In the afore mentioned Mythbusters the conclusion to why fires had started whilst filling up was (and remember this was in america where high temperatures and low humidity cause more static to be generated)
Static electricity was generated by peoples clothes rubbing against the synthetic car seats. As they pulled the nozzle out after filling up the fumes coming from the filler opening were ignited by static spark from their hand. It just so happened that in some of the forecourt videos the person also had a mobile.
So if I were you I'd switch the pumps off when anyone wearing a primark dress gets out of a pimped saxo with polyester leopard skin seat covers. Not wen u would spot someone usin a fone with the batteries

"1. You can use your Instant Reloadable Card for just about everything you'll need in your grocery shop! The only things excluded are petrol and concessions stores, such as Costa, Harris + Hoole and Giraffe"
I seem to remember Sainsbury's changing their policy so you couldn't use it in their petrol kiosks either.

Actually no, the app specifically tells you not to get out the car with your phone, there is a giant QR code that you scan from sitting in the car, my phone picks it up without even rolling the window down. You set up a maximum payment (usually I leave it at a full tank value) and then you get a refund for the difference.

It's not complete nonsense. You are both right and the ignition risk is EXTREMELY low.
Industry position The use of mobile phones on UKPIA members’ forecourts is actively discouraged for several reasons:
Distraction - Using mobile phones can create a serious distraction for people dispensing fuel or crossing the forecourt due to the number of vehicles moving. Traffic movements will always present a risk for customers. However the distraction caused to pedestrians by mobile phones increases the risk of accidents.
Risk of incendive sparking - Mobile phones are not designed and certified for use in explosive atmospheres which exist temporarily around the pump and nozzle during refuelling as well as around the fill and vent pipes during petrol deliveries.Such use is expressly forbidden by law under the conditions of the petroleum licence and associated guidance. Whilst the risk of incendive sparking from mobile phones is low, they are not intrinsically safe devices and should not be used in those hazardous areas that exist on a forecourt. Generally, there is no need to restrict the use of mobile telephones in other areas of the forecourt, such as in the shop, in motor vehicles parked on the forecourt or in other non-hazardous areas.
None of my local Shells even have a pay by phone facility.

Thanks. Used this last time with no issues. Though I don't generally use shell that often. Their V Power is much more expensive than Tesco Momentum 99 and I just pay for fuel on Tesco gift cards anyway so that gives me 4% (c 5p per litre) off fuel anyway. I'll take this for the free fiver though. You can just select the pump on your phone and authorise the payment and then get out of the car and refuel

They'll be buying the Tesco gift cards at a discounted price (4%). I used to buy Tesco gift cards for 10% off so would get 10% off all fuel purchases at Tesco or Esso with a Tesco Express attached to it.

I have worked in mobile telecoms for over 18 years and this idea is mostly a myth. You need a spark or electrical charge, phones won't do that. The only issue would be if the phone battery malfunctions. Sure it could happen in 0.0001% of phones but then again you can get struck by lightning or win the the lottery

Shell must think there is a risk as the opening safety message says "Please be aware that you must not have conversations on your mobile device whilst on a forecourt." Perhaps if you have a heated conversation the petrol vapours might ignite. :raised_hand:
