The delivery times on this just keep going up and up, went from 15th August to the 25th and now it's We are expecting this item on: Wednesday, 30th August. lol

I think somebody somewhere along the chain has changed their mind price wise. lol

I agree entirely.

People have truly bizarre perceptions with regards to what costs a lot.

In my experience it basically boils down to: anything they can break down into many, small-ish payments over a period of time (fags, booze, expensive coffee, nights out, phone contracts etc) are cheap, whereas anything with a one off large-ish payment (for example, a £750 GPU, buying a £500+ phone outright and having a SIM Only contract etc) is automatically expensive.

Honestly, there's absolutely no wonder so many people manage to get themselves into serious debt without actually buying anything significant.

To a normal person (the average income in the UK being somewhere around £27k), a £200-300 GPU every two years, which you can of course sell when you're done with it, should be a drop in the ocean. You're talking a cost of 20-something Pence per day, you hardly need to be Bill Gates to afford that! :joy:

i get asked stupid questions about how much i spend on fuel. i drive a bmw 3 litre (petrol obviously) 2 seater convertible. i say i spend £30 a week more than a diesel mini. they go that is a lot then. i respond with well tell me what else i can buy for £30 a week that gives me as much enjoyment if i were to get rid of it and buy a diesel mini? people spend £100 a week on fags for instance, therefore £30 a week to drive a car that makes you feel amazing compared to car that makes you feel like a lemming IMO is nothing. it's all relative. for instance he is saying to a normal person £200-£300 is a lot for a GPU, well the average person spends £600+ on a iphone (over their contract).
matt101101
17 Aug 17 #78
Even £750 isn't too bad if your mate keeps it for ~2 years until the next x80Ti card is released. You're talking Pence per day when you average out your total spend over a couple of years (assuming he sells the 1080Ti when he's done with it).

Say a total loss of £500 over two years, that works out to about 70p per day. How much is a coffee at Costa/Starbucks, 3 quid-ish? I wonder how many people happily spend that day in, day out without a second thought...
PsychoSonny
17 Aug 17 #77
Lolwut?

What does this even mean?

A mate at work just forked out £750 on one of the top end 1080ti's. Now that's overkill however £200 is nothing in the past it would have gotten you a mid range card and it's the same today.

The suggestion is Nvida restocked 1080 GPU to time with AMD launch. Hence the price drops. We could see something similar happen to the 1070 cards in next 1-2 weeks. If AMD start to eat up a lot of the high end cards then it gets more interesting.
Nate1492
14 Aug 17 #74
It's actually Crypto Currency that has spiked the prices, historically pricing of GFX cards has maintained a nearly steady number when pegged against inflation.

BINGO!

If my 970 died i would not give either AMD or Nivida any cash, i would grab a second hand 970 because no way i am playing their little game, as they sit their loving these inflatted prices while pretending to be sympathetic that gamers are having to deal with said high prices....they can suck a egg, a massive overinflatted rotton one. lol

I managed to find some early benchmarks of the Vega 64. I'm in Spain so it's in Spanish but you don't need to be able to read Spanish to see the power consumption and the fps numbers of the Vega 64 are not so good. Shame there isn't any details on the Vega 56.

The VEGA 56 is meant to compete with the 1070. To go above that you'd need the VEGA 64. There is also a £459 Gigabyte 1080 on Amazon at the moment, which is the lowest price I have ever seen it.
southernorth
13 Aug 17 #68
I mean, I really do wish you are right if I'm honest. I just don't see it happening. Like when Brexit happened, the £/$ rate plummeted, and all PC component retailers raised their prices (as they mostly buy stock in $). Yet when the exchange rates started returning to normal, prices did not improve. Which is perfectly fine, they exist to profit, but its just annoying.

Is freesync anything like as good as gsync? Seems to be thrown in to a lot of monitors these days.

