This is not the Iphone Upgrade programme.
It is also not Paypal payments nor Barclays Iphone financing.
All the above are available online.

This is IPHONE PAYMENTS, and is available through Apple stores only.
It is financed through Barclays but is basically the phone 0% over 20 months.

Iphone 8 64gb £31.50 a month. £69 deposit.
Iphone 8 256gb £39 a month. £69 deposit
Iphone 8 Plus 64gb £36.50 a month. £69 deposit.
Iphone 8 Plus 256bg £44 a month. £69 deposit.
Iphone X 64gb £46.50 a month £69 deposit
Iphone X 256gb £54 a month £69 deposit.

Pair this with a cheap sim only deal, it will beat any carrier contract deal hands down over the term and all SIM only plans are max 12 months so free to move carrier if they are useless.

The phone is unlocked and you can use whatever carrier sim in it and change at any time.

This Iphone Payments offer is hidden away on the Apple website, my link is the upgrade program but on that page there is a link "Learn more about iphone payments) and all details are there.

Obviously it is dependent on you finding stock of the model you want instore.
Please see terms on the page re documentation needed instore when attending. (as per normal credit application).

Theres no sales tax on the $999 , the actual difference between US and Uk is about 10%

i would say it depends if you want apple care with your phone.. if you do, I would say yes go with the upgrade programme and make sure you upgrade next year. if you are not fussed about apple care, get this. its what I am going to do as I have phone insurance with my bank. if I want to get the new one next year, it will sell for about the remainder you have to pay off your contract. sell it, pay it off and get the new one.

If i am correct you pay 2 taxes in most states in USA, example New York sales tax is 4% and state tax 4.8% so total tax is 8.8%

iPhone x is $999 + tax of £87 total to pay $1086 now convert this its to GBP its £830 a difference of £170

so if your buy in Delaware for example thee is no tax to pay so its $999 covert to GBP its £763 a difference of £236

At the end of the day if you can afford to buy the iPhone x and your an apple fan then buy it, who cares what other think its your money.

Everyone going on about $999 vs £999. It's not $999. That is before tax! Different states have different tax rates. £999 is the price after tax in the UK. Go and spend £200 for a plane ticket to USA and buy the phone in the US if you care that much?

People moaning about the price of the new iPhones. People spend thousands on a holiday for a week or tens of thousands on a wedding for one day. You’ll use your iPhone everyday for the next two year or however long you’ll have so work that out per day. It ain’t that much.

Apple have done this finance deal because they know full well that the phone costs FAR too much for the average person. Ooooh, let's make it "free" so you can have the nice shiny thing now and then we'll cross the 'selling your kids into slavery' bridge when we want you to start paying for it in a year's time. More often than not the debt rolls on and on and they end up paying many times more for that shiny thing they couldn't afford than they would have if they could have afforded it!!

Glad to see people going for "cheaper" phone only deals, especially on 0%. But ... can I just say...

£1000

for a phone

....

£1000

Really??

I'm all for cutting edge tech, I bought an expensive TV and not adverse to paying out, but £1000 for a phone seems totally, utterly, insane to me.

If you don't buy them they won't sell them at this price...

madness.

You realise that’s just the phone, right? Paying for it over 24 months. £32 x 24 = £768 for a 32gb iPhone 8 Plus. Subject to you also getting a SIM card from Sky, which starts at £5 a month for 500mb a month. So add at least £120 on top of the £768 for the phone.

I’ve no idea why you seem to be under the impression that Sky’s iPhone prices also include an unlimited everything SIM. If only that were true!

To all the posters replying to my initial comment about sales tax and pointing out that it is <20% in US states, I thought I had made it clearer in my follow-up post.

My point is that Apple itself is not really ‘ripping us off’ on the iPhone X pricing in the UK as much as many people think*.

1. US pricing does not include sales tax; UK pricing includes sales tax (VAT).

2. Local currency markets have to be accounted for.

Apple do not set either of the above, so they should be ‘factored’ out.

*in fact, Apple have set the iPhone X price in the UK the same as the US, if you EXCLUDE sales taxes AND assume the historically lowest local exchange rate. (They would actually LOSE profit in the UK if the £ falls below the $1.20 mark).

It would be good if people that are interested in Samsung/Google/LG/Sony/HTC/Motorola phones or the countless cheap Gearbest supplied Chinese equivalents commented on those threads instead.

