I'm not sure that you need more than 3,000 books. I read about one hour every weekday for my commute and tend to get through 50-70 books in a year (depending on length). So if I loaded this up with 3,000 books, I could read 70 books a year for 42 years and 9 months before needed to get some more.

4GB is still a lot of books! I have never used an SD card on any of my eReaders and have always been fine.

Kobo are great readers, especially if you use POCKET (Read It Later) for reading web articles, I have the Glo HD and the Aura One.

Having tried both, I much prefer Kobo to Kindles. The Aura Edition 2 doesn't have as high a resolution as some of the others, but I just don't think it's worth going over £100 for an eReader.

I wouldn't get too hung-up on the resolution unless you have super accurate eyesight or need/want to read tiny text, I can only notice any difference from the original Kobo Glo (265 dpi) to the Glo HD (300 dpi) if I use a magnifying glass, even then it's barely noticeable. A lower DPI should lead to slightly faster processing although I no longer have the Glo to be able to confirm this.

There's lots of other brands, Energy sistem currently has refurbs on their site at half price. I've got two models and both have been fine. Then there's Icarus, Boox, Boyue, Tolino, Inkbook all of which offer android based with buttons and micro sd slot. Icarus has a refurb section on its site too. Being android it means you can add books how you want so the folder structure is the same and you don't end up with books all jumbled as I did with my old kobo.

Yes it's possible and not difficult, but you need a little tech knowledge and it's probably verboten to explain the exact method here.
On another and (naturally) completely unrelated note, Calibre is an excellent program for managing ebook collections in various formats, at least once you've got to grips with the admittedly unintuitive and messy interface.
