The best option for many will be TPO 'The People's Network' 30 day rolling contract for just £2.99 a month, you get: 250 Mins, Unlimited Texts, 512MB Data.

Lots of light users do 500mb a month on their browsing, Facebook & emails. For them even 1p per mb PAYG works out more expensive. For 1gb data and 500 mins, it's only a pound extra. You do need a 3g/4g phone and pass a light credit check. Uses the Three network.

Looks like that has now stopped - no longer on the website, even if using a direct link to the £2.99 tariff from a price comparison site.

So I've gone for 1pMobile to replace my Talkmobile PAYG. Will mainly use it for calls - so effectively have 1000 minutes to use over a four month period for £10 and no credit check or risk of the company trashing your credit rating like you get with a contract.

Hope it goes well - their site is basic but functional I find. Are you going for the auto top-up option?

Haven't decided yet. If not I'll put a reminder on my Google calendar. Apparently they send you several email reminders if you don't top up.

p.s. this company are charging 15p/min to call Australia, Lebara charge 3p/min

On the flip side this 1/pmin tariff is unbeatable if you want to try and abuse the EU free roaming that recently came in, and although I do use my mobile mostly in the EU I went with the Three mobile 3p/min rate as I bet this 1p company will cut you off if you overuse your Sim in the EU and don't spend in the UK
jnm21 to Lexeus
29 Sep 17 #52
Still missing the point - the surplus credit is of little value - £3 for a 20 minute emergency call to Australia would be covered by the surplus in the first £10 top up.

As for your analysis, not sure how complete or otherwise it was, but to recommend a 12p/min & 19p/min tariff to light users... eh... I won't be relying on your advice any time soon! I know folk where £10 can last a year or more, so the 30 day free landlines is of limited use (and who these days wants to ask friends what network are they on). If you doubt my knowledge, mum is on Lyca for 1p/min calls to Australia & uses it regularly for that (significantly more than for 10p/min calls to UK) as cheaper than landline by far (mum could not use indirect methods & is happy to pay under £1 to have a *long* call to her brother). My example was a contrived one to point out that this is not £2.50 per month, more like £60 over 2 years with the option to use 940 minutes 1 month in 4 and average 20 minutes the other 3 (show me a contract that cheap)!

As for Lebara using Vodafone - watch for that changing - Voda have stated they want to invest in their network for their users only - lebara are I believe the last remaining Voda MVNO...
Lexeus to jnm21
30 Sep 17 #54
Well you spelled it out for yourself, £60 for two years.... in the last 2 years I have put £10 credit on my phone, do I need to explain which option is cheaper?

You do realise that the point of a forum like this is to help others? Not boast about what you have got or concentrate on your needs?

Anyhow, for anyone looking advice, at least I have pointed out the folly of a 19 & 12p/min tariff for light users & that this has a place; mainly for those with variable usage (one that I did not touch on is someone with very light phone, data & text usage, but with a fortnight a year when they use 400 min, 200 texts & 1GB - should all be covered for just £2.50 per month over the year). Looking at the deal temp, seems like others agree that this has a place - well done OP!

Well everything always comes down to the detail doesn't it. For a start, this sim card is certainly not the way you want to be making a call to australia....

I will give you a fair comparison, from what I ended up recommending for my mum... and my dad and my brother too... who all use their phone about 10mins a month too.

Firstly, at 3p/min, Three mobile on their 1-2-3 tariff is the best for casual light use, but you need a 3G phone and Three's coverage may not be good in every area.

I did an analysis of all current UK rates after which... It's Lebara mobile. Every time you top-up £5 they give you 30 days of free calls to landlines and other lebara mobile users. When you call other mobile networks you pay 19p/min and outside of a 30days free period you pay 12p/min to landlines. So for 10mins a month that works out as £1.90/month (max) minus the landline calls made in the free periods. Plus ontop of that Lebara mobile runs on the vodafone network which means they have the widest 2g signal coverage in the UK and europe.

So my point was, if you think that this 1p/min card is a good deal, you may as well take out a low cost contract; Despite it's advertising, this is NOT actually a cheap low usage PAYG sim card tariff. Anyone who takes it for that purpose will be paying more than they could have with another operator such as Lebara.

I found an alternative a little cheaper too, but not on the vodafone network and frankly my recommendation is that when looking for a Sim for a very light usage family member, why recommend anything but the Best coverage? After-all, they hardly use it so when they do make a call they will want it to work!

17 Sep 17 #44
I would not recommend using this company it's designed to immediately appeal to low usage customers but all the details tell you that it is going to cost you atleast as much as just taking out a £5/month rolling contract with any MVNO
jnm21 to Lexeus
19 Sep 17 #46
I am sure you believe what u say, but rubbish. For my mum, who uses her phone about 10 minutes a month this would cost her max £2.50 per month. Then in the month where she uses 300 minutes (perhaps some to Australia), that usage is covered by the surplus she had built up). Show me a £2.50 rolling contract with at least 300 minutes available in the 4th month & I'll bow to your wisdom.