Educate yourself. The iPhone uses a secure enclave where your security data (fingerprints, face scan) is stored inside. It is not possible to get this information out, only overwrite. It would be like complaining that a website that stores your password as an MD5 salted hash would be able to expose your password because they store the hash. Complete nonsense. It's one way and one way for a reason.

I presume you live under the local bridge? - Why? Because it puts a roof over your head and its a fraction of the cost.
I presume you wear roller skates? - Why? Because it gives you wheels to get about and its a fraction of the cost.
I presume you were bin bags as clothing? - Why? Because it provides you with clothing and its a fraction of the cost.
I presume you walk to the local mecca bingo for a holiday? - Why? Because it provides you with alllll the GILF's you could need and its a fraction of the cost of mexico.

Same old tired rhetoric on hotukdeals and most of it comes down to "i dont have the free cash to be able to buy that so its obviously a negative that others should not either"

Never understood the mentality of someone who spends time in a thread which doesnt interest them just to say they don't want to buy it. Android, a freebie knockoff OS from an advertising company which ripped off BB followed by ripping off iOS, added 99% of the viruses and scams, fragmented OS with under 10% on the latest features (vs 90% on iOS), is hardly something to get excited about.

I agree, 1.5% in the bank for 20 months would be £25 - I wont turn my nose up at that. It's just that credit deals inherently attract people that can't afford to pay off all at once. However, If someone wants to pay £1000 for a phone and keeps the money somewhere ready to pay back in 20 months then this is a great deal for them. Unfortunately I don't think that applies to the masses though.

I've not read every single comment on this thread so apologies if someone has already raised the same concern.

i have a slight issue with the Op's decision to quote "£46.50" for this "deal". From what I can see this relates to one phone option which is £46.50 / month for 20 months. A quick calc in my head here but that's £930 I believe?

so surely the clearest indicator to others is that this is the total not this singular £46.50 payment?

This just smacks of not wanting to quote the total price because it's RRP and therefore wouldn't attract much heat!

Edit: even worse there's a £69 deposit to factor in to so £999. So the Hotukdeals "Buy for £46.50" link above is even further from being accurate.

I can't give this any heat for that reason

Ah right, I, wrongly, assumed that where it said available without apple care, actually meant the upgrade plan was available without it. Slightly misleading.

I don't normally Down vote deals on the basis of not agreeing with the products Worth instead of the specifics of the deal in question. CABellamy
21 Sep 17 #263
What I can't seem to work out is how this is 0%. Take for example you want to buy a 256GB iPhone 8 Plus. To buy outright it's 949.00. This offer requires an upfront payment of £69, then 20 monthly payments of £52.45 which totals £1,118 that's 17% more expensive than buying outright. There's definitely a finance charge there, which I work out as 2.75% APR. Apple state it is a 0% offer but then charge you more for it? Why not just be upfront about it? Surely this is false advertising. Can somebody explain to me how this works because the raw numbers just don't add up.

A number of people keep mentioning Samsung's standard 2 year warranty in comparison to apple's 1 year.
That's the very least that company should offer given their exploding note 7 situation. Even with a 2 year warranty, I wouldn't trust hardware from Samsung. I had 2 galaxy s3's that overheated back in the day and turned themselves off.

Not much, vodafone are offering 15% discount if you work for specific companies. EE are offering 20% to students.
Bossworld
21 Sep 17 #259
Are many networks offering discounts this time out? (Admittedly I've not researched at this point but sometimes if you can get an employee discount it can work out cheaper).

I'm coming to the end of my 6S (which to be honest, at the time I was fairly staggered to see a deal in the first month as they never used to discount on the cheaper tarriffs - £31 a month for the 64GB and 3GB data/unltd everything else).

From the looks of it, O2 Refresh is basically just paying the phone off for 24 months and I could probably get a cheaper sim only (much the same technique as described on this deal).

Remember the early 2000s when the phone cost was truly subsidised? Guess the networks are a little knackered given that people aren't texting or calling as much as they used to, and the only way they can try and recoup the cash is to charge massive amounts for data.
DemonIT
21 Sep 17 #258
Some people may not be as informed as you.

The "new Psion 5" with Mobile capability - 'Gemini' planetcom.co.uk/ will be around £500 when launched in December.
The X should be £799.00 not £999
the iPhone 8 is really an incremental upgrade iPhone 7 S
ben1979
21 Sep 17 #252
Mine was more a poke of fun, but your reply helps prove my underlying point. The Psion 5 (a tech hall of famer in my eyes!), was a PDA, where are the calls etc. So even that is not a comparable item. But, based purely on the governments own inflation calculator, the £499 Psion is worth £833.43 in todays money. Now that is a more realistic comparison!