I've got gsync now so I'm tied into the green team... Seems a shame manufacturers can't include both technologies in the same monitor tbh

Cheapest 1070 i can find in the US at the moment is $429. That seems to put the vega 56 a good prospect at $399 (if you can get one).
southernorth
13 Aug 17 #60
Is there some sort of forefit for making such a ludicrous statement that all 1070's will drop to 299 within 2 weeks?
Mark727
13 Aug 17 #59
I never said it wouldn't sell out, I've no doubt it will. People with freesync monitors, and possible minors will buy Vega. Plus Amd has far less stock than say Nvidia. And Vega 56 won't beat they 1070 by that much otherwise it would be getting close to the 1080 which is Vega 64 territory.
davem
13 Aug 17 #58
When Vega sells out (and it will) will you come back and admit you were wrong? It might sell a lot more cards to crypto miners than gamers but AMD's bottom line will only grow.

At the end of the day if Vega 56 beats the 1070 by a good enough margin it will sell if the street price is competitive.
madmarman
13 Aug 17 #57
A sad but very true story :disappointed:

13 Aug 17 #56
You are correct I quoted another reputable site without researching it .The card is in shops tomorrow though. And prices for the 1070 will drop to 299 in the next two weeks .
vulcanproject
13 Aug 17 #55
When you realise that Vega 64 has a die size of ~480mm squared and the GTX1080 is just 314mm squared. Vega 56 and GTX1070 are binned versions of those dies. The performance gap between these models is apparently not very big. That means Nvidia is ridiculously more power efficient and cooler, massively cheaper to manufacture and so forth.

AMD have been whomped really, but at least there is competition at the high end for the 6 months before Nvidia launch Volta. Then we'll be back to where we were.
Gixxerman001
13 Aug 17 #54
Naah, no need to go mad now, last Sept I bought my MSI 1070 for £329 from eBuyer (with Quidco coming off that price too),in the new i5-6600k PC it handles just about everything turned right up now, will do for some time to come & I expect it to last years.
Just like the GTX480 (bought Feb 2011 for £122!.....inflation, eh) I had before it did (& continues to do sterling service in the old Q6700 PC which is still going strong but relegated to mainly network duties elsewhere in the house).
6yrs, seems about right....wonder what the next one'll be like in 2023/4 lol

I'd be surprised if performance per watt is much of an improvement, AMDs Achilles's heel.

13 Aug 17 #52
The msrp of a GTX 1070 in the US is $350 and the confirmed msrp of the Vega 56 is $399. Now I'm no maths genius but this doesn't seem to be a cheaper msrp??
keloid
13 Aug 17 #51
it seems you can't actually pre-order this item? if you click the pre-order button, that does nothing?
MysticalUndies
13 Aug 17 #50
I agree. With a $399 rrp on the lowest model, numerous sources saying that they imagine a higher launch price and combining that with the weak pound, I can't see this launching lower than 400.
Mark727
13 Aug 17 #49
Best we can hope for is 400 and 500 for the UK pricing
Mark727
13 Aug 17 #48
No you cannot by 56 tomorrow its 2 weeks later
madmarman
13 Aug 17 #47
Well although its not for sale yet , you are quite right . But seeing as AMD have revealed the rrp in advance then yes it dose have a lower rrp right now (although not for sale yet ). Which brings me back to my original OP, Today this thread is hot maybe not tomorrow and IMO definitely not hot within two weeks .Price drops are immanent.
Edit and you can Buy the vega from tomorrow .
Mark727
13 Aug 17 #46
Vega does not have a lower RRP at this point in time. All I'm saying is this card is 330 and even Vega 56 which comes out 28th will not even be close to this price yet uses more electric and runs hotter. The only advantage of Vega is freesync. If you don't have that then you're mad to get Vega over a 1070
madmarman
13 Aug 17 #45
Vega 56 has a lower rrp is not a year late ,AMD has took a year to catch up .Its definitely hotter and more power hungry but so what not by so much of a margin it will make any difference we are talking top tear,3rd party cards will come out very soon and will run cooler if that floats your boat .

