Or perhaps in a decade or so I'll start to think otherwise, and instead insulate myself into the comforts, and among the richer passengers. Money better spent saving towards Bose quiet and comfort headphone for now I think.

Yes, you can buy child tickets for 1st. Mine were under 5 the last time I took them but I bought them child tickets anyway to make sure they got a seat.

Just my experience but I tried to book tickets for a trip to London in September. The cheapest I could find for my times was £66 one way and £103 on return. Out of interest I looked for the cheapest on Trainline. For the same times of travel I got £44 each way!! So unless you find the £20 fares it may be worthwhile double checking elsewhere.

Being younger has nothing to do with it. If you can afford QC35s, surely First Class isn't that big a deal..

:sunglasses: What I meant was perhaps the money could be saved towards other things more generally. Given other spending priorities, I wouldn't necessarily buy a QC35 for the same reason I would benefit little from getting the first class - e.g. (cheap pair of inear gives more convenience and is less likely to be lost). Money could be better spent elsewhere.
That said - spread the QC35 £329 over 2 years (assume you get it from John Lewis for 2 years warranty) - it's just 45p per day - for a frequent traveler it could make sense; then again the same logic can be applied to many things - which whilst not individually expensive - quickly adds up when you buy them. Then again the train cost in this country (even with my expiring rail card) .... is ... well. :confused:

I travelled First Class from Newcastle to Edinburgh last December and the poor attendants were off their feet. 2 of them trying to service the ENTIRE train (apparently)!! So as we were 10 minutes from Edinburgh, without having food or drink, the burly Team Leader literally pushed one of the attendants out the way, spilled stuff from the trolley on a (too polite) customer, then proceeded to tell the attendants, loudly, that they were too slow. Then, he took DIRTY glasses, put his fingers fully inside to position it, and poured in a few drops of apple juice. When I told him that I would like a clean glass that hadn't had his fingers in it, he slammed down one of the many clean glasses from the crate and gave me the carton saying "You pour it then Sir if you know how to do that" The attendants were mortified!
Needless to say we complained and Virgin were 'kind' enough to give us a £10 voucher for our next journey, with no apology. Remember, this was First Class!

I found 2 well timed trains M-F during the second week of Edinburgh festival @ 38.50 using a rail card, so well pleased.
Remember, full catering not available on weekend services.

Did 1st Class last week Manchester - London. Abysmal service. Lounge was shut in Manchester, train hadn't been cleaned, two toilets working on the whole train and it stank of ****. Food going down was a banana and a cup of tea in a plastic cup.

Similar has happened to in the past on Virgin West Coast (minus bananas and plastic cups).
I complained. I got rail vouchers for the amount I spent (wasn't going to quibble about this given how often I use trains), plus a free return first class journey anywhere on the network.