In fact, using the same calculator demonstrates that your £699 iphone 6 that you purchased in 2014 is £718 in todays money. More expensive than the new 64gb iphone 8, which has crammed more tech in! Go figure (no pun intended!)

You cant compare hotel room cost 30 years ago to tech cost.

A Psion Series 5 was £499 when laucnced in 1997 20 years ago, this is a better comparison. The "Gemini" will be around £500 when launched in December planetcom.co.uk/

You could also use the Big Mac index, many analysts do-
so a
£2.95 2014 Big Mac
would now cost
£4.19
based on iPhone 6 to iphone X price increase in 3 years.
eddibabyyeah
21 Sep 17 #245
Whatever your opinion about apple and whether the 8 or X is good value or not is sort of irrelevant. This deal is the best way of getting the device. If you compare this deal side by side with with a pay monthly offer, this is way cheaper. I am currently with three, so I have done a comparison with them, as follows based on iphone 8 64GB

Buy phone from apple on 20 months @ £31.50 * 20 + £69 = £699
Three Advanced plan 12GB data £14 per month * 24 months = £336
Total cost over two years is £1035. This includes phone & 2 years data, calls and texts

or

Get the phone on a two year contract from three on the same tariff as above for £55 per month + £79 Upfront
=£1399 over two years

Total saving by getting the device from apple is £364 over two years. Which is £15 per month.

Yeah, and the average room rate for a hotel in Florida 30 years ago was $19, today it is $237, that's a 1300% increase, so it's not inconceivable to think then, that in another 30 years, a week in a hotel could cost you $20k!

Sounds ridiculous doesn't it, as does your rhetoric!

Also, heat to anyone that get's the reference!

I remember the days when you did have to! £40 a month for a Philips Fizz with 20 mins of free calls a month! Before the days of internet on your phone! 20 years ago!

An argument could be had for it 'only' being £40, but when people can and do do an awful lot on their mobile phones, without the need to own a laptop? You can understand why the prices are as they are! The poor exchange rate hasn't helped either, and apple aren't the only ones to have adjusted prices due to this. However, if you want a phone to make calls, send texts, a little bit of browsing/social media etc? Then people are looking in the wrong place! Just my two-pennies worth.

For me, this deal is hot, apple never normally hit out lengthy terms on 0% finance. It's not for me, as I am more than happy with my current daily driver (iphone 7 256gb).

This really isn’t true, it’s pretty much an urban legend.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I have a top spec Android phone, and a top spec iPad - they both perform equally and fantastically well. Although the App Store may have more apps available, hundreds of thousands of them are just ‘filler’, all useful and popular apps are available on both platforms, each with equally impressive functionality.

I paid £699.00 in Sept 2014 for my 128GB iphone 6
The iPhone X at £999.00 represents a 42.92% increase in 3 years over my model.
I know there is new tech inside but the.increase i outrageous.

Based on this the base model iPhone 2020 will be approx £1400!!!! we are moving into Macbook Pro territory

ps
I notice the OP and the apple screenshotdoes not include the cost, ie £46.50 PM sounds better that putting £999.00 etc

It's still more regardless of currency exchange ....
Also apple does not reduce prices until new product release so as the time passes and manufacturing is less expensive they earn even more ... See the problem here ?

Apple are one of the few companies which actually can increase sales of their products by increasing prices . Apple is an aspirational brand and the iPhone X has some seriously cutting edge tech inside mainly around face recognition and AR ( Augmented reality) The Apple hardware and software work seamlessly together compared to Android and the quality of App Store and apps is far superior to android. Yes the iPhone X is expensive compared to other flagship phones but as an iPhone 6 owner this is the time to upgrade for me.
I absolutely recommend buying he phone either on 0% with a sim only or so the upgrade program which is in effect also 0% over 20 months with AppleCare included.
Network 24 month deals are a rip off . You will end up paying at least £200 or more in hidden interest on these deals on average on a flagship phone.
My final advice is also wait at least a month or so before buying to avoid first production units. Often first production run units will have manufacturing defects and issues which get ironed out on second and then third production runs. I personally will wait until New Year to but the X . I hope this helps some people . 3 are doing some very competitive SO deals right now too.

I think its near on impossible to prove fault was present on day one (unless there has been a 'recall').

