It would do, as it's a device connected to your phone's hotspot, using up your data like a computer or phone would. However, Google have stopped them connecting to mobile hotspots anyway. It's supposed to be used on a local home network connected to a conventional router.

No - Casting is purely on a local link between your phone and the chromecast. No Mobile data (3G/4G) connectivity required.
evilhomeruk to mgowans
23 Aug 17#8
That's not quite how it works. When you cast, be it from your phone or chrome browser tab on a computer, it simply sends a link to the content like a Netflix movie or an iPlayer program, like you'd share a bookmark, then the Chromecast uses the bookmark to request the content. So it would use the data of whatever route to the internet it's hooked up to.

Oh that's interesting.. I didn't know you could do that.. I've only ever casted using screen mirroring which would be a workaround to avoid tethering?

You need to have installed a compatible app on your phone that supports Chromecast. For example, the Youtube app supports Chromecast, so when you're on your wifi network at home your phone can 'see' there's also a Chromecast on the network and you'll see a little Chromecast icon in the app. When you're watching a video, click Chromecast and it will ask which Chromecast device you wish to cast to (if you have more than one), and then it sends a command to the Chromecast saying "Please play this video" and the Chromecast goes off and plays the video for you. You could turn your phone off at this point and the video will still work because all the Chromecast is doing is obeying the command "Play this video".
It only works on wifi networks (so you can't use your mobile data with it as it wouldn't work) and not all apps support it (but the major ones do, such as Netflix).

Casting uses your router. There is no content streamed directly from your device. If you install an app on your device that supports casting your device simply instructs the Chromecast to connect to your router and stream the content directly... It's not the same as AirPlay for example which streams from your device to the router and then to the Chromecast :nerd:

Why does everyone keep mentioning tethering? It connects to your home wifi network, copying the settings from your phone when you first set it up (this might be where you're confused?). It uses this wifi network to communicate with your phone/computer, and to stream the media (eg YouTube or Netflix) from the Internet as instructed to by your phone's app if you press the cast button. No tethering anywhere in this process.

The Chromecast can mirror your device, so constantly receives data in this case, eg when you tell your Android phone to 'cast', AirPlay style. I use this sometimes as not all apps have Chromecast support built in.
Most things are 'native' though, and as mentioned the Chromecast does all the rest once it's told what to do.

Anyone know if you could cast bt sports to your tv from an iPhone with this?
How works 1. Connect chromecast to tv via hdmi and connect to your chosen internet (usually WiFi can be hotspot tethering)
2. You communicate with chromecast via many devices, laptop mobile etc. Many sites and apps have a 'cast' button which is easiest and best way but you can cast screen of device via Google app on phone etc. Videostream is great on laptop to stream movies you have downloaded.
3. Think of the mobile laptop etc as a remote that tell the chromecast where to obtain and stream the content. The chromecast will use data from the chosen internet source above usually WIFI
Fantastic bit of kit use mine everyday for casting youtube of children's tv.

Is there any reason for me to have one of these if I already have a Fire TV stick (with Prime) and a NowTV?
dessala to maffj
23 Aug 17#31
No. FireTv stick comes with Googlecast built in. There are minor differences & pros and cons though. CC will play YT compatible videos in 60FPS and FireTV stick in 30FPS . Huge difference to me but probably irrelevant for many.

23 Aug 17#39
No it doesn't. Although you can cast certain compatible apps (YouTube, Netflix for example) that have their own respective apps on the Fire Stick, you can't cast to it like you would a dedicated Chromecast. So, you can't cast BT Sports to Fire Stick etc.

I picked one of these up the last time it was £19 in Curry's. Great bit of kit - casting is so simple via my iphone (netflix, Youtube and NowTV are the apps I've used most). Just a shame that you can't control the casting via the iphone Control Centre (unless I am missing something) - you need to go into the casting app (ie Netflix) for play, pause etc - but this is very easy, would just save a couple of clicks if this could be possible via Control Centre.

Good deal, but bear in mind there was roughly 2 year gap between Chromecast 1 and Chromecast 2 (this one). And Chromecast 2 was released in September 2015.
If you don't have an urgent need, might be worth waiting.
Counter argument: any new version is unlikely to be discounted immediately, and there wasn't much real-world performance difference between 1 and 2.

No... it doesn't. It comes with Miracast built in, which is different tech to Chromecast. That's why you can't use a Firestick to from Google Play Movies etc to a Fire Stick. You can cast the phone's screen, as long as your phone supports Miracast.

4. On ya phone web browser search for "cartoon hd apk", download and install.
5. Open cartoon hd, select movie or tv show then select custom player and play it through "allcast".
6. Allcast will then open and you will see your chromecast, select chromecast and play film of choice.

My Chromecast turned up yesterday, and using my Huawei P9 lite,I have found that....
Terrarium TV works flawlessly, only tried the 1080p links though, but super smooth play back, works straight of the Terrarium app.
Amazon Prime Video, works, but need to use the cast screen/audio feature,in the ChromeCast app, which can in some instances cause a bit of choppiness/pixelating. I found it works fine if you just reboot everything though.Used for at least 6 hours yesterday, watching Amazon Prime video, only needed to reboot everything once, due to pixellation.
Blaze TV app, also working via 'cast screen/audio' feature was quite choppy watching 'Forged in Fire',but picture was good for the most of it,would be a lot better if it was not so choppy though.
UKTV Play app worked in the same way,but unfortunately even in full screen the right hand side of the screen has the usual Android triangle, circle, square options to the right side of the screen.
Just use this for the jobs that the Now TV box wont do,and so far I am pleased!.
All in all,not bad for under £20.
