Good cheap option for a slave to a high-end speedlite. That's for the pointer.

if i was to use this on my D3200 instead of the built in flash would it improve flash photos say for portraits on its own ?

Yes. For indoor portraits if you angle the unit up and bounce the flash off the ceiling you'll get a much more even natural light with less shadows and loss of colour.

Sorry guys, but why would anyone use this rather than the in-built flash?

To be able to angle the direction of the flash and 'bounce' it off a wall or the ceiling for different effects and to reduce the horrible overexposure you tend to get with a direct forward pointing flash?

More control over exposure, ability to trigger it as a secondary light in slave mode using the built in flash, control over light direction, ability to use with modifiers to create softer light, angling it to bounce of reflective surfaces..... more reasons than I could name really! The only downside (if you choose to see it that way) is that the unit looks to be completely manual meaning that some understanding of the correlation between aperture/iso and flash power would have to be learnt by the user rather than relying on the built in flash's ETTL function.

You, specifically, don't need it if yours has an in-built flash and you have always being happy with it.

Unfortunately, these "compatible" flashes have a nasty habit of not being compatible with the next model. I got bitter by this twice, so take the promise with a grain of salt.
That being said, it is a great price price for a slave flash. But I do wonder whether it works for example with pre-flash exposure metering etc. Especially if you want to include ambient light and use the flash as a fill in, you need to have a way to reduce the flash energy to prevent it from dominating.

Basic but for what it is it's still very cheap.
