Finally all up and running and...very happy.

Very nice interface, TV comes on and fully operational within a couple of seconds and Amazon Prime/Netflix also initiate with a similar timescale...my Sony (only 3 yrs old) took an age in comparison.

Picture is great, especially when HDR is active (The Tick on Prime is a good tester).

Couple of questions:

- on the home menu, with the ribbon along the bottom, is there any way of reordering this or removing options? - e.g. I don't have Now TV so would be good if I good get rid of it, and move the AV inputs higher up.

- How do you turn the Trumotion off?? I've not had any judder issues, but would like to know in case (I've only seen the superficial picture modes...any recommendations? - cinema is perfect for movies, otherwise Eco seems the best for general viewing. I've seen there's a 'HDR Effect' but not sure precisely how that affects the picure

...oh, and the sound I awesome for a flatscreen..far better than my old Sony

Turned TruMotion off all together, seems to be a lot better, but it is a shame as this option badly needed to improve sports viewing experience. Does anybody know if the issue persists in any LG TV or the judder is worse only for 100Hz TVs as this one?

I think those de-judder and de-blur options are just for OLED range TVs. As far as i remember there was only one setting in "User" mode. I will double check when i get back home.

Let us know if somebody found perfect settings as i am close to returning it.

I read the following on the net which may be useful (got mine today but still to unpack):

This is a common complaint of LG's TruMotion picture processing engine. One simple way to reduce motion artefacts is to turn off TruMotion all together, but this has a negative effect on subjective clarity.

The Smooth and Clear settings restore detail, but introduce motion artefacts around moving objects – horizontal pans are smooth with good detail retention.

The Clear Plus mode delivers excellent moving detail at 6.5 ppf (pixels per frame), but there's a noticeable drop in brightness. There are motion artefacts, but perhaps they're not as noticeable as those found on the regular Clear setting. This could be a good choice for sports fans.

Strangely though not a single TruMotion mode warrants genuine enthusiasm.

Ultimately, I found the best option was to use the customisable User mode (something most buyers simply won't bother with). This has variable de-judder and de-blur, and provides the cleanest images.

Set de-judder at between 5-7, and de-blur at 0. Motion artefacts are reduced to almost zero and there's a little motion blur during pans, which combats that rather cheap-looking soap opera effect.

The result is pleasingly cinematic.

I have this back and forth every time I see a tv deal, unless it's an ultra expensive model...

I've seen this was over £900 everywhere, including John Lewis (who don't sell dross) and held it's price at this for the past 6 months or so - only dropped by Amazon in the last week. There's always one negative customer review, but on the whole they're overwhelmingly positive.

It's apparently one of the top of the range models before you venture into OLED, LG have one of the best interfaces, and I couldn't find anything at this price unless it's by an up and coming make like Hisense (which, despite good pic quality, has a dreadful interface).

If someone can send me a damning comprehensive review or link then I'll rethink it, otherwise I can't see why this isn';t a great deal (or 'was'...)

Much better options out there. Beware - the panels LG are using in their mid to upper range sets are generally inferior both in brightness, colour and black levels than last years. And that isn't even considering the fact these aren't 4k. I've not seen a single sub £1000 LG set reviewed well (by a site which knows their stuff) and certainly not one superior to my budget £650 55uh850v.

Stick with their OLED lines (and even then I'd rather have the c6 rather than the c7 as I live 3d on these 4k sets) and you're fine. Otherwise you need to look at the 9500 and poss 8500 lines. Otherwise check out hisense if on a budget, they're 4k for a start.

Can you give some more info.
What makes it bad?
I ask this because I am used to plasma TV (which I have owned for over 5 yrs) and to me, the only thing which matters is image quality/motion. I've noticed that LCD tvs tend to have poor image quality and poor motion.

My next TV will need to be better than my existing plasma telly (such a shame that Panasonic ceased production of their plasmas, otherwise that would be the logical choice), which means that I have to be careful when buying a new TV.

