Went into PC World today and they had the Surface Pro 4 i5 4GB ram and 128GB hard drive marked as £429. They are selling off the displays. I bought one, they then say it will take a couple of days as they re-format and get rid of the demo and PC World stuff. They had 3 at Highgate Birmingham, 5 in Worcester, 4 in Kidderminster, 1 in Solihull, so there seems to be plenty around. There is 1 in Selly Oak, the person I spoke with there said it was a demo only, but it isn't, it just needs to be set up. The keypad is not reduced or included. The pen is included, and it will come boxed. In Highgate they had them at full price, but confirmed it was not correct and lowered it to £429. Nationwide INSTORE ONLY Not listed online.
I contacted Microsoft otday via chat and can confirm that they ask for proof of purchase via email and then will restart the warranty.

Are these Surface Pros any better than the older models? I used to use one at work and it frustrated me endlessly, not fit for purpose and I couldn't understand the price.

It was awkward to use as a laptop because the keyboard and trackpad felt really cheap. It was awkward to use as a tablet because Windows doesn't work great on tablets. It couldn't make its mind up whether it wanted to be in tablet or desktop mode. Considering how much it cost I was expecting it to at least be powerful but it often lagged on basic processes. I ended up ditching it after a couple of months and reverting to the tatty old Toshiba laptop I had used before we got the Surface Pros because at least I was comfortable with it. We've since upgraded to some proper Dell laptops so don't have any issues any more.

Had mine i5 4GB since March and I've been impressed. I did buy a Brydge keyboard for it, but to be honest, it works just as well with the type cover. I use mine for 1080P video editing and it doesn't lag. Only issue I've had is the wife doesn't like how loud the keyboard is when typing

I bought an ex-display Surface Pro 3 - for £400 from Currys, Boxing-day 2015.
I use it for work and at home, so very heavy usage.
I just checked the battery stats from recent charges. Until two weeks ago I was always getting 99-100% of the designed full charge. However this last fortnight there's been a 8% drop in maximum charge, which has sustained. Not sure why or if it's temporary.

True, I went to a store with several, compared them and went for one that was on the side without the keyboard and looked in good condition. To be fair, I could not see anything wrong with the others either, and it is still under warranty.

Good upgrade. Don't worry about the type cover price either, I just posted a deal regarding how to get a cheap original type cover. Besides, you get a year long guarantee from Microsoft. I used a cheap charger and it fried my surface pro 4. Microsoft just replaced it for me. Was really pumped about that.

Few notes some may find useful as I bought a SP3 ex demo last year; -Yes they are allowed to sell it to you, 1 store tried telling me they weren't. -it's really easy to remove the demo mode yourself, you don't have to wait for them to do it. -when you come to register the product on your ms account it may say it's only got a months warranty or something, simply livechat ms support and they'll just ask for a copy of your proof of purchase and renew your warranty online.

Great devices when they work, but they do seem to suffer from a relatively high failure rate, which might explain why Currys have so many "ex-display" models to sell.
The manager said that the displays are from Microsoft (obviously) and sent to be used as displays, so all are i5 4GB ram etc, so not customer returns. You can alsways buy the insurance from PC World if worried, they do it for £8/pm.

I bought the m version of this about a month ago and hatred it. If went back took the shop within a couple of days.
Very laggy, and quite a lot of screen touches didn't register. It felt very underpowered as a laptop and not nearly snappy enough to be a tablet.
There i5 version is probably better though.

A 3 year old heavily used device still had 99-100% of its design capacity? For that to be true Microsoft would have to be using some pretty special battery tech. Even if it wasn't used at all for 3 years it's highly unlikely it would be 99-100%. Even 8% is pretty decent.

I wish I hadnt seen this but I had too - needed a Pro 4 and found one in Tamworth, there is still one left there @£429, got them to give me £30 discount off 3 years insurance as a child will be using it. This includes Worldwide Cover and a replacement if necessary, within 7 days. Daughter is just setting it up so if an 11 year old can do it I had no intention of paying Currys £35 for that! Keyboard was around £115 (cant quite remember) so looking for one of these now - any help with that please?
1 left in Solihull around 4pm, 1 in Coventry and a few singles in stores around Birmingham. No point ringing the main number as they havent a clue, best to go in store to any branch and get them to do a stock check - which I did, the one in my store was damaged so they checked local stores. Worked at currys, would never buy x display stock as it's been running from open to store close 7 days a week for 6-9 months. Several hundred people a week touching and poking at it, not worth the hassle. Even when I worked there most staff would try avoid doing to ex display sales as 90% of the time you'd end up with an angry customer when problems became evident.

I bought a SP4 when it came out and I really wanted to like it, but the battery drained over time and it wouldn't go into "sleep" so always needed to be powered up when opened. Other than those two deal breakers, it is a total beauty of a machine. I ended up getting an xps 13 infinity display and since, I have heard the two issues I listed above have been completely fixed so if that is the case, that makes this an amazing deal (if its on ok condition and the battery isn't on the brink of dying - based on other comments, could be true...).