Point anyone is making in this thread when bringing in the vega is wait till tomorrow till you deside if this is a hot deal or not .
madmarman
13 Aug 17 #44
It states cheaper rrp did you read it
MysticalUndies
13 Aug 17 #43
That confirms nothing. Those are the US prices and it states nothing about benchmark results. Does anyone have a confirmed price for the UK?
Mark727
13 Aug 17 #42
Get off your high horse. Vega 64 has been shown from reputable leaked benchmarks to be almost the same as the FE. vega 64 is up against the 1080 and the 56 is going up against the 1070. Why? Because that's the performance they offer. Now Vega 56 is just a scaled down version of the 64 and calculations from the FE in combination with leaked benchmarks and amd prioritizing the Vega 56 reviews over the 64 basically shows 56 Being slightly faster than a 1070. Vega is a pure disappointment (more expensive, a year late, hotter and uses more power than nvidia).
madmarman
13 Aug 17 #35
vaga is faster and the same money so prices will drop £299, will be the normal price .come back to this quote in 2 weeks or less
MysticalUndies to madmarman
13 Aug 17 #36
How do you know how much vega is or if it's faster? There are only rumours and leaked very biased benchmarks so far. Tomorrow all will become clear. Until then you can't make statements like this without concrete evidence.
madmarman to MysticalUndies
13 Aug 17 #40
Becaue its been confirmed by two very reptuable sites that have the cards right now ready to release the revews tomorow
madmarman to MysticalUndies
13 Aug 17 #41
Here is a snipit from one site :-

Initially, it seemed like AMD might only send out the Vega 64 for review, but at the last minute we received word that Vega 56 would be coming as well. AMD asked us to prioritize the Vega 56 benchmarks and testing, since it feels that will be the more interesting of the two products for most gamers. And why shouldn't it be? $399 compared to $499 makes it more affordable and puts it below the current retail prices on the GTX 1070 competition. But will it be faster? That's the question. Don't worry, though—we've already tested the RX Vega 64, and RX Vega 56 benchmarking is in progress.
Mark727 to madmarman
13 Aug 17 #38
While it's true Vega 56 will be slightly faster than a 1070 it is also more expensive, runs much hotter and uses far far more power. People think this mining craze will stop overnight, well it won't. People can just move to another coin. Gpu prices will not go back to normal anytime soon
davem to Mark727
13 Aug 17 #39
Surely that's breaking NDA from the tests you've run on your review sample?

No? then stop miss informing people when you don't have any legit info to back it up.

BigPro to Mark727
13 Aug 17 #31
£250 sounds about right for the 1070. The 1060 should be around £130-150. Graphics cards are extremely over inflated right now. This lame mining thing (which is aiding criminals such as hackers and perverts) has got to end.
Mark727 to BigPro
13 Aug 17 #32
It's true the prices are mad, but even before the mining craze prices were nowhere near that low. And they honestly never ever will, I mean sure, a few deals will come along every now and then but stable prices will stay well over 300 and 200 for the 1070 and 1060 for there entire lifespan
BigPro to Mark727
13 Aug 17 #33
I just don't see how any normal person in 2017 can afford to fork out over £200 or even £300 for a graphics card.
jaydeeuk1 to BigPro
13 Aug 17 #34
Depends what you mean by normal person. If you have £1000 or so disposable income after mortgage, bills and topping up savings then £200 isn't bad. If you upgrade every 2 years that's 30p a day to save plus whatever you can sell your old card for. If you can't find 30p a day then you have much bigger financial problems
Graham1979 to jaydeeuk1
12 Aug 17 #17
Said the same about a Ferrari, just another £150,000 to drop and I'll got for it.
CoumbBarr2000
13 Aug 17 #29
This is only a good price in the current climate of vastly overpriced videocard market.

But think about it - the 1070 is basically a 980 Ti but much more efficient. Yes at stock it's faster but once you overclock a 980 Ti (which has more headroom and scales better with OC) they are basically the same in terms of performance.

For a proper upgrade or level of perf, a 1080 would be the card to get if it werent for their ridiculous prices. But Vega is coming in a couple days too and I'm eyeing the Vega 56.

This GPU will be more than enough for 1440p gaming as well. Honestly I wouldn't recommend anyone to spend more than this on a GPU, unless they are an enthusiast in which case they can go ahead and ignore me
