Got the Andrew James one from amazon for £19. My sister has this one, personally I do see much difference. Great buy

It might be cheap but it will still take up cupboard space, and ice cream makers are one of the least used kitchen gadgets !

Well yes and no. Mostly no.
The freezing is done by means of a block that you have to put in the freezer overnight (same principle as the ice blocks that you use in a coolbag).
There are various basic recipes but they nearly all involve heating the mixture*, so you need to let it cool before you put it into the ice cream maker- otherwise, it will melt the inside of the cool block before it can freeze (*for sorbets, you usually start with a sugar syrup by heating sugar and water; ice cream usually involves making a custard by heating milk or cream with egg or egg yolk.)
Don't get me wrong, this looks like a good deal. I have a similar machine and the home made ice cream is delicious, although it's such a faff that I don't make it very often. And takes much more than 15-20 minutes.
So... save yourself £16.99 and don't buy this at all. Or spend £200+ on a machine that includes a powered chiller unit.
