After reading some things in the news recently and decided that I should get a dash cam.
This one seems a fantastic price for the features.
From the Amazon Website "Stronger performance While most dash cams in the market are based on Novatek chips, the Vantrue R2 is built on high end Ambarella A7 processor, features higher stability on seamless recording. The OV4689 Color CMOS image sensor captures video in 1296P resolution.
Clearer Video * The 1080P FHD might not meet your need, now you have the 2304*1296P, 2560*1080P WHD and 1960*1080P +HDR options, still at 30 fps. * WDRrecords greater scene details, from shadows to highlights than normal, and presents images familiar with the scene in your eyes. * The dust and heat proof F2.0 6-Layer Optical Glass Lens captures high quality images in bad driving environment. * 170 Deg. wide viewing angle captures grandeur scenario. * Superior night vision grabs outstanding video at night.
Safety First * The G-Sensor auto locks videos with impact detected. Support manually locking videos with emergency button. * Seamless loop recording enables it to overwrite the oldest footage with the newest upon filling a card to capacity. * One press to switch the camera to Parking Mode, triggered by the motion detection sensor, the camera will auto record when people or things come closer to your car.
Easy to use * 2.7-in display allows for playback of videos and pictures, and exclusively new operation interface makes the setup easier. * Auto power on and record while car engine started. * Simply stamp Date, Time and License ID on the footage. * Quick snapshot in 16M pixels with the Snapshot button. * Simply connect andplayback the video on HDTV or PC." 1296P Ambarella A7 processor+OV4689 Color CMOS image sensor

Anything over 1080p is overkill for a dash cam, I'd even say anything over 720p is overkill. Had my g1w for a while and the picture is clear as day.
Price isn't too bad but I wouldn't get sucked in to buying a 2k/4k camera.

Not true usually when you get a 2k or 4k camera you also get 1080p @ 60 frames per second which is what you need to be able to make out number plates clearly.

I think for the price, it's a bargain. Whilst I tend to agree about the quality, I also think the higher quality the better, especially as it may well be viewed by solicitors, insurance companies, police etc.
Also, I am going to see if I can mount it my bike. I see some stunning scenery when I go out. SO would love to have that captured at a good resolution.

Ref the 2k is a waste I use to have a decent Transcend dash cam that was HD (1080), but changed it for a more discreet 2K dash cam just so I could leave it in the car and you can really notice the difference.
I must admit I am not one of the people that raves on about 4K on TV's, but with dash cam recordings you want them as sharp as possible as you want to be able to make out the numberplate clearly even at a distance.

1080p is 2K. 4K is approx 4000 horizontal pixels and 2K/1080p is approx 2000 horizontal.

Doesn’t mean 2K is 1080p. 1080p isn’t 2K. They’re different definitions.

1920x1080 is the consumer crop of cinema DCI 2K (2048×1080). 3840×2160 UHD is the consumer crop of cinema DCI 4K (4096 x 2160). 2560x1440 is not any "K" as it is not a crop of a cinema format.

For the price this is amazing, especially when you take into account the quality and wide viewing angle.

Remember to factor in the cost of a Sandisk High Endurance / Kingston Industrial or similer Micro SD Card. Normal micro cards are not suitable for continuous loop recording and fail, the last thing you need if its at the event of an accident! The combined package shown lower down in the Amazon listing shows the Sandisk Ultra micro SD card the worse culprit withfailing in Car cams!
