But really, just don't get an ultrawide monitor specifically for a games console.
jameswalker457 to ra786

Could you recommend a few good candidates for PS4 monitors?

For those interested in this deal it's worth pointing out that you can still get £100 off and free delivery on the LG 34UC79G 34" 21:9 2560 x 1080 curved IPS 144Hz Freesync monitor at Overclockers. Normally £488.99, but £100 and free delivery with code 'LG100'

I got one nearly 2 weeks ago on this deal and it's been fantastic for gaming but I wouldn't want to use it for productivity work. The colours and contrast needed some tweaking to get the best out of it too.

I'm still running a 29" 21:9 LG 29UM67-P which I've loved for a few years, great monitor and worked brilliantly with my R9 290 using freesync.

However I have upgraded to a GTX 1080 TI and am now wishing to upgrade the monitor. Definitely want to stick with 21:9, no going back! Biggest thing I want in improvement is refresh rate, played a bit of Doom last night at max and downsampled which looked great with the only issue being 60Hz leaving motion blur. I think 100Hz minimum, ideally 144.

If I went with a larger screen it'd have to have 1440 lines. TBH, regardless of size think I want 3440x1440.

Two main questions I have:
1) Is Gync necessary when running a 100+Hz panel with a 1080 TI? Looking at some reviews it seems more hassle than it's worth.
2) Think my big problem is going to be HDMI. I need to be able to run this res and more specifically, refresh rate over a HDMI cable as will need to travel up to 7m from the PC, something DisplayPort doesn't seem to like. I've seen some people have success with active 5m DP cables, but think I'm going to struggle.
GTX 1080 TI have HDMI 2.0b which I think is enough bandwidth but many monitors seem to limit the refresh rate on the HDMI port for some reason. Any idea whether there is a 3440x1440 100Hz monitor coming out that supports that spec over HDMI?

Resolution will be fine for gaming, but will look terrible for productivity uses. I add that I bought a 165Hz, 1440p, 27" G-Sync monitor for this price.

Acer xb271hua from Amazon Warehouse deals. Mine was listed as having a "3 inch" scratch on the rear, which turned out to be a mark from unplugging a cable within in the recess containing the rear sockets. Said mark is never seen/covered by cables, and the screen was otherwise perfect. Amazon occasionally drop them to £450 new and when that happens the warehouse deals drop to £400-15ish.

My brother has an ultrawide 144hz monitor, I have 28" 4K G-sync 60hz monitor. We've both played quite a bit on each others rigs and after quite a bit testing we've both agreed the 4K is better. Whilst ultrawide is great, 2160p rules.

I know some people are going to be fuming at what Ive just said but we have access and thoroughly tested both.

For £400 Id personally go for this...

What makes you think that a 4k is better....?

I had a 21:9 at 2160x1080 at 29" and the limitations with the vertical space was not good for my needs.

I have been deliberating between a 28" (ish) 4k or go the other way....

amazon.co.uk/gp/…top

a 35" 3440 x 1440 MVA panel AOC monitor.

4k you are going to need a pretty good GPU, I have a 1080Ti Xtreme card so that should be ok.

The monitor that i linked has the vertical height of a 27" 16:9, with extra width.
Regardless of what I buy I would prefer to deal with Amazon when buying a monitor as it is still very much a panel lottery with what you buy, doesn't matter on cost. Amazon make returns so easy.

Not too sure about the TN panel on the 4k one you listed though over, for example, an MVA or even a "good" IPS.
BassBassBass to VimesUK
10 Sep 17 #34
With 4K you get a higher pixel density, therefore the image is actually just as wide if not wider than an ultrawide at 1080p or 1440p (do you you know what I mean?). When your sat in front of a 28"+ 4K monitor the screen takes up your entire view due to the density of pixels.

4K computing in general is amazing, you can fit so many windows and browsers on the screen i.e two browsers and a 1080p video at the same time, plus some. You get so much more vertical space with 4K. I really suggest trying one out, your card will run pretty much anything in 4K, with a 1080ti your not doing it justice if your not running 4K! I have a gtx 980 and only now having to play newer games in 2K i.e Prey and Witcher 3; upgrading to 1080ti v soon!

General computing and gaming in 4K epic. I have the monitor model before the one I linked and its one of the best purchases Ive ever made. My bro now regrets getting ultrawide. Yes its TN, but give one a whirl.

