Most of us already know how this works. This is a nice way of availing a prime handset. But beware of a temporary impact on your credit scores.
You need to click the 3GB 129.99 upfront payment option to get the device price of 417.99 (129.99+ 24 x 12) and that is if you play it right. In short,
1. order this deal online,
2. on the day you receive the phone make a chargeable or included phone call with the supplied O2 sim,
3.Request sim unlock online.
4. pay off the device plan and cancel the airtime plan. you will not be charged 24 months airtime or 1 months airtime (some cs advisor may charge this, if so call again for another cs ). The only charge can be pro rata. £1 or £2 based on which day you cancel.
I bought about 10 O2 refresh deals over the last few years and never paid anything extra.
( I was once charged 24 months airtime which was later refunded)

update 9:01 pm 10 Aug 2017: it seems Black is OOS but Rose gold is available on this deal

Not a great deal I'm afraid. I managed to get this on O2 a short while ago for £287.

I know you can't get it now, but a jump of about £130 is too much.

'Temporary impact on credit score'. That's due to cancelling the airtime right? How long is temporary? Hmmmm P.S. Why would some CSA's charge for airtime?

cant find the £417.99?
5Rivers79
9 Aug 17 #15
The cancellation method is simple. You get the phone, ring o2 tell them to cancel the airtime contract and pay for the device. It's o2 themselves or their staff that don't do the work on the other side. Either not cancelling the airtime bit or billing you the whole amount in one go.

On the initial call they tell you it's all done. However, you get the bill a few weeks later by email.

The service is absolutely shocking. They pass you from one person to the next and each say the person before didn't action the refund. Never again!

This isn't a Like New handset. This is a used phone.

O2 has 4 grades for their phones:
- New
- Like New
- Perfect
- Almost Perfect
- Perfectly Fine

Perfectly Fine could have up to 5 deep scratches up to 2mm long.
"Perfectly Fine phones have been a bit more loved, but are still working well. They might have superficial scratches on the back, sides and screen but there will be no more than five deep scratches or chips up to 2mm in length. And you'll get a 12 month warranty to put your mind at ease."

9 Aug 17 #18
There's no guarantee you'll get an absolutely mint phone if you go for 'perfectly fine' - I certainly didn't. Also just applying for credit with this deal knocks your score down a bit - I got an email from Clearscore within days of applying for a Refresh deal, telling me my score had gone down. Applying for credit knocks your score down - although it isn't by much, and I'm not sure how quickly it recovers.

Has anyone tried this? It says that the airtime is a 24month contract, so why would o2 release someone from this without paying the full amount? I seem to be missing something here. Apologies for the daft question.

I happened to be applying to get a credit card and was refused, checked Experian to find out why and it shows outstanding payments to O2 and Experian cost me £15 a month for 6 Months or whatever it costs. So I reckon there are plenty of people with black marks against them but don't know about it. O2 sent me nothing to chase payment so as far as they were concerned account is clear ok. so clearly some incompetent department wreaking havoc.

You aren't gonna care if you already have a credit card and mortgage but if you are younger and need to get loans etc and need your credit score to be good then you don't need this hassle. Had to wait over a year to get a credit card. I've read stories of refused mortgages all because of carrier mistakes.

Also the worst thing you can do in cancel direct debit, always get them to give you the money back as a payment, even if it takes longer to receive the money.
iEimis
9 Aug 17 #29
Yeah, don't cancel the direct debit until you got your credit re-applied back to the account, as when it is re-applied back on your account as far as they are aware you don't owe anything and so missing a payment wouldn't result in anything.

sorry to hear about your experience. O2 refresh has so far been giving me opportunities to own high end phones I would otherwise never have been able to buy! I personally prefer buying iphones on O2 refresh as I often got Full Apple warranty, and the phone being mint, it is as if I bought a brand new phone without just the Box and charger!

Yeah, I think it was a samsung fault as opposed to them. I bought a S7 (not edge) and it worked fine, ended up selling it though.

9 Aug 17 #40

Mate, a phone that sell for £700+ on Apple stores can be had for £418 (with possible Apple warranty). from my perspective (an many others voting hot) is a deal. Ofcourse we also cannot justify Apple or Samsung 8/8+ prices.

Sign up for the free services from Noddle, Clear Score and MSE Credit Club and that covers all three credit reference agencies with free report updates.
Anon
9 Aug 17 #42
I had a similar experience ... twice! Once when getting the 5 and the other on the 5S. A complaint to their complaints team finally got it resolved and the error erased from my credit file (on both occasions).

The lesson learnt was to make sure you monitor your bank account(s) for O2 appearing - and checking credit files regularly for any rogue entries (as O2 do not even bother to notify you that their system thinks you owe them money and does not try taking the payment from your DD despite it still being available to them. Their system can just report it to the credit reference agencies and no doubt to a debt collector, before actually telling you there is a problem!
Anon
9 Aug 17 #43
Most like me will have followed the procedure correctly and it seems to be random selection for the treatment - their system is flawed in a number of ways. It has been going on for years and every Refresh deal throws up more examples of people having issues (a minority - but no fun when it happens to you!) which shows they have not corrected the system issues.