Without sounding like a parrot, these iPhones need a standard apple 24month warranty, appleCare adding a year if purchased- making a 3 year warranty.

Apple wont do it as they make a fortune from appleCare, and 2nd year "out of warranty repair" revenue, plus iOS slows down dramatically on year 2 to 3 with updates, ensuring that folks have to buy new iPhone

I really considered the iphone X, but in the end got the Samsung S8 and saved myself £500. In all honesty I installed a series of apps to make it look like an iphone

same lock screen
same icons / docking bar
same notifier
same quick swipe for settings
same noises
Same Keyboard
ability to swipe back from the left like in safari

It made the phone look dated and in some cases harder to use. so this is what I did;

same lock screen - took it off back to android
same icons / docking bar - took it off, made the phone look very dated
same notifier - again removed and stuck with android, looks slicker
same quick swipe for settings - removed, but used an app to swipe up, Android one had more quick touch settings and can customise
same noises - kept
Same keyboard - kept
ability to swipe back from the left like in safari - kept and i can swipe back in any app, an improvement!

What i'm saying is Android has apps to do everything that iOS does, you just have to install an app. I've always been an apple fan but after having the phone for a few days, I know it was the right move such a difference.

I agree with what most have said ive always had an iphone, but its not ahead of the game anymore. Android has caught up.

Just like any credit deal, it's great for those that are responsible - why pay it all up front when you could pay it off monthly at 0% and have that extar cash sitting in a high interest savings account in the mean time? There are always those that think oh I can afford £40 per month... just, then get into trouble a few months in - the thing is if there weren't people like this to make profit for the banks, there would be no 0% deals for the rest of us.

The 2 year EU law applies in the UK but we have even better protection, although neither are as good as the standard warranty as you have to prove the device was faulty at the point of sale.

Apple have a link to warranty information from every page of their website, and the stores are fully aware too.

God, there are some isheep on here. These people are exactly why Apple can just keep upping the margin, and overcharging UK customers. If the supposed justification for the price matching $ to £ is real justification, why hasn’t it been done on all the other products? The reason is Apple thinks a starting price under £1000 will wash with isheep.
Analysts are already saying the margin on this phone is huge. Great for me, my pension holds Apple shares as isheep push it to the first 1 trillion dollar company.

Though this probably works out cheaper than buying a phone contract with phone included, as the OP suggests (which technically does make it a good deal compared to the exact same elsewhere) - I simply cannot vote hot on a deal that promotes consumer credit like this.

There is a huge consumer debt bubble forming so don't think people who can't, or are close to not being able to afford this should put themselves in that position.
Obviously this will make financial sense for some - Just make good long term financial decisions guys and buy within your means.

20 Sep 17 #195
inaccurate and rather misleading post.

not a single state in USA has a 20% tax, only the UK has a 20% rate. in USA it ranges from 0% in some states to a max of around 10% in a few select states (these are combined state + highest local rates). and the average across USA as a whole is 6.52%.

using this average of 6.52% = $1065 / £783 (average price of iphone X in USA)

so £783 (USA) vs £999 (UK) is a more accurate comparison - and a clearer illustration of the rip-off

So...the new phone is faster than the last, just the innovation we really need isn't it as we were all grumbling about how slow our o/s and games were? I don't use CAD or rendering on a phone so it's all just a numbers game to detract from a disappointing unveiling. And wireless charging...great..just a couple of years late to the party then. Apple used to innovate and you can't tell me facial recognition emojis are the leap we're looking for. Seems to me like apple are chasing the pack now when it comes to tech, every function (tiny bezel, larger form factor, wireless charging) is announced like apple just ripped it off their R&D bench and proclaimed this great leap to the world, when other manufacturers had it on the market. Apples market share will continue to fall while they roll out old tech at a premium price. £1k for a phone?? They'll still be shouting about a new phone jack while Samsung are making foldable screens...

Completely wrong.

The iPhone 8 & X are the fastest phones ever produced by a long shot. Fact.
(A painful truth for Samsung fanboys) And thats with less RAM and less cores than Samsung S8 - so they must be doing something right.

Even the ancient iPhone SE beats the S8 on some tests.
The S8 is only just faster than the iPhone 7. So the X is well and truely into the flagship phone range.

If you don't then you'll have the option to leave it or buy it at full price sim free.

Then process is pretty painless, did it for my 7 last year.

Now I'm having moments of madness's and thinking of doing it for the X, and maybe selling the 7 and paying off my current one.

