Just seen this on Ebuyer's weekend deals, so not long left unfortunately. Cheapest I've personally seen this card, been looking at a similar EVGA card for £145 on Amazon. Good for 1080p gaming.
I've just ordered with collect plus, so hopefully will get to pick this up tomorrow.

I’ve got it in my Alienware laptop (got it on a deal before anyone sighs) and it’s dead quiet. Plays pretty much anything quite well with the limited gaming time I get nowadays.

A 1050ti is a 1050ti. There are no mobile graphic chips anymore.

The question asked was whether this specific graphics card is quiet - it is of little relevance that someone's laptop is quiet - some of the 1050ti cards (e.g. Zotac) have noisy fans that have a minimum speed of 40%.

Does this need external power?

It needs a six pin pcie cable from your psu.

That's a pity, I'm looking for a 1050ti that doesn't need external power.

Thought the older cards would of come down a bit more by now? Picked up an rx480 4gig about 6 months ago for £150 delivered with doom but think they're more expensive now?

To expand on why they're so expensive, along with many other cards. There has been a sudden surge in mining cryptocurrency, which uses graphics cards. The recent RX 480 and 580 series proved to be very good for it, so stocks were quickly drained by miners and used cards jumped in price from demand. As such, Nvidia cards were also running out of stock and increasing in price, since the AMD cards were so hard to find.

Why is this getting any heat? £125 for a pathetically weak graphics card? This is not even worth £100. Just buy a used 970 for a bit more, 970's are almost twice as fast.

You numpty you don't even need a graphics card for a 'media centre'. You might as well just run Kabylake integrated graphics

"numpty" was just a part of an insult made up (in my humble opinion) for the insulting person to gratify self indulging supremacy need. Usually a behaviour of teenager mind or a person with (most of the time) hidden insecurities. If there will be a retaliation to my deucated guess with some profanities, insults or deminishing description of my person- I'll rest my case.

Incorrect. If you have a 4k display and want to do upscaling and processing your integrated card will not cut it, not even a kabylake integrated. Have a look at madvr
Also good luck getting [email protected] over your integrated chip that likely doesn't even have HDMI 2.0 but relies on a DP to HDMI converter chip.
So if you want a top of the range media PC then you absolutely need a dedicated GPU like the above.
misa426 to be_vigilant
21 Aug 17#51
This is simply incorrect. Kabylake integrated graphics will display 4K media just fine. DP to HDMI is also capable of 60hz 4K. Someone who is building a "media centre" is actually better off with integrated graphics as they will also run cooler and quieter and consume less power
be_vigilant to misa426
22 Aug 17#55
There was a bug in the converter chip which broke bit stream audio when using it. Its a well know issue. I think it is now fixed on windows but not Linux.
Intel also now claim that HDR is not supported using Apollo lake. So that's a risk too.
Also good luck using madvr on integrated graphics. The 1060 I have in my media centre has passive fans up to 40c so stays silent. Integrated chip fine for your average kodi grandma streamer. Not good for a serious media PC.
misa426 to be_vigilant
22 Aug 17#58
So that was a bug, not a hardware limitation. How many people using a PC as a "media centre" use Linux? About 10 nerds out of all of HUKD maybe? "Average grandma kodi streamer", big exaggeration. Integrated graphics will be absolutely fine for the vast majority of people. I've never even heard of madvr, sounds like some obscure codec but I'll take your word for that one.
Even my mobile phone can render 4K video.
I feel like you are trying to find ways to justify the GTX 1060 when for most that would be absolutely overkill for a media PC

I feel like you are talking like you think you know what you are talking about but clearly dont.
Resolution and bitrate are very different things. Good luck playing a [email protected] 10bit HDR HEVC on your mobile phone.
At the time when I built my new media PC none of the mITX boards had HDMI 2.0. They all used the display port convertor which broke bit streaming audio. No Dolby atmos is a deal breaker. I hear that maybe patched on Windows now but still broken on linux. Plenty of hotukdeals users have a linux media PC. Have you never heard of Libreelec?
If you want to future proof your mediaPC then a GTX card is needed. The GTX 1030 will do but for decent upscaling algorithms you want a 1050 minimum. Have a look at the madvr and you will be impressed. The upscaled 1080p GOT I watched last night was amazing quality.

Alright, you do a survey of the percentage here that use Linux and get back to me.
Sorry but I doubt I'll be impressed with any of that stuff you mentioned. It's not my interest.
I believe that new Sony ZX Premium is marketed as displaying 4K HDR, no?
"Upscaled 1080 GOT" - No "hardcore" media enthusiast with such an obsession on absolutely perfect cutting edge quality as you seem to be suggesting, would be watching "upscaled" in the first place. They'd be watching a native 4K uncompressed blu-ray, surely
"Future proof" is a fool's game in the world of technology - there is no such thing. Everything you mention will become obsolete soon enough

Find me a 4k uncompress GOT and I will gladly watch that. The 1080p is the best quality you will find. So upscaling with madvr is the best option.

Would a 970 be suitable to upgrade a machine with a low wattage PSU? Will it fit in a snug full height mATX case? Can you buy a used 970 with a 100% guarantee it hasn't been abused? Do you realise that not everyone plays games on 1080P ultra settings?

Will this play recent titles in highest settings paired with an i5 7500?
bazleboy to MonkeyMan90
20 Aug 17#17
Depends on the titles, and how many fps you want. 60fps you'll be looking at medium to high for most recent games. Esports games like Overwatch, Dota and others will play on max settings at 1080p. Others like GTA or battlefield would probably drop below 60fps.
MonkeyMan90 to bazleboy
20 Aug 17#18
When you say drop below 60fps will it still be decent quality?
MysticalUndies to MonkeyMan90
20 Aug 17#19
Hugely depends on the game. Some games you'll be lucky to hit 30fps 1080p on high others will easily do 60fps.
1050 Tis are due a small $10-$20 bump in price next week. Nvidia GPU set, IIRC Palit and Asus cards are already up so expect it to filter through to etailers over the next week or two as new stock lands.
If you are going to buy a 1050 Ti in the very near future now is the time to commit.
