Most powerful automation app for Android had just been reduced from £2.99 to just 89p, well worth it in my option.
Just recently got a UI overhaul and rarely on sale.
Total Automation, From Settings to SMS.
* Triggers: App, Time, Day, Location, Hard/Soft State, Event, Shortcut, Widget, Timer, Plugins * Actions: 200+ built-in, plugin support * Tasks: loops, variables, conditions * Scenes: design your own screen overlays * App Creation: create your own standalone apps to share or sell! (Android 2.3+)
And so many more, possibilities are endless!

Stupid question, does this require root at all?

The FAQ addresses this question. The answer is not a simple one

Does not need root, however root will allow you to do more things. For my requirements I don't need root and been using for a number of years. Great app

Fantastic app! I paid a few quid for it and thought it was worth it, let alone 89p!

Is it still worth buying this now that we have IFTTT?
PeteW to refaey

Yes, they do very different things. IFTTT connects up events and actions from various online services, Tasker connects states/events and actions on your phone.
A few examples of things I've got mine set up to do: * If I have headphones on or am in the car, text messages will be read out * Loudly reminds me to get off the train (over my headphones) as I approach my stop - having slept through it before! * If I've not remembered to plug my phone in to charge overnight it shuts down all non-essential services * Silences my phone when I'm at work
Very powerful app but needs a bit of tech sense to get the most out of it.

Thanks for the information - but IFTTT connects states/events and actions on your phone too. In fact, as a commuter, I currently use it for almost all the examples you listed :-)

Hmm. Do I need Tasker? Nope. Will I buy it....what's google rewards credit for if you don't use it?! I had a hacked version years ago but never put the effort in to work out how to get the most out of it.

Ditto  . Just got this and the office pro for 10p. Very unlikely to use them but it's always good to have apps in the library for future use.

I was looking at that too! But I think google docs will do all I need on mobile - I need to stop adding apps to my phone! I just put a custom ROM on my Sammy Note 4 and want to try to get the most out of the battery life - at least I can hibernate these new apps with greenify...

Any idea how much is this increasing battery usage? Assuming it is yet another app running constantly in the background

I've not used it for a bit (I'm using Automate at the moment as I'd read that the Tasker developer was going to slow down his updates or stop them altogether) but it never used much battery at all. It's a great app, but you can go very in depth with it so it can be complex.

I uninstalled it in the end and switched to the easier #1 Profile. But it is a deal at 89p.

To be honest, I've had it in my watch list for years and it's never been on offer (as far as I know) so I'm gonna buy it for 89p.
I've been using AutomateIt and IFTTT and they're both very useful. I'm sure I'll find a use for Tasker too. If not, only 89p lost; no big drama :-)
Thanks for sharing - heat added.

I'll just share some examples of how I use tasker everyday:
Simple location profiles (Mute phone at work, low volume at home and max while out) Disabling and enabling auto-rotate when I need it based on location Bluetooth music profile to increase media volume to 80% and play music after connecting to my car. Mutes media volume on disconnection to avoid "awkward" moments  Store current ringer volume and mute when opening the camera app to disable the camera shutter sound. Restores volume on exit Widgets on homescreen to tell my Home PC to play/pause music, next and previous tracks Function to use my watch to do the above task (Automatically activates when playing music on my PC) Work van bluetooth workaround - Disconnects and reconnects when the van messes up the connection. Seamlessly works 20+ times a day (This is a lifesaver for me!) Sync my tablets current battery level to a widget on my phones screen Widget on my tablets home screen to enable wifi tethering on my phone and auto-connect. Another tap to disable wifi tethering on my phone Widget on my tablets screen to show signal strength / data availability (4g, 3g, etc.) of my phone Disables certain physical buttons when a bluetooth controller is connected to avoid the "B" button registering a "Back" command on some poorly made apps / games
Tasker has a steep learning curve but can save you so much time / make your life easier. True that some of these functions are built into some android phones (Quiet hours, location based volume profiles) but tasker syncs seamlessly when you upgrade / change phone.

Is there any good sources of info to show what it can do and how to do it?
If so, any links?

Anyone considering this might want to check out MacroDroid first - 'same same but different' - I've been using it for a few weeks now and can't recommend it highly enough.

I own Tasker and used it a fair bit but it's a bit tough going - I believe it now has a nicer UI. Marodroid is brilliant - much easier to use and with a similar feature set (although I believe Tasker can do more). Macrodroid incorporates what Llama used to be able to do (cell towers) very well also.

Another great use is to display icons on your Android wear watchface when you have unread messages, missed calls, voice mails etc.

Used to love Tasker, but changing to Automate up'ed what I can do even more with it's simple visuals!
Still heat for Tasker @10p!

a lot of automation which are useful in your daily life can be done by the great (tiny) free app called Llama.

In almost all cases Tasker is overkill. It is really intended for dev types, to make the most of it you should be building apps and using advanced features which require rooted device. For most tasks, including ones listed in this thread, Automate and similar alternatives will do just fine.
This is a good price, so heat, but it'll be a bit like people ordering raspberry pis and then asking what they do realizing it's not worth the effort.