I love the majority of Apple products, I currently own;

10.5" Cellular iPad Pro (just made better by iOS11, for those asking)
13" MacBook Pro Retina
12" MacBook Retina
27" iMac
Top spec Mac mini
Airpods
And lots of other accessories, Pencil, Superdrive etc.

But here's the thing - iPhones are terrible.

I always go with Android flagships, my current one is a HTC U11 and it's totally fantastic, it really is.

I managed to pick it up brand new for just £440 (but would still highly recommend it at it's £649 RRP) and I have a SIM only unlimited/unlimited/18GB EE contract with EE @ £16.99.

So, using the 24m calculation, phone and contract equates to £35.32 per month.

Double standards... protection against £ going down, but will happily keep the profit if it does not go down or appreciates! Really?

If they are so worried about currency fluctuation, they should start accepting $ payments in UK Apple stores. I will be more than happy to pay in $ and take whatever conversion rate my card company or PayPal offers me.

Any electrical item in the EU has a two year warranty. Buying from JL would make no difference.

The European Directive 1999/44/EC says all EU countries have to ensure a retailer could be held liable for all “non-conformities” which manifest within two years from delivery.

I think SOGA is 6 years?

Is anyone else not surprised that a phone is pushing £1000, it’s pretty much replacing a standard phone and a tablet at just shy of 6 inches. We just need Apple to adopt the Microsoft route of docking the phone and running native programs and you can ditch your £1000+ MacBook too (granted Microsoft didn’t get that quite right)

20 Sep 17 #145
You’re better off buying a phone and putting it onto a 0% balance transfer card and spread the payments. Sell your current phone to get the price down. For example. I’ll be getting the iPhone X and paying £43 a month for it. Unlimited minutes. Unlimited texts and 30gb of data by haggling with EE for a good sim only deal.

So is there any way to preorder the iPhone X and make use of this finance deal if it's in store only?
When preorders open online next month, will it require the whole payment upfront or is it a deposit/reservation?
plewis00
20 Sep 17 #143
Upgrade program you have to have AppleCare+ and never own the old handset at month 12 if you choose to upgrade. This scheme is just outright financing the sim-free price of the phone with a small deposit and no interest charges.
plewis00
20 Sep 17 #142
I always justified it as 'price of a cup of coffee a day' and the 'non-organic thing I probably interact with most on a daily basis' so I don't really resent paying for the newest or most up to date (not necessarily best) experience.

I'm intrigued what percentage of people actually buy it interest free vs outright, I suspect a lot of people are going beyond their actual affordability with this new handset.

USA does not have VAT included.. so $999 will be plus whatever the state Tax rate is.. ALSO exchange rate can't be counted because in the USA you earn a dollar, you spend a dollar.. in the UK you earn a pound you spend a pound.. so you can't say the exchange rate makes it more expensive or cheaper unless you live in the USA and earn ££ or if you live in the UK and earn $$.. then the exchange rate affects you.

Thanks for posting. This is going to work out a lot cheaper for me! I get through a lot of minutes and about 5gb of data. So, I'm going for a £14 a month 3 sim only, unlimited minutes and texts and 12 gb of data. Then buy the phone I want on this deal. I was going to get one anyway, this is by far the cheapest option. Thanks again.

Just yesterday there was a feature on BBC News about how over 20% of people in some cities have problematic levels of debt. Then you see "deals" like this and think "no wonder".

Some will try to defend these companies and their lending practices, but the reality is that payment plans are nothing more than an expolitative measure to allow people to buy something they could not otherwise afford.

What's worse is that most of these "interest free" products are luxuries; things that people don't even need.

I most certainly am not of the Android camp, I've got the 5S, 7+, 2xiPad Air 2 and a MBP13...plus a draw full of older devices. It's just £1149 is a stupid sum for a phone, even £999 (I'm not halfing my storage for an extra £180).

Apple Care on the iPhone X is £199. The excess is £79 (£25 for screen issues). So an AppleCare repair is going to cost £278. As with any insurance, if you can afford/survive the worst case, self-insure.

Dodge62
20 Sep 17 #123
Not very relevant if you have to leave it there. Bring it back and you'll pay their 6% and our 20% (you can't reclaim sales tax from the US the way UK visitors can reclaim VAT when they leave), which would kill all your savings.