Most people on here don't own a plasma, so probably won't know what they are missing when they buy a low quality LCD TV. So, if they bought a poor quality TV, they would probably be impressed.

I'd like to hear more from people who are used to viewing good quality TVs and how this set would compare.

The sd picture is ok! As for the other things you mentioned I've not noticed any motion judder or clouding banding I've noticed if the back ground is black there is a slight lighter band in the middle of the picture but not enough to put me off. I play my Xbox one s and my PS4 on it I got the new uncharted game it supports HDR and the graphics are stunning same with GRW and for a horizon 3 on the Xbox one and it has Dolby vision to.

I couldn't face spending that much on a TV when history shows that the price falls on TVs so quickly. I still think of the first 42" LCD flat screen setup I saw in House of Fraser, it was £15k!! Knowing my luck, I'd buy the £3000 set and 6mth later it would drop to £1000. First world problems ehhh?

26 Aug 17 #45
I think you've misread my post there. My recommendations were to buy a £700 TV and keep it for 7+ years if you just want good picture quality, but if you want to be an early adopter and see new technologies first then £1250-1500 is a better budget for that.

Although the comparison you make isn't particularly valid. 1080p TVs for the last couple of years have been purely budget models, with quality below that of previous years. Even the 2017 models are still using outdated chipsets without the latest copy protection that 4K TVs have had for several years (and is required for the highest bitrate steams on Netflix etc.)

Plus brexit et al. has been hammering the economy, so £700 in 2010 for a foreign product is more like £900 now.
mannin
26 Aug 17 #44
I have had an LG 42 about 7 years now and that cost 700 back then, to be honest it beats any 1080p TV now, so spending 1250-1500 is not needed at all. Not one of my LG TV has died yet any the oldest is about 10 years. The only TV,s that are likely to die in two are the the cheaper brands.

Whats the width of the feet/stand on this tv please thanks
EndlessWaves
26 Aug 17 #42
Neither are the most sensible routes.

Going for a high end TV and keeping it ten years is probably a better choice than a £700 TV every two. Picture quality typically doesn't advance that fast so TVs keep well.

I would say the sensible route is to pick out a mid-range TV you really like and keep it until it dies, or if you want to keep up with the Joneses then go for a step down or two from the top where you save a lot of money without losing too much performance.

Judging from last year's clearance prices the best bet right now for trend following on a £3.3k per decade budget is around £1250-1500 on an XE93 or entry level OLED in early 2018 that you keep for ~4 years.

Save yourself the hassle and pay an extra £200 for this model (SONY BRAVIA KD55XE8396) from currys - currys.co.uk/gbu…tml
Really good tv, went into currys to have a look and i was really impressed by the level of detail, blacks are great but obviously not oled perfect but really great for ips model, no banding or motion blur aswell espically when watching football, xbox one s looks spot on and even the original ps4 looks great in 1080p, hdr is 10bit frc so it mimicks a 10bit panel/colour for hdr content and it does looks really good job that you wont even notice unless your looking to notice something, but obviously not a true 10bit but to be honest unless you going to pay £1500-2000 for a true 10bit hdr experience that sony model is the best in its price range, and also that model is a currys exclusive and you get 5 year guarantee with the sony model unlike the lg which gives you 1 year with amazon...

Not slating anyone here and I know very little about tv's but every time I look on a tv thread their are always people saying it is best to wait for this tech to come down in price or that.
Is it not normally the reason why tv's have 'significant' reductions is because it has been replaced by something better.
so working on that theory you are never going to get the best tv's on the market at a bargain price unless it is a mis-price.
So you either go out and pay top dollar for the latest tech. Or buy something like this with a big saving of what it was originally worth and then live with the fact that you haven't got the best tv in the world, but still a very good one.
Feel free to shoot me down in flames as I am no expert.
EndlessWaves to whaleshark
26 Aug 17 #33
Not really.

The TV world operates on a yearly model schedule. TVs are launched at a high price, reduced over the year and then the cycle starts again with a fresh batch of models a year later.