There's loads of issues with Consumer Reports. Firstly, they don't ask or confirm that the people filling out the surveys actually own the tablet in question. They don't say of the 90,000 surveyed how many used a Surface tablet. They don't ask or specify how long someone had the tablet for. They don't even report the severity or frequency of the issues quoted. Last year they went after Apple over battery concerns and were criticized for the same reasons that time as well.
Consumer Reports is also struggling getting younger members to subscribe to it so they are getting in the habit of tabloid-esque headlines without actually providing the facts to back it up.

Here’s how you can find out how many life cycles you have consumed so far:
Press + RType ‘CMD‘ then Type ‘powercfg /batteryreport‘ within the Command Prompt window then .This will create a file called ‘battery-report.html’ at some location that you need to note down in the Command Prompt.Use the file explorer to navigate through to the report file. When you open it, you will see the report with lots of information on the battery usage. You will also find the number of life cycles you have consumed on your Surface (see – ‘CYCLE COUNT’ field).

Cheers for the heads-up
-Yes they are allowed to sell it to you, 1 store tried telling me they weren't.
-it's really easy to remove the demo mode yourself, you don't have to wait for them to do it.
-when you come to register the product on your ms account it may say it's only got a months warranty or something, simply livechat ms support and they'll just ask for a copy of your proof of purchase and renew your warranty online.
"Refurbished" customer returns?
Microsoft Surface devices fail on reliability: Consumer Reports
You can alsways buy the insurance from PC World if worried, they do it for £8/pm.
Just rang up the national hotline and the advisor checked and said theres only one in the country and its at full price... and also that "they shouldnt be selling ex-demos"
I found when I got the Surface Pro 3 ex display stock last year it was easier to walk in, get them to do a stock check on the number and then you know where it's in stock.
Anyone?
Cheers
I'm thinking knackered displays, buttons et al, from the grubby customer's fingers.
I'd avoid this "deal" like the plague.
When I asked staff they didnt have a clue. The guy then asked he could help further if there was a stock code which I gave thanks to a previous poster and was told "there must be an error as that is display stock and we don't sell that, it goes back to Microsoft"
1 left in Solihull around 4pm, 1 in Coventry and a few singles in stores around Birmingham.
No point ringing the main number as they havent a clue, best to go in store to any branch and get them to do a stock check - which I did, the one in my store was damaged so they checked local stores. Rang up and got it reserved till I got there.
Checked and all is well, at this price its a no-brainer! One year warranty, backed by Micro$oft.

Cex also have the type covers for £58 I think. People have said they got what looked like new boxed ones, but ymmv. I saw those on deals here quite some time ago.
Hopefully there's some left in Brum tomorrow.
i have purchased this surface yesterday from nottingham.
when i tried to register it with Microsoft they it is showing it is expired already. when i contacted Microsoft services they told there is no way to extend the manufacturer warranty. see attached image.
if you are happy with currys pc world national uk warrenty. go ahead. if you want international warranty. Stop.
hope it helps.
Consumer Reports is also struggling getting younger members to subscribe to it so they are getting in the habit of tabloid-esque headlines without actually providing the facts to back it up.
Well 5 now lol
alterantively would chuck you 20 quid if you pick up another lol!
Cheers
Now looking for a type cover. Tempted to go for an original but foreign AZERTY one (pro3 version), as dead cheap on ebay, and modify it. Got a small bluetooth keyboard to use in the meanwhile though.
Would be useful to know if anyone else came across same issue.
theres 1 left at wakefield still as of closing tonight
but it has no pen and they will not discount at all - make sure it has the charger as they said they had mine then "lost it" then found it again just before closing
They forced me to wait for them to "set it up" which was super annoying...when i went in at closing they just started it so I demanded it as they were just messing me around
tips demand to take it there and then and do the "set up" yourself
Not from Currys, get off Ebay got Kaspersky @£10 and keys for MS Office can be purchased very cheap. Been running mine for 4 months now no problems. Set the software to download and leave the PC for a few hours when you come back its finished.
However after calling Currys/PC World they have stated that the warranty will be honoured by them for a full year from date of purchase and that includes batteries.........How good their cover is I have no idea ?
Question now is do I return it or take a chance on Currys/PC world warranty ?
"How are you doing today? As promised I`m sending you the e-mail due to the fact that I have an update in regards this case of yours. I have escalated the case and it seems that my colleagues won`t be able to update the warranty details, due to the fact that your device is a DEMO device, meaning that those devices are sold to the retailers and usually yyou should not get one of those. The only available solution will be to go back to the place of purchase so they can change the device and provide you with another device, not a DEMO one. I hope you will understand. Thank you for your time!"
