Weird - only a 3 month warranty from the manufacturer. (yes 12 months under sales of good but strange)

if not on your on wifi then yes, your assumption is correct afaik; thus if tp link go bust or stop supporting these and I assume their corresponding servers then they too will stop working on 3g/4g connections.. that said though tp link are a big brand now and i doubt that will happen

They also have the advantage of being less bulky and they allow access to the plug switch.
The big bonus for me is that they have a usb socket on the side, so I can power my alexa dot from it.
I use two plugs for my two lounge lamps
"alexa lounge on" will now turn on and off the lamps.
(alexa lets you create groups so that you can turn on and off multiple sockets at once)

The apps for wasserstein and tplink are both easy to setup and use
Both allow you to turn the plug on and off via your smart phone
both allow you to set up timers on the plug sockets.
The TPlink has an "away mode" so if you are on holiday, you can click this and it will disable the timers. (Wasserstein does not have this feature but personally, I will be using it for lights and will be wanting lights to turn on at night while I am on holiday as a security measure)

Note that this doesn't natively support IFTTT

I have a pair of these bought in Costco for about £41. Have a look for a YouTuber called Techmoan. He's done a good review. . They can be controlled by a Google Home or Amazon Echo or via the smartphone app. The main selling point over some other smart home devices is that they don't need any extra equipment other than a working wifi connection.

Nope, use your phone over whatever web connection you're on.

The app has all sorts of options, timers, schedules, random between certain hours, etc.

I have two at the moment that I use both with Alexa when at home or via the app when not, no issues and really easy to set up.

I think he's asking if he'd need to VPN into his home network to control them.

No the plug logs into a central server, and you access via that server.

Good price, but I still can't help thinking these should be more like £10 before I start to get a few.