The best TV on the market right now is either the Sony ZD9 or LG B7 depending on requirements. The smallest 65" ZD9 launched at £4000 and currently goes for around £3300 while the smallest 55" B7 launched at £3000 and currently goes for around £2000.

Neither have been surpassed by anything and short of a surprise announcement for a ZD9 replacement at IFA next week neither are going to be surpassed until March 2018. Going by the pattern of previous years both will decrease in price further before then.

So yes, from a value for money perspective there's definitely a right time of year to buy even a cutting edge TV.

This typically means that below the top of the range older TVs are better as a single year's advancement is far smaller than the price premium on new models. The previous years models are usually sold out before the new ones match them in value.
whaleshark to EndlessWaves
26 Aug 17 #39
many thanks for that info.

i suppose it also depends on how much disposable cash you have. For example would you be better off paying £3300 for a ZD9 and for myself not having the money to update the set for several years. Or buy something like this deal and then being able to upgrade in maybe 2-3 years??
it is food for thought...
ca8msm to whaleshark
26 Aug 17 #35
There's always something bigger and better coming along but it's about trying to find the best quality you can get for your budget. As TV's come along on a yearly cycle it's often best waiting for a sale or for a new model to come out to grab the one you have been looking at for a cheaper price. Most people keep their TV's for a few years so if it means waiting x months to get a better panel and deal then I think it's worth it. For example earlier this year, if you could actually find them in stock, a lot of 2016 models were being sold off due to the 2017 ones coming out, but it meant you could get one from higher up the range that would be better specs than the 2017 one that you could buy for the same budget.

Anybody please share your experience with LG RGBW TV?. Does it really matters??
ca8msm to Ajeeth
26 Aug 17 #7
It depends whether you want true 4k or not. The RGBW panel means it's not, as a quarter of the sub pixels are white rather than RGB. Put the TV next to an LG that isn't (I think it's big brother the 55SJ850V isn't an RGBW panel) then you'll notice the difference in motion. However, on it's own in your front room I still think you'd be happy with the picture it gives. Personally, I'd wait for a few months for the non RGBW models (or ideally an OLED but that will be a longer wait) to come down in price and go for one of those.

Damn, that was NOT the answer I wanted to hear!!!! :kissing_heart: I kind of guessed that was the best way forward for me, but when OLED comes down there's going to be something else that makes that look crap...... and I've got the new TV bug now!!! :sunglasses:

Haha sorry! Maybe go and see the TV in the flesh and see what you think? The picture is still very good it's just that the specs mean it doesn't have the required number of RGB sub-pixels that a 4k UHD TV should have.

Go down to your local AV shop and pick the one that you feel offers the best picture for the money. Job done. The internet is a lousy way to make the final decision on purchases like a mid-range TV. Familiarise yourself with the market online, but picture quality in TVs at this price comes down to the best balance of compromises and not how advanced the technology is.

That depends on why they're buying a 4K TV, what they want from it and which trade-offs in picture quality bother them.

It's like cars. There's no single best car model out there. They're all good and there are some models that will be the best choice for more people than other models, but no single model you can point to and say 'this one suits all buyers'.

I'd expect this TV to suit people who want a rounded television with reasonable interface and sound that's mostly used in a well lit room. It's not a TV for home theatre setups due to it's relatively low contrast and it's not a TV for those who want to be early adopters of HDR due to it's slow and coarse local dimming system. The former group have alternatives at this price, the latter group should be spending more, waiting or reassessing what they want.

I have the sj850v and use it in a conservatory in a bright room it's very good, the webos is brilliant no lag and everything seem to just work unlike older smart TV the magic remote is excellent with voice commands. But in a dark room the blacks are not so black but only noticeable when the whole screen is black or you have bars at the top and bottom. I have to give it 10/10 for features, and 7.5 for picture but that's only because of the low light picture, in a bright room 8.5 hope this helps. Oh and for the rgbw thing, unless you are going to be watching the pixels under a microscope I think you will be fine.
