This is vastly improved over the original broadcast version, a stunning restoration, a must at this price if you have an even passing interest

It's just a crying shame that they didn't film with wide-screen in mind. It would have looked even more amazing. As you'll see if you look into it, they filmed on film in wide-screen but framed it for 4:3 consequently lighting rigs and so on are in the wide shot. Also the CGI was only rendered for 4:3 framing.

Times change - widescreen TVs were a rarity when these originally aired. Not that I disagree that widescreen from the outset would have been great, of course!

Would have bought if it was 16:9, I think it was the biggest blunder ever to not release this in wide-screen because it was FILMED in wide-screen! Yes they would need to work at digitally airbrushing out set equipment and maybe adding some CGI to fill gaps but it would have been a much better job.
The boxset sold terribly at full retail price which is why they gave up on a DS9 and VOY restoration.

I would love to know where you got your info from. It was not "filmed" in widescreen at all. Everything was framed in 4:3.

There is enough on the sides to make it 16:9, and yes I expect them to digitally sort out (through airbrushing or CGI) everything in the picture.
If this had been Star Wars you know they would have thrown money at sorting it (Lucas loves to fiddle!) but Paramount doesn't have a love of the franchise like Lucasfilm.

Messing about with three 2 hour long movies is a totally different financial prospect to 178 forty five minute episodes!
George Lucas like to fiddle even when it made no logical sense, he had the rights and money to do whatever he liked. Once he sold the rights to Disney they cancelled the 3D conversions of the second and third prequel films as they were making decisions from a purely business point of view.
The restoration of TNG was at best barely profitable as it was, if it had been a runaway success they would have done Deep Space Nine next but it wasn't so we'll probably never see that in HD.
You can't expect a company to do something just because you think they should if it makes no financial sense for them to do so. Maybe it could work for a single two parter like The Best of Both Worlds that you could release separately but not for an entire series of 178 episodes!

Yes releasing it in 4:3 was the only sensible option. Although technically "filmed" in widescreen it was only framed in 4:3, removing all the side elements would have been prohibitively time consuming and costly. It already cost them a lot of money, as much as it would cost to make a show from scratch because of all the work involved. The restoration doesn't seem to have been profitable at least in the short term, they'd have lost a massive amount of money doing what you suggested. Thankfully they didn't the crop the image to make it widescreen like other releases have done.
Widescreen would have been nice but the 4:3 release we have was the best practical option available.

Netflix have this version too.
I'm a big TNG fan so I have the Blu-ray but just a heads up for anyone wanting to save money.

If I didn't constantly binge watch this on Netflix, I would buy it in a heart beat. The hd quality of Netflix is pretty good but I imagine the Blu-ray would look superb.

This was such a fantastic series back in the day, and having rewatched it on Syfy recently, is still as good thirty years on. I watched it in my teens, and realising how old it is makes me feel very "mature". it has aged very well.
Ive recommended this series to several people who inexplicably hate science fiction, and they all loved it.
