Here is a lovely 5 night trip to Verona, Lake Garda and Venice, ideal for those that want to visit some of Italy and don't mind using the trains to travel about.
28/09-30/09 Fly early morning from London Stansted to Verona. As you arrive early morning you can make the most of the first day visiting the arena and some of the many attractions of Verona. I'd recommend getting a Verona pass if you enjoy churches and history as I really made the most of mine when I visited and the castle is also well worth spending a good half a day too. You will stay at the Casa Sen Zeno which has good reviews and is ideally placed for walking the main attractions. Rooms are private ensuite.
30/09-02/10 You will take the train around 17 mins from Verona to Peschiera del Garda. In Garda you will stay at Garda Lake Hostel and rooms are private and ensuite. I did look at alternatives more expensive but this has great reviews, is in a good location and I think on balance is a far nicer place to stay than some of the more expensive and lower rated places. It's also ideally placed for getting around Garda, although if you wanted to hire a car when you are there you could do easily enough but it is easy to explore the lake on the boats.
02/10-03/10 You will catch the direct train to Venice today. It's under an hour and half direct and you will literally walk out of the station onto the grand canal. This is always the way I arrive into Venice as walking out of the station and seeing the grand canal in front of you is perfect. Choosing to stay around this area will always be a premium, although if you choose to stay in Mestre or Lido you will almost find cheaper. I think for a short time and given you only have one night in Venice it's worth paying and staying near St Marks/Rialto area and you'll stay for 1 night at the San Lio Tourist House. Rooms have private bathrooms.
On 3rd you don't leave Venice until after 10pm so the good thing is you have another full day to explore.
Flight from Venice to London €39.20/£35.84 book on ryanair.com
Total £364.50/£182.25pp
Don't forget city tax is normally extra in Italy at check-in at hotels. Also you will need to sort our transfers from airport to hotel and vice versa which I haven't included as there are many options such as bus, train, shuttle and taxi and I know people have different preferences.

We did this very trip earler this year as we were attending a wedding on Lake Como. Didn't do Verona at all really, as we ran out of time, so another day maybe.
For what it's worth we stayed at Meublè AdrianaVicolo Strentelle 21, Sirmione, BS, 25019, Italy, 0203 027 9779 ( from £76 currently on Hotels.com) which is in the centre of Sirmione with a view landward to the Castle from the roof terrace. Basic , but puts you in easy walking of the many resturants in Sirmione. Sirmione is bottom centre of Lake Garda so the other places can be reached by the ferries from there too.
I'd second getting the train into Venice too, so easy. We actually had a hire car via BA which gave us 'free' days' so we ended up parking it in a secured car park in Verona near to the station, so not so 'free' afterall. We booked the train via the Trenitalia web site, which was in English.
As for Venice, come out of the station and to the right on the canal is a ferry booth, where you can get a ferry pass for x number of hours/days. This makes the ferry service so much easier and cheaper to do.
We stayed at Hotel Al Codega (Double £145+) which i can recommend, it was ideally centred near to St Marks etc. A bit pricy for some maybe, but we won't be going back anyday soon i'm afraid :-(
I don't want to put any dampeners on this deal as its a good price, but having got back from Lake Garda yesterday, I must say the Italian trains/buses are very unreliable, cheap, but unreliable. One bus I caught was either running 45 minutes late, or the one I was due to catch running 15 minutes early. One little point from the main description above, "Percheria Del Garda" and "Garda" are two different towns some 15 miles apart. Its probably just a typo, but double check. (I caught a bus from one to the other - and yes, that one was running 20 minutes late) One other option, you might want to consider flying into Milan rather than Verona. Cant comment on flight prices, but also a very good city to visit. Enjoy Italy - I did. Beautiful area to visit.

The train station Peschiera del Garda and the accommodation are close by, you will catch the train to Peschiera del Garda from Verona and the accommodation is in Peschiera del Garda, not Garda (the other town). Yes, Italian public transport is definitely not as efficient as say public transport in Japan and my experience of trains is that they don't always run on time, the overnight one from Paris to Venice was late, but I think you just kind of get use to it. The buses in Verona I used were on time but yes, rather take any times as guidance. That said, I still think its better than driving.
