Just buy some keyboard stickers from Amazon or Ebay - they're only £2 or so and work perfectly. For example:

amazon.co.uk/Eng…MS/

ebay.co.uk/sch…ers

You only need stickers for £/$ signs, the # key and maybe a couple of others.

This looks like a 4-5 year old laptop with a lower spec CPU. I can't see the amazing value in the price to be honest.

Check out the Asus S400CB from 4 years ago to see what I mean (it's a better laptop as well than this) >

expertreviews.co.uk/lap…iew

As soon as I saw this Ezbook I thought this looks like a clone of an S400 or similar machine which in turn is a clone of a Macbook Air.

Just not feeling this deal at all, appreciate the post but nah.

I disagree with completely. This laptop is light and portable and USP is its FHD screen. It has a quite decent battery life click (fast forward to 8mins 23s) of 7hr 30mins+. You can also dual boot Linux mint as well (optional). I think if your're a student this is quite good for less than £200.

Also fanless, AC wireless .M2 SSD slot, full metal build, 2xUSB3

The features and build quality this price bracket from chinese ODMs has made huge strides recently.

Intel Apollo Lake was only released late last year. It's a much more modern CPU and chipset.

That Asus you linked to was £700. Obviously a better CPU but with a worse screen and heavier at 1.8kg. This is lighter, thinner, with a better screen and only £191!

'If you pay three times more you get three times more' or that's what conventional wisdom says, but in this case you pay three times more and get three times LESS! This laptop has a FHD screen, is featherlight and has a battery which lasts 7h plus. Yours cannot hold a candle to this.

If the package is from outside the UK (not from their UK warehouse) and Gearbest don't insure you against extra charges then it's likely you will pay them.

It's not hard to find information just search on Google, for example >

im getting old so forgive me

why do folks buy mid range to expensive laptops if not playing games or doing intensive processor work if these cheap notebooks are all that's needed for most peoples general internet use

e.g. i'm sitting here using a 2nd hand samsung i5 2nd gen laptop i paid £170 for a couple of years ago and all i do is browse forums and shopping

is the power usage from my samsung or say a dell mid range to pro range so much more expensive to run or is it all about the name badge ?

Cracking deal.

Decent amount of RAM and storage with option to extend via SD card and M.2 expansion, decent sized screen with full HD, decent enough SOC that takes the old Atom series into faster territories.

For a day to day, general use laptop, for the price it is very good.

I just hope that they haven't used a cheap eMMC that we often see in the lower end machines that makes them look slower than they should otherwise be.

Edit: Just watched the 2 videos and they have put in a really crappy eMMC in, which means that an M.2 SSD will be required to get the best out of it, which, at today's prices, devalues it rather too much.
Picard123 to reddit
6 Aug 17 #29
You just have to change a setting in the BIOS for the eMMC to boost the speed.

Jump to 3m26s in the video - "before" speeds on the left, "after" speeds on the right.

M.2 SSD is still going to be alot faster though obviously.
reddit to Picard123
6 Aug 17 #31
Very interesting and that does make a difference for sure where it generally matters.

I hope that doing this doesn't stress out the eMMC though, shortening it's life or reliability.

You're mixing up the ezbook 3 and the ezbook 3 PRO. The obvious difference if you see them in pics/vids is the '3' has a black screen surround, on the '3' PRO it's the same colour as the laptop, silver or gold.

I'm not a electronics engineer but as far as I understand, these BIOS settings are simply for the eMMC interface bandwidth as there are different industry standards for eMMC, that cover older slower eMMC standards to new, faster standards:

31632459-SLPpP.jpg
The eMMC can only read/write as fast as it can natively read/write. As far as I understand, it's a bit like the type of road you drive your car down. If you drive a Ferrari down a single track country lane (low bandwidth setting) the journey will be slow, even though the car itself can go alot faster. If you put the same Ferrari onto the autobahn (high bandwidth setting) the journey will be alot faster. A Mini Metro on the other hand isn't going to go very fast no matter what type of road its on!

On this page techtablets.com/201…-3/ it says the Bwin eMMC used in this laptop is the 4.5 spec (HS200) so I suspect it will be fine to use the higher settings as the eMMC can only go as fast as it can go in terms of transferring data.

