Much better alternative to the £200-£250 low end 15.6" laptops you see in Currys with fuzzy TN panels and 1024x768 resolutions.

This is a good laptop for basic day to day tasks at an excellent price particularly during these Brexit times.

Use the coupon code ChuwiLapA in the basket to drop the price from £250 to £175.

Isn't that one shipped from outside the EU? So won't you need to pay vat and duty on it?

Also code didn't work for me. I could use code 'Chuwi' to take 13% off but that only takes the price down to £218.06.

Yeah I saw that as part of my research for this deal. Decided not to reference it as I suspect that the item is drop shipped from China. The seller is based in China. Also the description has errors which would put me off buying from him as he doesn't seem to know precisely what product he's selling. He also doesn't make it clear whether it has an M.2 slot, whether it's Windows 10 Chinese single language version or Windows 10 English etc. Not worth the risk in my opinion as there are often different versions of these Chinese laptops.
reddit to Picard123

Why does the presence of an M.2 slot need clarifying when it's not stated in the specs and where does it even mention the fact that it may be W10 Chinese language? The description seems fine.

Even with Gearbest the item comes from China of course.

Talking of not necessarily knowing what you are selling, take a look at two of the questions on the Gearbest site.

  • QCan i expand the SSD to 256gb m.2????

    By Jackson Pool May-14/2017 06:05:30

    A
    Hello Jackson,

External Memory: TF card up to 128GB (not included)

  • QCan I add an ssd on this lapbook?

    By Hermy Apr-22/2017 02:04:27

    A
    Hello Hermy,
Yes, you can add a ssd on this lapbook.

Essentially, two contradictory answers.

I can't see why you would have reservations and it gets shipped in 1 day from within the UK, Paypal protection and a make an offer option, so may be able to get it even cheaper.

So quick delivery without having to pay any additional costs for DHL etc, which adds nearly £8 to the cost, as well as the extra for shipping insurance that should be considered essential and a guarantee to avoid the possible £35 customs costs, which are pretty much guaranteed for expedited shipping.

It is a drop ship from China as there are many retailers that list the items in the same way for Hayes, Middlesex.

If I were buying I'd go for the ebay route on this ocassion.

It might be okay. It might not be. I think you need to order it from that Ebay guy and tell us ;-)

- there's no reference to Windows 10 English in the Ebay description. It may be English, it may not be. Alot of laptops sourced from China have the Windows 10 Single Language Chinese version installed. The licence is only for the Chinese version and doesn't work for WIndows 10 Home English (multi-language licences are more expensive). Therefore you can't just download language packs etc and it's not a case of simply changing the language / region settings. If it is the single language version of Windows Chinese, you would need to reinstall Windows again with a new key.

- there's no reference to any M.2 slot in the Ebay description either. It may have one, it may not.

No recourse via PayPal if one or both are missing as he hasn't said anything that's false.

Which model of tablet did you have and what issue did you have with it?
7777777 to Picard123
14 Aug 17 #16
vi10, no sound and no WiFi anymore (driver issue) - seems a common problem after windows update. Chuwi hides the head in sand and either ignores questions or recommends reinstalling the same firmware ... it initially works then the issue reoccurs once windows gets updated.
Picard123 to 7777777
14 Aug 17 #17
Can you not install the individual drivers again through device manager?
7777777 to Picard123
14 Aug 17 #18
thanks for your post.

nope, the automatic update won't find anything better and the manual installation of e.g.broadcom wifi drivers (surely for this WiFi module and a few different revisions tried ) shows the installation process as usual but this doesn't change anything, still yellow question marks in device manager.i even reinstalled windows a couple of times and installed all the missing drivers one by one manually, that went fine, it works ok but only until the windows is getting updated.

there are plenty of posts from people facing the same issues on chuwi forum, they ask for more info and once requested info is provided chuwi fails to reply.
Picard123 to 7777777
14 Aug 17 #19
I wouldn't use Windows automatic update. I would identify the specific wifi chip, sound chip etc through a utility like HWinfo and then try different versions of the drivers inc the previous pre-update drivers and install individually through device manager. It might also be useful if you can find a 'dump' of the original drivers that someone might have uploaded online and try using those. The TechTablets guy sometimes uploads dumps when he has to install English windows to replace the Chinese version (he a takes a 'dump' of the original drivers).

You won't want to hear this but it would have been useful to take a backup image of your partition before doing any major Windows updates just in case the update fails....
7777777 to Picard123
14 Aug 17 #20
I have got damp of the system as well as the individual drivers, it works afresh but then fails once updates come. I know I could then stop all the updates but don't like the idea of a system that is not updated for 18months.

The updates install fine, it's just the 2 drivers that fail with them
Picard123 to 7777777
14 Aug 17 #21
TBH, it sounds like more like an issue with Microsoft and the drivers it sends out with Windows 10 not being entirely compatible with the particular wifi or sound chip particularly if say that the older drivers work. I had similar issues with a Lenovo laptop when the HDD failed and I had to do a clean install of Windows - it took absolutely ages trying to iron out all the individual driver issues.
7777777 to Picard123
14 Aug 17 #22
Yep,most likely but this isn't chuwi's hardware and other manufacturers probably faced exactly the same issues. I don't believe that all tablets and laptops with the same Broadcom and Realtek modules suddenly stopped working well because Windows released incompatible update.

A responsible manufacturer make sure that their product works of at least tries. I know of plenty of examples when manufacturers rewrite the no longer supported drivers themselves in order to deliver basic functionality. This product's service was abandoned by chuwi right after the launch and that shouldn't be the case.

