For any of you lucky to be a student or have a student card with NUS (and I'm sure many of you are now students going off the previous NUS deal) then you can get individual YHA Membership for £2.50 a year. The code you need you can find by logging into the NUS site like you would finding any of your other NUS discounts.
I've stayed in lots of YHAs over the years both in the UK and abroad (you can use this card in any YHA, such as Scotland, NZ, Australia, Europe etc). As a member you get £3 off a room per night (and any under 18s get £1.50 off a night included when they stay with you). Any other adult staying will need a card too to get the £3 a night discount.
I have tended to move away from YHA in favour of Airbnb now but if you are a hiker I find the location of the hostels in many places are brilliant. Wasdale for Scarfell Pike is stunning, as is Snowden (and saves on parking costs). I've just booked Glen Nevis in Scotland too, which is in a brilliant location right at the start of the trail to Ben Nevis.
For £2.50 it is worth it as you also get a range of other discounts with your YHA card too.

Hi, I was delighted to see this post on my google news feed. It is 30 years since I was last a member of YHA. However, being a confused mature student I thought that the article author had also taken up the offer, being of mature years like myself.
I rushed to the NUS site to grab the discount code, but unfortunately (a) One has to be under 26 years of age and (b) pay by a method other than Direct Debit.

No you don't need to be under a certain age. I'm 36 and logged onto the account on NUS Extra. There are two codes one for adults and one for under 26. Use the one for adults. On YHA click to pay annually not direct debit and enter the code at checkout. The price will reduce to £2.50 and you will be able to pay on PayPal.

This is excellent advice rachelandgromit - as I cocked it up by attempting to do it via direct debit !!!!

My apologies, I was trying to use the NUS Extra Android App. The cut and paste function for the discount code is broken. The code on the NUS Extra website works fine, thanks.