Personally, I wouldn't want to use Photoshop or Lightroom on a laptop in this category because of the CPU limitations but if you did, I think you'd be better off looking at the Chuwi Lapbook 12.3 as it has a 2736 x 1824 screen with a more accurate colour gamut, though it is £50 more expensive than the Ezbook and with less battery life: windowscentral.com/chu…iew

the passmark is around 1700. This seems around a core2duo. I think i3s are around 2000-3000 and i5s around 4000-5000. My 4-core, 8-thread xeon 2.4ghz is around 5,000 and designed as a workstation for such tasks.

A second-hand i7 laptop might do you better although older technology has a weaker battery life as more inefficient. So depends if you need a fast laptop vs a long battery life for travelling around

Picard123

I've got one on order with them. Waiting for it to be despatched...

From what I can see with their 'flash sales', it's based on the number of units they have. If they sell out, they simply end the flash sale early.

Mine was on order awaiting dispatch - however when I queried status yesterday, they said they were unable to fulfill and were offering refund or that I consider buying an alternative item. I may go back to customer service and state that I'm happy to wait until 28AUG.
Picard123

Gearbest stuff normally takes several weeks to arrive via normal mail but I ordered knowing that.

I ordered this on impulse as I was actually after an Ezbook 3 PLUS (rather than PRO) as that comes with a Core M3 and 128GB SSD etc but the release price is ridiculous (over £440). Saw a flash sale for it the other day for £340 but was curious to see whether the flash sale was just a sales ploy and whether the price would go lower. Unfortunately, the flash sale at that price expired and the price has gone up to £480 which is absurd...

Not sure why their prices fluctuate so much. They must constantly be doing deals 'on the fly' with their suppliers and use the number of potential orders to negotiate a lower price with them.

With a premium laptop you hope to get a number of things:

1. Higher quality and calibrated IPS screen, 1080P or higher.
2. Smaller, lighter and better build quality so may last longer.
3. Higher quality trackpad and keyboard.
4. Better warranty - next business day on-site.
5. Better customer support.
6. Higher resale value.

When you add all those things together it can make for a genuinely nicer experience with less hassle and peace of mind.
Picard123

It's like when I buy a Bentley instead of a Ford Focus.

Agharta
17 Aug 17 #74
A cheap laptop with a crappy low resolution screen with a bulky heavy chassis is more like a Skoda from the 80s than a Ford Focus.
There's no need to buy a Bentley just get a Mercedes/BMW etc rather than a Sandero.
Picard123
17 Aug 17 #75
This doesn't have a bulky heavy chassis - it's thin and light. Look at the specs.

This doesn't have a crappy low resolution screen either - it has a 1080p IPS screen, which is more than the 2017 Macbook Air's 1440 x 900 resolution.

If you want to spend £870 on one of these, be my guest:

johnlewis.com/201…001

But I'm not blowing £870 on a laptop when all I want is something light and portable to take around with me, browse the internet, watch a few videos, send emails, and use office apps.
Agharta
17 Aug 17 #76
If you look at the context of my thread you will see it was a response to someone talking about 2nd generation Core i5 Dell and Samsung laptops which he stated lacked a FHD screen and no doubt were generally bulky.
Admittedly it's much harder to track the context these days with the new and 'improved' comments section not allowing deep quoting.

What's the model/spec of your N3450 machine and what specific pages are you referring to?
Picard123
17 Aug 17 #77
What the other poster was questioning was why buy an expensive laptop just to browse the web etc, when a £200 laptop does that just fine. At the end of the day, it all depends on what you use your laptop for. A older person may like a low res 15.6" screen as text, icons etc, all look alot bigger. If they never take the laptop out of their house or move it around, then a bulky old ex-corporate machine may be fine for their needs. Another person may want to pay £900 for a Macbook Air just to send a few emails. My father for example is hilarious. If the internet is down (it's Virgin broadband), he phones up Apple technical support and somehow gets them into some long winded conversation about how to fix it. Someone else might find this Ezbook 3 Pro well suited to their needs, particularly given the price.