I have got cheaper tablets at home ( Lenovo tab 3, kindle fire hd) and they are so much superior products despite inferior (at least on the paper) spec...because they work
Picard123 to 7777777
14 Aug 17 #23
A small company like Chuwi is obviously going to have less resources to devote to driver issues on a cheap tab with wafer thin margins than say the Microsoft driver team on the Surface Book but I still suspect the issue is more Microsoft related and one of the downsides of Windows requiring individual drivers for the million and one different pieces of hardware out there. Unless Chuwi have picked very obscure or old Broadcom or Realtek chips which are no longer supported, it's really for Broadcom and Realtek to provide the appropriate drivers. I remember that even Nvidia had problems when Microsoft were forcing through graphic card driver updates that conflicted with a number of their cards.

As for the Tab 3 and Kindle which you mentioned, neither of them are Windows based which is probably why they don't have the same problems!

Don't want to put a spanner in the works but:
forum.chuwi.com/thr…tml

New version seems to have dropped the M.2 slot...

I thought the Yepo 737 was looking good, but it seems that has a 128Gb eMMc, not SSD, plus its only 2.4mhz wifi.
Picard123 to winchman
14 Aug 17 #15
That's interesting actually.

Just goes to show that with these Chinese laptops, its best to buy from a known source (ideally clarifying your requirements beforehand) as there seem to be different revisions of them as it's not clear from the model description which one is which!

Hi picard123
May I pick your brains, since you seem ter know yer stuff ? :relaxed: . PLEASE feel free to ignore, seriously.

Take 2 Laptops.
1 has HDMI OUT, the other only VGA OUT. Now connect both (or 1 at a time) to the same big screen LCD TV, that has BOTH HDMI & VGA inputs...erm, obviously  and to simplify, now call these Laptops "HDMI & VGA".

Attach "VGA", and the transfer to the big screen is perfect...attach HDMI, and the resolution of "HDMI" is auto changed at the BLINK of an eye, (well...it made me blink when I saw it happen) to a lower setting (currently recommended as, and set by default at 1366 X 768) down to 1280 x ? (I forget the 2nd part) Result? The transferred picture is too big. Slightly too tall, and slightly too wide.

An interesting point is that when HDMI's resolution resets down, and I open the resolutions "drop down box" in the hope of restoring it to the default, NO options are now available in the "1300" range...any ideas? I'm no techie BTW :-)

I have "splashed the cash" and ordered a HDMI > VGA cable, in an attempt to fool "HDMI" into thinking it's had a SEX change  Oh well, it's worth a shot...any ideas?

Cheers all.

Worth pointing out that with the odd honourable exception, Chinese manufacturers have a different mindset than we are used to in the West. Thorough product develpment, quality control and post sale support are viewed as optional luxuries. Corners are sometimes cut e.g. quality parts substituted for inferior ones if needs require. Once a device is launched, it goes on the back burner and the focus is on rushing to get the next product finished and out the door. For this reason it is unlikely that a Chinese manufacturer will become a mainstream brand anytime soon.

I purchased a dual OS Chuwi Hi 12 tablet last year. Great concept, decent hardware, lovely screen but with several bugs. e.g. The microsd slot now doesn't work on both Android and Windows 10 (common fault with no Chuwi fix) , excessive battery drain and so on. Zero prospect of an official upgrade to the Android 5 it came with. Unless you like problem solving, figuring out workarounds and smoothing rough edges, then perhaps best leaving chuwi products alone.

From a commercial perspective, there's always an ongoing cost associated with providing software updates particularly as you have to pay licensing fees to Google for the different versions of Android. Even Samsung don't provide support or upgrades for versions of Android on their older phones.

Cheap tablets from smaller Chinese manufacturers are never going to have the quality of say an iPad or the technical support from Apple as margins are already wafer thin. That's one reason why they're cheaper in the first place. If I were to buy an Android tablet for £100, I would buy it in the knowledge that that is what you're getting and nothing else in future. If you want something with X number of years of future proofing and software updates, it's better to buy a (more expensive) higher end device.

That said, I think you'll see a number of manufacturers increasingly provide premium devices out of China in the near future and those products will just get better and better. You only have to look at how well companies like Huawei, Xiaomi and One Plus are doing to know that. The Xiaomi Air 12/13 for example is a superb laptop (though not cheap) and that was their first attempt. I can definitely see companies like Jumper and Chuwi bringing out products in the near future that are increasingly competitive with established brands. The Jumper EZBook3 Plus looks good as does the forthcoming Chuwi Lapbook Air. Which each generation of product, they will improve. Let's not forget that these are relatively young companies whereas the like of HP and Apple have been around for decades.

When you think about it, most companies are just system builders who buy in parts from other companies - CPU, motherboard, LCD panels, keyboards etc - and put them together rather than produce bespoke designs themselves. WIth that in mind, it really shouldn't be difficult to produce a good quality device provided you a make a good selection of components in the first place. The issue isn't whether its possible but whether its viable in terms of cost, sales and profitability for them. The Xiaomi Air for example is very well balanced in terms of component choices and quality but then, its noticeably more expensive (presumably to allow a profit margin) at £380-£700. The Chuwi Lapbook 14.1 is alot cheaper at £175 but then there are obviously compromises in terms of some component choices eg. N3450 CPU, 64GB storage etc and it's never going to have the build quality of a Macbook at £1,000. At the end of the day, you pay your money and make your own choice. As long as you make the purchase with your eyes wide open, I think it's good that there is the choice available to consumers.
