1 Oct 17#107
Actually, in my experience and backed up by most people who order from Gearbest and comment on HUKD, not paying for any express delivery and having it shipped by Royal Mail (when it gets to the UK that is), is the least likely to attract customs fees.
foo25
1 Oct 17#106
They have apparently shipped mine with Royal Mail, much to my dismay, because now I'm more likely to get hit with customs fees. Tracking hasn't updated as yet either.
I think you're right with their struggle to fulfil orders, and it seems they're just making excuses for the excessive delays. Maybe they're fine normally, but with the influx of orders that likely came with the flash sale, they don't seem to be coping. As you say, probably best avoided for a while.

Having the same experience with Gearbest. Seems from reading other posts on here that lots off people are having problems with deliveries for various items from Gearbest. My order for this printer, placed almost 2 weeks ago, is showing as despatched but the tracking code with yodel shows status of ‘delay’ and notes that the item is still with the seller. Lots of others on here having similar problems, some have had emails from Gearbest blaming customs for delays but seems like it’s too wide an experience on here for that to be true.
It looks to me like Gear best are having serious problems with fulfilling orders. And it’s not just this printer. If you’re thinking of ordering, perhaps avoid Gearbest right now.

Not overly happy with GearBest on this one. Almost 2 weeks on and it has still not shipped. Considering cancelling the order and trying LightInTheBox instead as it ships from Germany...
EDIT: I cancelled the order as they still couldn't tell me when it was going to be dispatched and explained it was going to be a further 7-15 days following that. Requested a refund and ordered with LightInTheBox. Fingers crossed they don't mess me around too!

Are you sure? I paid £109.87 all in for shipping and insurance from there. Dispatched within 24 hours and looks like it's coming from Poland.
Unfortunately, despite GearBest agreeing to cancel my order and refund me, they decided to ship it anyway and keep my money. So now I have 2 printers on the way... and I'm almost certain the one from LightInTheBox will still arrive first!

I took a punt on one of these for my first 3d printer, I came across these sites which had some recommended mods / tips -
I tried to post a few GB and BG deals a few years ago and was curtly told off by a mod that these vendors are not permitted on the site. Fast forward a few years and all you see are such deals, they appear to be 'highlighted' when they are posted, all are stickies and they are reposted daily. The right referral fee can open any door I guess.

15 Sep 17#85
Really depends on size. You get a 0.4mm nozzle out of the box, so you will get 0.4mm widths on the walls, and you could go to around 0.1mm height fairly easily. If you are looking at more detail than that, you can change the nozzle out for a 0.2mm. AFAIK the resolution on the A8 motors should be fine for the smaller detail work!

Not too much, most of the upgrades are slight improvements and quality of life, but it's generally on the list of "you should get this" upgrades and it's been recommended to me. The i3 still gets fantastic reviews, the cr10 is better all round, but it costs more at least here, although if you buy a proper i3 it's actually more expensive. The advantage with the i3 clone kits is they are supposed to be compatible with i3 improvements and accessories and there is a big i3 community. So when it comes to upgrading and tweaking there is both products and help available.
I'm dithering on jumping on this as it's a good deal, or waiting till there is a single kit with the new multiple filmament upgrade.

There's a very active Facebook group for the printer that will have everything you could wish for, though my bought upgrades so far are GT2 belts (practically nothing on aliexpress), borosilicate glass bed for a dead flat surface, a mosfet to route bed power away from the board (a couple quid on ebay) and some higher gauge wire. Printed upgrades are just belt tensioners though I've printed a carriage for an E3D clone but haven't installed yet. Some folks have printed all sorts of stiffeners and braces but I haven't found that I need those.

A 1kg spool of black PLA filament is £15.90 on Amazon with Prime delivery. Quickly importing a random iPhone case into Cura suggests it requires 10g of filament if printed completely solid with 100% infill. Therefore, the case would cost you less than 16p, and the software suggests it'll take around 1.5 hours at normal print quality.
I've been so tempted to buy one of these for a few years now, but just don't think I have the time to play with it, too many other gadgets not getting attention... Plus, my work is full of 3D printers, which I seldom use.

I got this printer a few months back (did not have to pay any customs) and i have been using it constantly since. Just a word of warning to anyone looking to get one the stock power supply is not good enough for the printer you can get better power supplies or use an old ATX power supply from a PC (once the 12v line gives over 30amps) another upgrade you should get two mosfets, the stock printer runs all the current for the heated bed and heated nozzle through the main board which tends to cause it to burn out, bypass this by adding mosfets they are only like 2 pounds each. also change the connector on the heated bed This should eliminate the chance of an electrical fire

Hi there. I am curious about these 'i3' printers. The description of this one says it has an acrylic frame. But didn't I hear (previously here HDUK) that this type of 3d printer is better / more accurate if it has a metal frame? Or has the plastic frame advanced now so that is not actually true anymore? Thanks for any insights.
Also there was another thing I wished to enquire about: its hard for me to find other 3d printers with any larger work area than this one. Even ones that costs a lot more, the work area is still only about 8 inches square. I find this hard because I would also like to be able to print wider items. For example 12 inches x 8 inches.

I have this model - it's actually a decent printer, if you take the time to build it correctly - and building it gives you a better insight into them.
Are they worth it? That depends on you, any hobby or interest requires effort from you - some people who buy them have little to no imagination and end up printing a few knick-knacks before getting bored. The same folk can't handle their disappointment and usually end up telling everyone they can that 3D printers aren't worth it.
Purely from an educational standpoint, they're worth the effort - get your kids involved in the assembly and testing - try out some 3D modelling software and encourage them to get creating.
However, even if you can't handle simple 3D modelling software to create your own stuff, there are a some great sites out there with loads of free designs for everyday things.
This is a good price - heat added.
p.s. spend another £7 or £8 and buy an auto-level sensor - it plugs into the Z axis limit switch port on the PCB - it'll make life a lot easier.

The Ebay listing has a Melzi controller board which as a design is about five years old. They're trying to pass it off as an Anet A8 as they're using the same chassis, and calling it a 'mk8' .The Gearbest is a genuine Anet with this years design of controller board.

another upgrade you should get two mosfets, the stock printer runs all the current for the heated bed and heated nozzle through the main board which tends to cause it to burn out, bypass this by adding mosfets they are only like 2 pounds each. also change the connector on the heated bed
This should eliminate the chance of an electrical fire
Also there was another thing I wished to enquire about: its hard for me to find other 3d printers with any larger work area than this one. Even ones that costs a lot more, the work area is still only about 8 inches square. I find this hard because I would also like to be able to print wider items. For example 12 inches x 8 inches.
Highly recommended. It's a great printer for the money, lots of fun to build and tweak with printed upgrades. It's more than earned its keep for me and the kids. Figurines, phone mounts, Raspberry Pi Cases, fidget spinners and of course lego!

FOR 113.99 WHICH IS IN THE UK, QUICKER DELIVERY AND CHEAPER!
I got my A8 from Gearbest - if you select the standard delivery option it'll come within 2 weeks via Yodel (And likely no customs charges - like everything from Gearbest I've got with Yodel delivery).

So if you are only wanting to assemble and be able to print Star Wars models, masks, light sabres from the off then 3D printing is not for you.
The frame also looks like the old version ANet one.
I would stay well clear of the eBay one.
The gearbest one which I bought has a great thriving community of people helping one an other with models upgrades a general help.
i'm really happy with mine
Either way get it from the eBay link I posted for cheaper.
I ordered one and granted I had to wait 3 weeks but I got no extra charges.
Heat on dud deal continues to rise.
Bizarre.