Browsing the web is one of the biggest reasons people use laptops for so it's a big deal really. I would't want to use an old skool 2.5Kg 15.6" 1366x768 TN screen laptop to browse the web. As you suggested this is an alternative which for many would be perfectly adequate although even this may struggle with heavy multi-tabbing usage due to the mediocre CPU. Some webpages are so demanding these days of resources.
Picard123
17 Aug 17 #79
The N3450 in this will be fine in terms of having multiple tabs open, even media heavy tabs. Even a 4th gen Celeron can handle something like that. In my experience, the amount of RAM, storage speed (for caching), and browser choice are far more important in terms of smooth multi-tab use.

The single core performance is about 40% of a Core i5-7200U and the same for multi-core workloads which makes it roughly equivalent of an i3 @ 1 -1.2GHz. So it will struggle with some basic stuff at times:

Just got notification from Gearbest that my order has now shipped (order was placed 7 days ago).

Just need to wait for the slow boat from China to arrive now....

I've also been advised that my order is in process of being packed for dispatch. I'm trying to get them to confirm that my order will be dispatched as two separate packages as I ordered 2 of these machines....trying to ensure that I lessen the risk of custom charges being incurred.... :worried:

Someone on the TechTablets Forum says that they are shipping a newer version of this machine now......

Looks like my one is going to be delivered today (according to the "track package" section on the Yodel website).

Given that I placed the order on 16 October and chose standard delivery (with insurance), 2 weeks is pretty good!

Mine has arrived!

Interesting it's the latest v4 version with the hatch on the underside for the m.2 card and extra rubber inserts on the screen edge to protect the screen when closing the lid.

How are people getting on with this?

I've had this for about a week now and it has the extra rubber and hatch for the m.2 card. I've disabled the touchblocker app and done the rest of the tweaks from techtablets. Not a bad little laptop. But it looks better than it is. Does most things with out any issues, but the aluminium finish just feels a little, how to say it, "rushed". A little rough to the touch.
But for the price I can't complain.
Well maybe a bit, touchpad is a bit iffy, not as bad as people say, but I wish they would update the drivers.

Very obvious pros and cons for me at the moment though still in the process of evaluating it.

It "okay" as a laptop but there are some quirks in terms of the Windows installation, driver issues etc that I'm still investigating and trying to rectify. For example, the mic and Cortana do not seem to be happy bedfellows. There's no central volume equalisation that I can see. So for example, you might play a video in Facebook and need to turn the volume to 60% to hear at sufficient volume. Then go to YouTube and the volume booms and you have to turn it down to say 30%. Then on VLC you have to change the volume again..... The speakers are weedy (though the earphones jack is fine and free of hiss).

Also had to enable Windows Update as it was turned off by default (no access to Store otherwise). There's also a weird .exe file that loads on bootup which makes me wonder if they're using a hacked version of Windows. The aluminium finish seems fine to me. Battery life is decent. Screen is sharp but would benefit from higher a higher contrast.

It's no Macbook or XPS13 but then you're paying £180 instead of £780...

This is the performance monitor in Task Manager (CTR-ALT-DEL):

When opening several webpages simultaneously, you can see that the CPU hits 100%. The first graphic is using Chrome and CTRL-mouse click several links on the HUKD page to open 1 new new page, then another new page, then 4 Chrome tabs simultaneously:

31888147-iGdgL.jpg
The graph below is doing the same thing on a very media heavy webpage with alot of embedded videos, sound, adverts and javascript etc (Liverpool Echo website). Opening several media heavy webpages simultaneously seriously maxes out the CPU! The pages load fine but the pages feel sluggish when loading. By comparison, my:
- i5/8GB/960m laptop has no problem with the same task.
- my Celeron/2GB Chromebooks freezes up when I try and load 4 Liverpool Echo pages simulatenously!
Also shows how important 6GB RAM is over 4GB.

31888147-xCFQ8.jpg
Going to have to try that 10W performance tweak to see if I can improve performance under high CPU load. That CPU could definitely do with a boost....

Playing a single YouTube 480p video in Chrome.

31888379-wyRfy.jpg

Same YouTube 480p video playback in Microsoft Edge browser. Interesting seeing the lower CPU load when using Edge (albeit with occasional CPU usage spikes).