Of course you could smuggle it in. But then if you're a criminal why not just nick it in the first place? Much cheaper then.
hobsgrg
20 Sep 17 #122
Yes same happened to me excellent credit rating and i have a credit card with them but was turned down. Barclays use their own criteria for approving loans and from discussion on Macrumors seem to be picky about who they approve without any obvious rhyme or reason as to who they approve so your credit rating is useless in predicting if you'll get approve or not. I traveled 50 miles to get there so just paid the full amount up front to avoid a wasted journey, its a big pain you don't know if you'll be accepted or not beforehand.

Ok, "cheaper to fly to Delaware, buy one in $ and fly back"

In case it wasn't obvious I wasn't suggesting anybody actually do this, just making a point about the unfair pricing. However you could - and get a free trip to boot

An unscrupulous individual who was paranoid about customs would just discard/post home the packaging separately and avoid import duty.

Finally, to all the android fanboys ridiculing the price, remember the "cost" is not equal to the price. When I upgrade and get 75% of the outlay back it will have cost me £250. Good luck getting 75% residual on a Samsung, lol.

Apple must be so ashamed of how old looking iPhone 8 is that most photos of it are showing back of the phone, just the size you will probably look at just once when you buy this thing.
thecynicalsaint
20 Sep 17 #112
Read previous comments on how to do the correct comparison. Sales taxes have nothing to do with Apple so no point comparing the Florida 6% with our 20%.

As someone has also said, our additional consumer protections will contribute to the price and they are probably upping the price given the volatility of our currency while Brexit talks are ongoing.

At the end of the day, you will always find that some items are cheaper in the US than here, whilst some others are cheaper here than there.
thecynicalsaint
20 Sep 17 #111
Completely agree with this. I had the first one, 3GS, and 4S and thought they were all brilliant and miles ahead of anything else at the time. Each one also had big changes from the previous iteration so the price was one I could justify.

I have a 6S now mainly because my 4S was getting interminably slow and like the big screen but did not feel like the rest of changes were as revolutionary as previous iterations. Certainly didn't feel like I was paying for a huge leap forward as in the past.

I don't see anything in any of the new models that would tempt me to upgrade a 6S.

Funnily enough I just looked up the price of the Pixel XL 128GB on Googles website and it came to £819.

Bear in mind Google used to be popular for their much cheaper Nexus lines.

Samsung also launched the Note 8 at £869 as well (add a 200GB card and it's over £900), the Note 3 cost around £550 on launch.

The only thing I have noticed is that the other OEMs may bring down their prices more, but then you have the issue of support OS wise so it could end up being a false economy.

US sales tax varies between states from 0 to 10%. You could pick it up in one of the few states that has no sales tax and the phone would cost you $999 around £740. According to this little chart, we in the UK are just above average in the great Apple Rip off

I tried the IUP route last year with the 7 plus and got denied credit despite banking with Barclays with a Barclays credit card with an exemplary credit rating.

It's a shame that they do not do 0% online through PayPal which for me would be the best option without the hassle of getting to an Apple Store and possibly getting turned down again.

Still saying all of the above having the freedom to pick and choose the best sim only contract is a definite plus and your not locked into a very expensive mobile phone contract.

I'm iOS all the way but when my best friend (who got iPhone from Blackbury becase of ME) iPhone 6S played up 6 months out of Warranty ie 18 months old £599.00 apple wanted £375.00 to fix "out of Warranty" So....

Luckly she bought from John Lewis. (on MY advice).

These items do go wrong after 12months so....buy from John Lewis 24 month warranty or consider AppleCare

Main point though is at these prices apple should offer 24 month warranty as Samsung do.

Buy it then, but at a time when the average handset price is falling, Apple are choosing to massively increase prices; it costs almost the same for a 64GB 8+, as my 7+ 128GB cost, and that's a handset with very minimal change. I suspect a 1:1 pricing will become more common as time goes on, at least while brexit is ongoing (there have been predictions of the rate going down further), even Amazon with the Fire 10 is doing this ($149/£149).

To those struggling to get discounts through contracts, I'd suggest checking to see if they do a discount based on your employer and/or waiting for the initial rush to die down.

As soon as there's regular stock, chances are they'll be more willing to discount although good luck with Vodafone (most they offered was 15% off because of work or 20% off the older models (got 40% off a Note 4 two years back)).

Could also try contacting disconnections and requesting a transfer code, using a different sim free deal I managed to get a decent sim only creating a lower TCO.

using iphone 8s 256mb at £949/$949

US Price is $949 excudling Sales Tax = £700
£700 + 20% VAT = £840
Now add on the average 9% sales tax in the US
$1034 = £762

So its £80 difference - yet apple have to ship the phones further and give us different plug adapter for a smaller market, as well as change the phone spec to meet EU specifications.

