This or a seagate expansion 4gb desktop external Drive for about same money? I don't need portable, so are their reliability benefits to either.

Not if you're not going to carry it around. Laptop drives are designed to be carried around as they are (surprise!) designed to be carried around. Some desktop drives I have had have failed power supplies.

Tempted...but I noticed this is a good chunk heavier than it's competition...why is it 379g when others are all 230-246g?!

Suspect the listing is incorrect and that's the boxed weight, this review suggests it weighs 241g

I've got the Maxtor, Seagate and WD 4TB drives for a bit of diversity (less likely to have them all fail with the same issue, I guess). They are all pretty much the same!

Anybody got a good case for this? I'm assuming standard portable hard drive cases won't fit this in.
Out of interest, do any of these 4TB disks offer the potential to be ripped open and used normally elsewhere? Considering 2.5" storage disks for a small build in future and these are a cheap way of getting the storage.
