That there's any sense of order to the collection is a testament to the volunteers who have catalogued images posted to Flickr by the library's Mechanical Curator – a bot that randomly picks and posts images from the all of the books the library has digitised since 2013.
Both photos and illustrations are included, though unfortunately many of their creators aren't credited – merely the authors of the books they appear in.

"You know, I don't wanna sound like a queer or nothin', but I think you've got a really nice ass!"
For those wondering what the hell I am talking about, look for the movie Orgazmo.

If this guy was still alive, no doubt he'd be buying lots of gadgets and carp from hukd! We all need that Wilko's sun lounger with ipod stand and action camera mounted on gorillapod resting on table from Argos :joy:

from title: "No copyright free"
I think you meant either "No copyright fee", or maybe "Copyright free". But somehow the two got muddled.

How to search within a particular album?
Searching for a picture results in hits for the whole of Flickr, not just for the British Library.

If you click on a particular picture (eg childrens books) then click on a picture you like (from a book) underneath the picture are options to download the whole book as a pdf, or see all the illustrations from the book and other options. The pdfs are quite good quailty but you can also order a high quality copy (but not free)
Opening post
Then check out the British Library's collection of over a million copyright-free images that essentially you can do whatever you like with.
The British Library's collection of images on Flickr are taken from books it has its collection from the 17th, 18th and 19th Century – so well out of copyright – and are vaguely arranged by theme: such as book covers, cycling, illustrated lettering, comic art, ships or children's book illustration. There's also a collection of 'Highlights' that's a good place to start if you just want a general browse.
That there's any sense of order to the collection is a testament to the volunteers who have catalogued images posted to Flickr by the library's Mechanical Curator – a bot that randomly picks and posts images from the all of the books the library has digitised since 2013.
