That was proven years back to be rubbish. You are more likely to have static on your person than from a phone and in fact the static from your person has caused problems in the past. Have you never heard the 'crack' of static as you touch the car sometimes when opening the petrol cap

Free fuel is always good. Although I have always had trouble using Fill Up & Go, every month I get an offer for 100 bonus points and it never registers to my account. I have to complain on Twitter and then go through a discussion with customer services to get them added, they stopped being so accommodating after the 5th time.
I tend not to bother using it now.

To people behind you probably, I just connect this before leaving my car, the person at the till approves it, then you begin filling. So the staff are aware you've paid.

Urban myth. Top gear did an episode trying to prove this and nothing happened despite about a dozen mobiles ringing in a caravan that had petrol poured inside.

In the afore mentioned Mythbusters the conclusion to why fires had started whilst filling up was (and remember this was in america where high temperatures and low humidity cause more static to be generated)

Static electricity was generated by peoples clothes rubbing against the synthetic car seats. As they pulled the nozzle out after filling up the fumes coming from the filler opening were ignited by static spark from their hand. It just so happened that in some of the forecourt videos the person also had a mobile.

So if I were you I'd switch the pumps off when anyone wearing a primark dress gets out of a pimped saxo with polyester leopard skin seat covers. Not wen u would spot someone usin a fone with the batteries

No, you can only use your phone inside the car. Use it outside the car and they'll refuse to serve you fuel. Did no one watch the safety video in the app?
Bossworld
17 Aug 17 #78
I'd wondered about this sort of thing previously, but our gateway specifically states

"1. You can use your Instant Reloadable Card for just about everything you'll need in your grocery shop! The only things excluded are petrol and concessions stores, such as Costa, Harris + Hoole and Giraffe"

I seem to remember Sainsbury's changing their policy so you couldn't use it in their petrol kiosks either.

Wonder if it's just a policy that's not enforced.

C'mon guys n gals. Its simple nd safe to use. Been using for years. It ony takes 2 seconds to tap some buttons, once its all set up, before coming out of car and filling up and driving away. No need to use phone outside car and faffing so u get honked buy driver behind u. See vids on how to use first.

Actually no, the app specifically tells you not to get out the car with your phone, there is a giant QR code that you scan from sitting in the car, my phone picks it up without even rolling the window down. You set up a maximum payment (usually I leave it at a full tank value) and then you get a refund for the difference.

mattmerch
17 Aug 17 #72
on mythbusters they found the risk of sparks at the pump came from ppl building up a static charger as they slid off the seats in the car but no matter how hard they tried they could not get a mobile phone to cause a fire

It's not complete nonsense. You are both right and the ignition risk is EXTREMELY low.

Industry position
The use of mobile phones on UKPIA members’ forecourts is actively discouraged for several reasons:

Distraction - Using mobile phones can create a serious distraction for people dispensing fuel or crossing the forecourt due to the number of vehicles moving. Traffic movements will always present a risk for customers. However the distraction caused to pedestrians by mobile phones increases the risk of accidents.

Risk of incendive sparking - Mobile phones are not designed and certified for use in explosive atmospheres which exist temporarily around the pump and nozzle during refuelling as well as around the fill and vent pipes during petrol deliveries.Such use is expressly forbidden by law under the conditions of the petroleum licence and associated guidance. Whilst the risk of incendive sparking from mobile phones is low, they are not intrinsically safe devices and should not be used in those hazardous areas that exist on a forecourt. Generally, there is no need to restrict the use of mobile telephones in other areas of the forecourt, such as in the shop, in motor vehicles parked on the forecourt or in other non-hazardous areas.

Are you referring to your PayPal account or Shell app?

If the latter, have you upgraded your account? They recently changed their backend systems so you now only need one set of credentials for the Shell and Fill Up & Go accounts. However, you’re required to upgrade the account.

Simply kill the app and try accessing your account. You should hen be prompted to upgrade.

Not so sure about using SamsungNote 7 on forecourt though
Cant use within boundary of Oil refinery's though 'we cant use them in rail sidings at refinery
Also our radios and torches have to be classed as intrinsically safe so assume risk is with battery
not spark from RF .So there must be some element of risk

16 Aug 17 #33
Thanks. Used this last time with no issues. Though I don't generally use shell that often. Their V Power is much more expensive than Tesco Momentum 99 and I just pay for fuel on Tesco gift cards anyway so that gives me 4% (c 5p per litre) off fuel anyway. I'll take this for the free fiver though. You can just select the pump on your phone and authorise the payment and then get out of the car and refuel
tapash to Speedbirdjw
16 Aug 17 #35
Can you please explain how paying by Tesco gift card you get 5c off?
flyingflea to tapash
16 Aug 17 #39
They'll be buying the Tesco gift cards at a discounted price (4%). I used to buy Tesco gift cards for 10% off so would get 10% off all fuel purchases at Tesco or Esso with a Tesco Express attached to it.

16 Aug 17 #38
I have worked in mobile telecoms for over 18 years and this idea is mostly a myth. You need a spark or electrical charge, phones won't do that. The only issue would be if the phone battery malfunctions. Sure it could happen in 0.0001% of phones but then again you can get struck by lightning or win the the lottery

16 Aug 17 #34
Shell must think there is a risk as the opening safety message says "Please be aware that you must not have conversations on your mobile device whilst on a forecourt." Perhaps if you have a heated conversation the petrol vapours might ignite. :raised_hand:

They tested mobile phones on Myth Buster some time back...even put mobiles into a bucket of petrol and phoned them, tested on the fumes etc etc...all nonsense!!! Nothing happened.
I believe that mobiles were banned from Petrol Forecourts at the start due to the belief that they would/may/could interfere with the electronic readings of fuel taken and the garage would lose some money...again, nonsense!!! :face_with_monocle:

As for the stability of the app it is often down to the lazy sod at the checkout letting it timeout rather than tap accept on the bloody screen, Giltbrook has been broken for most of this year as apparantly they don't have the staff to go test it.
