Energy giant E.on has become the first major energy supplier to offer 0% finance deals on boilers – available even if you aren't one of its customers.
The firm will now allow you to spread the cost of a new boiler – which can typically be about £2,300 according to the Energy Saving Trust – through an interest-free loan available over a payment period of two, three or four years.
Although 0% boiler finance deals are on offer from firms such as EnergyCare Group and Boiler Plan UK that allow you to spread the cost interest-free, this is the first from a major energy supplier.
How does the E.on scheme work? It's open to UK residents who are aged over 18 and regularly employed for at least 16 hours a week, self-employed, retired or on long-term disability benefit. You'll also need to pass a credit check when applying for the finance.
There's no need to switch to E.on if you want to get a new boiler under this offer, and no need to stick with the company if you're an existing customer, who takes up the offer and then wants to switch away later. Here's how it works:
Get a quote via its website or by calling 0330 400 1083.You'll then have a 'no-obligation home survey' visit which details the offer and cost.Compare the quote to other available offers to ensure you're getting the best deal.If you decide to go ahead you can book for installation (its cost will be part of the quote).Once installed, the new boiler is covered by a five-year manufacturer's guarantee.E.on is offering two 0% finance options – you can choose to pay no deposit or a 50% deposit letting you borrow between £1,000 and £10,000 on your new boiler installation and spreading the cost over two to four years. Pass the credit check and you'll get the deal.
Based on a cost of £2,500 and a three-year repayment period, you'd pay £69.44 for 35 months and a final payment of £69.60. Or, if you paid £1,250 upfront, your repayments would be £34.72 for 35 months and a final payment of £34.80.
If you miss a payment, it will affect your credit score, and you may be charged for late payments. If you miss multiple payments, your debt may be passed to a collection agency.
If you take up the offer, E.on Energy Installation Services will be credit broker, while Barclays Partner Finance – a trading name of Clydesdale Financial Services and part of Barclays – will act as finance lender. Both are regulated and authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.
According to the supplier, the boilers are from Worcester Bosch Group and rated 'A' for efficiency.
Might suit some rather than getting a 0% credit card

A local company will probably fit for half the price!

Totally agree but its British Gas that are the rip off merchants! Also a local company or plumber is going to want good old hard cash. This spreads the cost over four years. Also its a no obligation quote so you simply compare these to the local company

E.on is one of the big six - I expect it to be as awful as British Gas unless proven otherwise. Add the price of a personal loan to your local company's quote and see if it's more expensive.

The local Energy Saving Trust here in Scotland's giving a 25% grant on new boilers - and you're not stuck with what their own suppliers.

It this the case - google throws me to Home Energy Scotland loan, not a 25% grant?

We're buying an old 3 bed end terrace with back boiler. Any ideas on cost to replace with a decent combi?

Really depends on work involved. As a guess from experience - and a decent worcester boiler (34kw) you'd be looking at around £2500 - £3000

Credit is cheap anyway, so focus on getting the best quote you can and look for a boiler with a long guarantee. British Gas quoted me £4,500 but a local firm charged me around £2,000 to install a Baxi Combi with a 7 year warranty. Some now have 10 year warranties such as this one: baxi.co.uk/gas…htm Shop around and read about the boiler you are being offered.

You can get 0%on huge number of credit cards Inc cash advance if your local plumber doesn't take cards .If you use your brain it can work out virtually interest free so no need to pay hugely inflated boiler prices to rip off energy companies.

You will beat the E-on price by doing the following.
Go to eBay and search for “boiler supplied and fitted” then
sort by nearest first. Choose a leading brand with a long guarantee i.e.
Worcester with a 7 year guarantee.
If you must borrow money do that separately.

I did all that but couldn't select 'nearest first'.. BG quoted me 3.5k unbelievable. Though, a interest free over four years seems like a sensible choice for me. Wonder if there's any other out there

In order to select nearest first, go to the top right where
it says sort, the default is best match, hover over this and select nearest
first from the drop down menu.
If for the sake of example we assume that you live in near
Birmingham, you will find companies that will fit a Worcester Greenstar 30i
Combi Boiler for less than £1300.
Obviously if you want to move the boiler or add any extras,
the price will go up. I would suggest that you add a Magnaclean filter if one
is not already fitted, that should add about £120.
One last suggestion, if you’ve got a hot water tank, keep it.
It is so much more pleasant to live with than a combi, especially when there is
more than one person in the house.

And anyone who takes a £1000 boiler and charges £300 to fit is either far too cheap or not doing it right.
You can guarantee the system Isnt being flushed and a full commission isnt being done. It'll bite you in the ass when things go wrong.

£4500... jeeesus.
I know it depends on siting and pipework involved but £3k for additional materials and a couple of days labour..?!