If exchange rates went back to £1 = $1.50 Then the phone would be cheaper here than the US.

Five states do not have statewide sales taxes: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Of these, Alaska and Montana allow localities to charge local sales taxes.

The five states with the highest average combined state and local sales tax rates are Louisiana (9.98 percent), Tennessee (9.46 percent), Arkansas (9.30 percent), Alabama (9.01 percent), and Washington (8.92 percent).

The five states with the lowest average combined rates are Alaska (1.76 percent), Hawaii (4.35 percent), Wyoming (5.40 percent), Wisconsin (5.42 percent), and Maine (5.5 percent).

Voted hot. I don't think I'll make the jump from my iPhone 7 yet, but decent way of not being tied to a phone provider if that's what you want.

Right, best be off to storm the Samsung forums and ask what the point is of buying a £400 phone when a Nokia is only £200, followed by cruising the Mercedes forums to ask what the point is in paying £50k for a Merc when you can get a Dacia for £15k. On second thought - I don't want a Samsung or a Dacia, I have no interest in them and personally I don't like them, so I won't waste my time entering forums and posts that aren't relevant to me, unless I was a troll?

I don't think this is technically a deal, but that doesn't matter. It is very useful to know for those wanting an iPhone as for many it's the only way they can afford one without being strapped down to a contract for 2 years. Heat from me.

That said, I think this new iPhone X is the most overpriced tech Apple have produced to date. Back in the 3G/3GS days they were overpriced but I didn't care, nobody came close to the iOS experience. The camera was poor, they lack certain tech that was standard on Android phones...didn't matter one bit, as they were absolutely fantastic to use while Android was clunky and hard work in comparison.

This isn't the situation anymore and I think Apple are living on a well marketed illusion that they are still 'different'. I don't think facial recognition and some gimmicky emoji's befit a company that used to revolutionise the way we interacted with technology. Disappointing. Don't get me wrong, their phones are great phones, but there are plenty of great phones now; there used to be just one.

I updated last night. Download happened at full speed so they must have sorted the slow speeds that have hampered the process in previous years.

The phone feels exactly the same (speed wise - iphone 6s plus). I cannot really see anything that looks dramatically different, couple of minor tweaks to the control panel, although to my eyes the majority of changes look to be visual. Not sure I like the black large text heading in all of the screens.

Much of a muchness. Not bad, but not really anything better. Seems stable so far, no problems as yet and no battery issues that I had when iOS 10 launched.

The main issue is that the iPhone X is 999 dollar in USA which is £734 in UK.

Yet Apple has the cheek for the first time ever to match the UK price to USA, with no change for the exchange rate!
Eotris to suarez777
20 Sep 17 #14
OK - I'll say it before anyone else: US prices EXCLUDE sales taxes. A fairer comparison is to add 20% for the UK sales tax (VAT), i.e.

$999 + 20% = $1199

At current conversion rate of £1= $1.36, iPhone X = ~£881 cf. £999

Yes, still a rip-off, but not by as much as you suggest.

Is there a list of sales tax by state?

As far as I know, some states have 0% tax. So do we compare ur analysis against those states with 0% tax or those with 10%?

Also NY tax is way less than 20%
Eotris to suarez777
20 Sep 17 #24
I am not trying to be argumentative, but as Apple has no control of sale taxes in any country, I fail to see your point?

Maybe, if I reverse the argument it would be clearer: to have a fairer comparison, we should strip out sales taxes, i.e.

iPhone X (US) = $999
iPhone X (UK) = £999 - 20% VAT = £832.50 = ~$1132

A difference of ~$132, which can be explained by Apple hedging on the currency market (£ has fallen as low as $1.20, which would coincidentally equate to $999, i.e the same price).
suarez777 to Eotris
20 Sep 17 #28
Valid point.

End of the day as a consumer I am seeing this as the final price available to consumer. iPhone X in NY is $999 * 1.09 sales tax = c$1100, which is still roughly £200 more than UK. However ignoring all operational expenses.

Also this is the first time Apple has ever introduced equal pricing too, despite UK reducing corporation taxes to 15%, not 20%.
gary333 to suarez777
20 Sep 17 #32
This is where you are making a mistake. Apple is a business, they price according to what they want to make (margin) on a product. The way you compare is by converting the base US price with the UK price. You then add our 20% VAT on.