Is anyone got the phone ?
I have placed order last night around 11:20 pm , got an email that O2 has received my order and will be deliver on schedule time, supposed to be deliver today, unfortunately no response from O2 yet , just curious anyone also facing the same issue!
I have checked on my O2 page and there was nothing about yesterday's order. May need to call them on tomorrow,
Anon
10 Aug 17 #45
Their website clearly says orders placed between 11 and midnight are likely to be delivered after 6pm the next day. My experience has been whether you get an email (or sometimes not), it arrives. Normally a text from the courier giving an hour windows when they will deliver on the day of delivery too.
jarekjj
10 Aug 17 #46
I received an txt yesterday saying that it takes longer than usual to dispatch my order' and they will let me know when phone is back in stock. I talked on Live Chat right now and they say it's out of stock, but if you check the deal on the O2 website it's still IN STOCK. What the hell is going on?

Android2g

I got a message to say delivery will be delayed as they've ran out of stock too. They are expecting more stock apparently, so that's possibly why it still shows in stock on the website.
iEimis
10 Aug 17 #49
Just got it, it literally looks brand new, however a good 5cm of adhesive can be seen underneath the screen on one side, so wonder if the screen was replaced. The date on the box is 13/06/2017 and the warranty is expiring on 2nd of June 2018, so it indeed looks like a 14 day return

Just called and paid off the device, but yet again was told that 30 days notice is now required as a standard from both advisers, he offered to move the sim to pay and go from today free of charge, so that the airtime is cancelled immediately, so there is a workaround without paying 1 months worth of airtime, you just got to go for it. Feels like I am the only one this time taking out this deal? Waiting for unlock code currently.

Good luck mate. Looks like your the only one

10 Aug 17 #55
Same here. I suppose the alternative is paying an extra £22 which isn't the end of the world.

For anyone questioning the condition of "perfectly fine" phones under this offer: for the second time now the phone I received was as if it just came out of the box brand new. I checked the serial on Apple.com and the warranty is valid until mid 2018. Suppose this isn't always the case, but you can always return it within 14 days if not.

I made a mistake kids.. Requested my unlock code straight away, should of kept a sim for a while, they were unusually quick with the unlocking request this time round, last time it took 3 days, this time they sent me a reply within what was around 30-45 mins saying that my phone number is not associated with the IMEI number. I requested one again in the hope that during the night it will somehow associate itself. On SE unlock the device never actually appeared on the website, but was unlocked no problem.

iEimis
11 Aug 17 #61
It's very odd these days with the unlocking. Supossedly you are meant to keep the sim in the phone for 24 hours+, even then the phone doesn't appear on the website, or at least it didn't for me.
idealstandard
11 Aug 17 #62
. Supposedly this takes 24 hours. I was told to "make a few chargable calls" but surely one call to 202 is the same thing.
idealstandard
11 Aug 17 #63
...oops - start of last message was somehow cut off by the site/browser. Was just saying you're supposed to make a call from the phone with an O2 SIM in order for the network to register the IMEI of the iPhone. And to allow about 24 hours for this to register.
mkh93 to idealstandard
11 Aug 17 #64
"2. on the day you receive the phone make a chargeable or included phone call with the supplied O2 sim," only then your phone IMEI is registered on O2 and you can request unlock
iEimis
11 Aug 17 #65
It's really odd, because pay and go card that I've put in it to first test it if it was unlocked or not (it was an EE card and then O2 pay and go card) recognised the phone on the website within couple of minutes, whereas pay monthly seem to be taking ages.

I just been told on Live Chat that my order from Wednesday is delayed as it is out of stock. This is annoying as when I ordered, it was in stock, in fact it was in stock for most of the day yesterday as well. They suggested I can cancel the order, no way! Any advice what to do? What are my rights if I placed the order and they took the money already?
mkh93
11 Aug 17 #67
I would rather wait than cancel the order. This is not your fault anyway. Chase them hard and they may offer some compensation for the delay? . I once heard of someone in similar situation, when O2 ended up sending a brand new phone.

I did the same. Requested unlock on Iive chat last night and today paid off the handset and "upgraded" to £9 30 day sim only, all online using My O2 page. Tomorrow I'm going to call 202 and cancel 30 day contract.
The same procedure worked fine for me couple of weeks ago on a different refresh deal.

Just paid off for phone and cancelled airtime, said that I would recieve a bill for 3 days of line rental, is this correct?
jarekjj
16 Aug 17 #89
You already have full month bill on your account.
You can cancel direct debit and have outstanding payment for your bill when they try to collect the payment in 14 days. This will be 'paid' when they issue next bill with credit.

The other way is to pay the bill and then receive credit with the next bill which they will transfer to your bank account but you need to ask for it on Live Chat. Both ways worked fine for me.

16 Aug 17 #90

And how did you pay off the device in full?
jarekjj
16 Aug 17 #92
You need to go to Upgrade option in your My O2 page, then select Pay off the device and upgrade to SIM Only option and 30 Day contract. Select the cheapest one for £9 and go to checkout. It will add device pay off balance.

mkh93
1 Oct 17 #96
Here is what I did: there is an option online to upgrade and payoff device plan and switch to sim only 30 day term contract for £9/ month. Once I switched then I spoke to CS to terminate my sim only 30 days contract but within 14 days cool off, so I don't even pay £9 rather a few days pro rata. CS migrated my contract to PayGo sim so once that is activated the earlier sim is automatically disconnected. In your case if CS push for 30days contract £9 is not the end of the world! from my experience each CS may deal differently, so always try again with a different CS