All the recommendations are welcome, but like I’ve said (and probably similar for others). 144hz at 1080 is achievable on the hardware I have. Although nice 4K 144hz smaller monitors can be had for similar prices, I’d rather the larger size and an actual chance of hitting the high FPS....

10 Sep 17 #30
Not bad but too low res for me, esp. at that screen size.
Tappers13
10 Sep 17 #28
great price great monitor, fantastic for gaming, I have no clue what people are on about. yes the resolution isn't high, but how close to your monitor do you sit? with a 35" you sit an arms length away at least and at that point unless you're trying super hard to hate on the monitor the resolution is excellent. Driving a higher resolution would require a extremely beefy computer which most people do not have. I browsed a while for a high refresh rate monitor and after having sent about 6 back before settling on this one i can tell you the colours are great, response time are good, and the resolution has never ever been a problem

This is a great deal and a great monitor at this price point, although 1440p would be even better. It could always be upscaled with DSR/VSR. Once you've seen 1440p ya kinda don't wanna go back.

I have the LG one. Aspect ratio has more difference than screen res.. if only consoles starter supporting this
jaydeeuk1
9 Sep 17 #11
Kids today moaning about resolution. I remember having the first SVGA capable monitor out of my mates back in very early 90's.

I imagine in another 20 years where 16k/32k Res is the norm they'll be laughing at their parents had to make do with 4k

Great price btw.
mugen6 to jaydeeuk1
10 Sep 17 #14
It's not moaning about the resolution by itself, it's pointing out that you can get a much higher resolution more suited for a screen of this size for not much more money.

In the SVGA days of course there would be people who would laugh at 800x600 when 1024x768 was available for not much more.

At this price I'd prefer to get a 4k TV for gaming over this. Or a 2nd hand Dell U3415W for £400 to £450.
ollie87 to jaydeeuk1
10 Sep 17 #20
I had a 17 inch 1024 x 768 monitor that could handle 90Hz in the early 90s. Six year old me was clearly already part of the PC Master Race.
Flowerdew to jaydeeuk1

I doubt it will go much (if at all) beyond 8k because most people can't tell the difference so it won't make economic sense. If you want some geeky details, see quora.com/At-…ion

People will moan about the 2560x1080 res, but I've tried a couple out at around that size and had a superb experience.
benhawkins to mackashworth
9 Sep 17 #4
Yeah the 1080p aspect didn’t bother me, I only have a GTX1070, and utilising the 144hz is more realistic at that resolution, while still getting more real estate. For this price I was also looking at 1440p 60hz monitors, but for gaming I think the higher refresh will be nicer!

I’ll update when it’s here!
sion22 to mackashworth
10 Sep 17 #17
That is probabaly justified tho, I got a 27inch 1080p screen and it already appear blocky. Tried a 27 inch 1440p at my friends and it look way better. Sharp and clear
I am sure your grandpa remember black and white screen tv too. But i bet you will moan if your TV doesnt have colour. Your arguement is pointless

SamBalmforth
9 Sep 17 #9
You could get a 27" dell ultrasharp for that price which is infinitely better in every way apart from response time/frequency which MOST people don't even care about, I play all my games at 60hz and I never think it's bad as I'm looking at crystal clear deep colour screens.
BurkusCat to SamBalmforth
10 Sep 17 #13
Apart from response time, frequency, curved and ultrawide? Everybody values something different in a monitor.

I think most GPUs would struggle to play games 144Hz 2560x1080.
SamBalmforth to BurkusCat
10 Sep 17 #15
I see your point, I do however believe a good panel with great colour reproduction wows you a lot more than speed, but as you say that's my preference. Curved is a gimmick really!

Was a tenner cheaper bout a week ago. Looking at upgrading my ultrawide 25 inch but not sure what to get. This seems good. Something round this price point.
MysticalUndies
9 Sep 17 #10
This doesn't get great reviews. The LG 34uc79g, same res but IPS, gets better reviews but is slightly more expensive. I personally wouldnt touch this resolution on such a big screen unless I had a weak GPU.
Boxrick
9 Sep 17 #8
So...

2560 x 1080 is a horrific resolution
Not particurly great pixel response time
Not IPS

Still £400...

Asus XR34A can be had for <£500 if you look on Amazon warehouse every now and again and is an order of magnitude better.

I have the LG one with same specs but with IPS screen. People will say that the pixels are bigger than their house and all that jazz but for gaming I'm so freaking happy with it. I see no pixels and I'm pretty close to the MONITOR.