You don't add 20% to the US price and convert, nor do you add the US sales tax on and convert.

VAT is a price our government have decided is what we must pay, not the company.
suarez777 to gary333

I added 9% sales from NY.
ebaysniper to suarez777
20 Sep 17 #18
My thoughts exactly. It also seems that the OFT (Office of fair trading) are not interested in even looking into this. Still a large number of people will buy the product on credit cards without batting an eyelid.

Also, Samsung offered a massive trade-in offer for people who still had the Note 7, but of course that offer was not available to anyone in the UK. Again OFT not interested.
tomwatts to ebaysniper
20 Sep 17 #40
Get a grip mate. The OFT isn't designed to dictate the prices companies set. Apple have chosen to do this - let them do this. I think it's mad paying this much for a phone but you know why they've done it? Because people will buy it. If you could charge a thousand pounds for something worth less and know that people will still buy it then you would. Your argument about the prices of everything loses traction when we think about prices in 3rd world countries compared to ours as they have everything cheaper!!
gary333 to suarez777
20 Sep 17 #31
I am not sure what is confusing about what he said.

As the guy above pointed out your conversion is misleading as sellers in the UK must include VAT, however in the USA the sales tax is not included.

The fairest way is to convert the US price to UK and then add on our 20% VAT.

Apple products (being a US company) will always add margin on the products for multiple reasons, 1) to guard against currency exchange fluctuations, 2) To contribute towards the higher cost of doing business i.e.EU/UK have much higher degrees of consumer protection and 3) To account for other taxes and tariffs and even marketing.

Apple will have pegged the price based on late August / early September exchange rate of £1 = $1.28 - $1.30. Using these figures we can take $999 and convert to pounds (let's say £1 = $1.30) = £768, then add VAT = £922 thus mark up is £77.

As we have seen shifts in the exchange rate that benefit us $999 / 1.357 = £737.70 now we add on our VAT giving us a US to UK comparative rate of £885 thus £114 higher.

Just one week has swung the difference £37. Now see why products in the UK cost more for US companies? What would have happened if the currency devalued to $1.25 the iphone would only be £39 more than US.
suarez777 to gary333
20 Sep 17 #33
Understand but exchange has historically been volatile, so we cant cherry pick dates. Also assume Apple has plenty of exchange rate derivatives to protect from this anyway.

Apple historically has never done this before, even Samsung Note 8 is pricing is fairer for UK citizens.

End of the day, Apple knows that its brand loyalty is the best and people still still buy if its £900 or £1000.

No point arguing over this, there are 100s other factors, like brand loyalty.
gary333 to suarez777
20 Sep 17 #37
How do you think companies base line a price. They pick dates, this isn't finger a finger in the air job! The rate for the last 12 months averages out at around £1-$1.27.

Samsung is not a US company

Anyway as you are quite clearly here just to grind your axe we can safely say the likely average differential is not anywhere near what you were originally quoting.

Looks decent, but taking a sim only can cost unto £15 depending on what network and what you require. Vodafone are offering this:

£1662 over 24 Months for an iphone 8 plus

The maths work out cheaper for a 20 month Plan from apple and a sim only deal for the X 256GB.

However I do understand everyones monthly budget , upfront cost , term preference are all different.

Not a great deal.
Let's break down this cost.

£68 a month x 24 plus £30 up front = £1662
Take away the RRP at the moment.
£1662 - £949 = £713
£713 is the cost of the 60gb sim over 24 months.
£713 divided by 24 = £29.70 a month..

So you're paying more

Cheaper options

32039345-VG3aT.jpg
Even the most expensive option for 100gb is cheaper than Vodafone at £25 a month.

Most people will use the £18 deal as 30gb is a lot of data.
MrMoneySavingExpert
20 Sep 17 #36
Have heat. However if you're a loyal customer with EE, Three etc you can get a better deal on those networks with retentions. You have to get past the first line potatoes though. As they have no power.

With my 7 plus 128gb I paid nothing up front (haggle) and £45.99 a month for two year contract. (loyalty)
25gb of data, unlimited minutes and texts.
Then last month they had an offer on to upgrade to the 40gb tariff for use in USA etc for an extra £2.
So now it's £47.99 a month which is a really good deal.

Yes the phones expensive but arent all Apple products, but as Poster says its a better and cheaper option than tieing yourself up to 24 month phone contract providing your happy with a sim only deal running along side this - I'm ready to upgrade after running my 6 plus since launch day so currently coonsidering all available options for the best deal.
