LoveFilm is closing down on the 31st October. Those who have an active subscription should check their Inbox/Junk for an Email from Amazon which will give the blurb I have put below & include a discount code to knock £15 off a new Alexa enabled Fire Stick.
I'm aware this only affects certain people but some might not check their junk Email & miss this offer.
Thanks.
Official Amazon statement is below:
LOVEFiLM Update
We have very much enjoyed delivering the LOVEFiLM By Post service to our customers. However, over the last few years we’ve seen a decreasing demand for Blu-ray and DVD rental as customers increasingly move to streaming. Due to this, we will be closing the LOVEFiLM By Post service on 31st October 2017.
Until then, you can continue to rent movies and TV shows on Blu-ray and DVD discs as usual. There is no need to take any action. You will not be billed for your LOVEFiLM subscription after 30th September 2017, and you can continue to enjoy the service until it closes on 31st October 2017.
When you have finished watching any discs you have at home, you can simply return them in LOVEFiLM pre-paid envelopes or, if you find yourself short of return envelopes, you can submit your request for extra return envelopes here. Alternatively, you can return the disc in a standard envelope, addressed to:

Wonder what they'll do with all the discs - sell them on as used? Or, they wouldn't be allowed to as they are 'rental' copies?
chaywa to Crossbow
14 Aug 17#8
They'd find a way to sell them on. When BHS were closing pretty much all of their DVD's for sale were ex-rental. Boomerang etc thrive on the ex-rental market.

Yeah, to a third-party probably, but can't see Amazon selling them directly to the public.

Wasn't aware of them closing down but have thought for a while it was only a matter of time with streaming taking over and DVDs / Blurays getting increasingly cheap to buy anyway. Embracing the new Ultra HD 4K format and renting UHD Bluray might have bought them some more time or they could have gone the other way and just made it cheaper but probably would still have shut maybe just a year or so later.
Kind of sad that there isn't a place for physical media rental by post anymore as it did fill a niche. i enjoyed using the service for a good few years back when it first came out (pre amazon ownership) as at that time even the best connections were too slow for good video streaming and there wasn't any real services out there anyway (even pre-youtube).
Sorry to see them go, wasn't a bad service at all, just can't compete with the convenience factor of streaming...

'decreasing demand for Blu-ray and DVD rental as customers increasingly move to streaming'
Hmmmm.... To me not as clear-cut as this where Amazon / Lovefilm are concerned. As a long term lovefilm customer it looked to me like Amazon were increasingly withholding rental copies of films in order to further their streaming service. The recent version of Ghost in the Shell was a good example. Not yet available to rent on disc from Lovefilm but available to stream, whereas CinemaParadiso have it available to rent on Blu-Ray.
Due to a paucity of new releases I cancelled earlier this month and went elsewhere. As a bonus my new provider rents out 4K Blu-Rays too.
Minlack to creepyg
14 Aug 17#19
So do you use Cinema Paradiso? Will have to switch. But they do have a bunch of film earlier than Lovefilm, which is nice!
creepyg to Minlack
14 Aug 17#23
Yep. Early days but turnaround times etc seem comparable to Lovefilm. Monthly cost will be a bit higher but means i don't need to buy 4K discs unless it's something I really want to own.

15 Aug 17#47
most people dont care.. I know full well how much prettier it looks to watch a 4K BD vs a 4K stream but when i am watching a film or show i dont really care as long as its about 1080p the picture quality is of lesser importance over the quality of story and acting.
bondvillain20 to AndyRoyd
16 Aug 17#56
Totally agree with You, streaming is OK for those with fast/reliable broadband and for casual/everyday users, Physical Discs are by very nature "Different". I already have Amazon and NOW Tv included Free with Utlity/Bills-Contracts, but use NEITHER!? I will Always buy and rent discs, the Picture and Sound Quality are far superior, guess it's similar to asking a Vinyl Record Collector with a Top-End Hi-Fi would they consider Spotify/Deezer etc? For some "disposable" content to listen "on the fly" then probably Yes, but for anything else it may be Vinyl or CD... Arguably it may also be a "Generational Thing"....??
Crossbow to refaey
14 Aug 17#25
Why not? Most people with basic broadband (which may be download-limited), slow internet connections & older folk probably prefer it, plus streaming sound quality won't be as good as Blu-Ray discs in most cases.

14 Aug 17#28
Anyone have an alternative other than cinema paradismo ? I had a trial with them a while back and they were appalling (first discs took 10 days !) Might have just been unlucky though.
Streaming just isn't a satisfactory alternative. Firstly 10 quid for as many dvds as you can watch in a month is much better value that 1 streamed film for 4 quid. Secondly you can watch at your leisure, watch half the film and the second half a few days lately if you get interrupted with other stuff - while streaming you have to watch within 48 hours. Thirdly you always good get a good experience with a dvd in terms of picture and sound. Streaming you can get buffering depending on where you live and what your ISP is like and often the sound is much quieter/poorer than a dvd. This is terrible news for a Monday morning !!

Even worse is the lack of info. I try and rent Hidden Fences on Amazon. Capped at 720p for some reason. Rent and old Disney animation and it could be cropped or whatever. Also only providing download for off-line viewing on mobile devices. Used to have that on PS3 until earlier this year. Now it's all variable bit-rate, micro-stutter and buffering. Ugh.

I don't know why you're all asking for 'spare' codes when it clearly says: During the Promotional Period Qualifying Customers can use the Promo Code to redeem the Offer against an order of a Fire TV Stick sold by Amazon EU Sarl via amazon.co.uk using the same customer account to which the email was sent and The Offer is non-transferable and may not be resold.
So.. unless you're going to be using the email address the code was sent to.. you're not going to be able to use a 'spare' code!

Possibly because the OP indicated: "I have put below & include a discount code to knock £15 off a new Alexa enabled Fire Stick". So people like me, we're under the assumption that it was possible... Obviously, we should have read the T&C in more details. Therefore, this post is only for Lovefilm subscribers... :muscle:  Heat added.

From the T&Cs in the main post: "The offer of a £15 discount on an All New Fire TV Stick..."
As the offer is open until 31st October 2017, it may be worth waiting for it to decrease in price before buying. On the other hand, the offer could end before that - also from the T&Cs: "This Offer is subject to availability and Amazon reserves the right to cancel or modify the Offer at any time."

ps. Does anyone know if Streaming supports newer sound formats such as DTS-X or Dolby ATMOS..?? On a similar subject I bought a certain new Blu Ray from Amazon for £7.99, it wasn't specifically "Limited Edition" or marketed as such, however it did have an Improved New Audio Format, it went out of print and consequently I sold it on E*ay for £60... Gutted Lovefilm is going as I've been with them (via ScreenSelect & Qflicks) since 2003. Must have rented 2000+ discs from them over the years. They went downhill as soon as Amazon took over though, bullying users into using streaming rather than discs, separating the games library from films, raising the prices, having a worse user interface, etc...
I'll hang onto my code for a Firestick in the hope that they'll have a price drop/offer on the RRP before the 31st Oct and I'll maybe pick it up for sub £24.99. 10 weeks to clear my rental list...!