This is the standard price for this tariff, so it's not a deal. Voted cold!

So where else do you get calls for 1p per minute? Another not for me = cold vote! Sad & selfish.

If your reasoning was sound, we would not have the 4 week reminder rule.

How can you lose your number of you don't top up? I thought you own your number
jomay to jumpinoffthbed
15 Sep 17 #43
No, you don't. Every mobile provider can disconnect your SIM and reclaim your number after too much "inactivity".
For many providers this is 6 months of no text, calls or data usage. Here it is 120 days without topup.
philmitchell
13 Sep 17 #3
So you must top up every 120 days with at least £10 .

TOP-UP REQUIREMENTIn order to remain a customer, you must top-up your 1pMobile phone/account at least once every 120 days (4 months) with effect from the Commencement Date. If you fail to do so, we will close your 1pMobile account, your mobile number will be disconnected, and any unused credit will be lost.

I set my Father up with a payg sim from Delight Mobile. It's on the same rates as 3's 1.2.3 payg sim (running on EE) but you only have to top up £5 every 3 months and it's a free sim. He hardly ever uses the sim, it's more so we can get in touch and so far it's fine. He can top up at the shops so it's doing the job.

I'll keep an eye on this thread and see if it might be worth switching over.

It's in Delight Mobile's T&Cs, 12Bii:

"The validity of each top up is 90 days. Post the 90 days validity period, the credit will expire and the customer will not be entitled to a refund of the expired credit."

Curious that that seems the inly place they mention, at least from my perusal of their site - not very encouraging behaviour.

Its not the only MVNO that does that (but thankfully its not a practice that the major networks have taken up), and a very good reason to think carefully before taking the plunge with one of the minnows (you'll see from the link that 1p Mobile themselves had a dodgy £5 a month thing earlier this year)
jomay to samspud
15 Sep 17 #42
Yes, it's decent. But they may kill your account and shred your number if you top up a day too late.
They shouldn't offer this as PAYG, but simply as a contract with auto top-up exactly every 120 days. The risk missing a top up with PAYG is far too great.

Or you top up every 100 days. But then we are talking 3£/month.

Any of the deals, I have seen, that are cheap payg or even contract are piggybacked off either EE or 3. Does anyone know of one or more that piggyback with a good offer using the O2 network? Cheapest I have seen so far is Tesco which is 8p per minute.

but has any one used freedompop? You pay a one off fee, and that is it. Ok, the app does crash every now and then. As your calls are made via the app over wifi/data. But for that price of 200mins 200 texts and 200 mb of data. Its pefect
wildecat to leeparsons
14 Sep 17 #35
Freedompop is rubbish - all free calls must be made via it's crash prone app and sound crap.
Texts sent sometimes don't arrive either.

Others have been stung as they auto-topup for lots of things too.
I registered with a card that I subsequently lost, so never had any issues in that regard.

You definitely get what you pay for with Freedompop!

I took this 3 Months ago, kept my original number, and still haven't used the initial £10!

Got about £0.70 left in the account, and that will last until the top up in a week anyway, so this has to be the best PAYG out there right now!

Plus it's 4G using the EE network so great coverage!

It's a no brainer

The calls/text price is good but for internet, not so much. Using 3GB a month would cost you £30 alone, or £12 with Giffgaff. Steer clear if you're a heavy internet user.

3 GB is £8 with Plusnet, TPO or ID mobile. Giffgaff stopped being competitive a long time ago.

Good deal, but I still value my 3 payg 321 sim as it doesn't have ANY time limit. It lasts until the money runs out.
I used to top up with £10 when I started and the longest I have gone with that is 7 months & a couple of 6 month spells with my very low usage. (mostly just texts). Now I just put a Fiver on it.
This 1pMobile deal is obviously better if you would use £10 credit within 4 months.
daz1969
13 Sep 17 #19
Been with them for 3 weeks, was on a contract for years and never using anywhere near my calls/text/data allowance, so giving these a try, ported my number, it was done in a day, I think they give you a 14 day trial so if you are not happy you can get a refund. mackem1966, you go online to your account that you set up when you registered, it gives your balance and tells you when you will need to top up again.
mackem1966
13 Sep 17 #17
Do they give you notice the 120 days is coming to an end ? In the end its our responsibilty but would be nice if they did

Just read on their website they remind you 2 weeks prior to the 120th day ....will give this a go when my 3 2 1 sim credit runs out thanks OP

13 Sep 17 #15
Some thoughts:

- you can set it to top up automatically, either when your credit drops below £2 or 120 days have elapsed (so you don't lose your number, though will obviously build up credit);

- there's a tedious £5 charge if you need a replacement sim;

- the sim is only 'free' if you pay £10 up front to get it... i.e. you can't order a sim for 'free' (as a spare, say).
