Who's your source?! genuinely interested. They might do 5-6 million worldwide (imo) a third will probably be the less flattering US snes units and prob another third will be the jap version with different games so that's not a whole lot left for the rest to fight over. Although saying that they are region free so to speak, so you could grab a US one and it would play the same.

The SNES Mini only has access to a tiny number of SNES games (maybe 23?). With an emulator you a)don't need extra kit in your house, b)can play all previous SNES games.

But the appeal of these mini consoles is the console itself, to me anyway. I have emulators on my pc but would rather hook up a mini console to my tv anyday.

I don't disagree with you on principle. Just saying a zero won't cut it. You'll need a 3 for SNES and up.

theverge.com/201…les

"In a comment to The Verge (and first reported by Kotaku), a Nintendo representative confirmed that the company will ship “significantly more” Super NES Classic Editions than the notoriously limited run of the NES Classic Edition. However, there’s a catch.

According to the statement, Nintendo will ship Super NES Classic Editions from the hardware launch on September 29th to the end of 2017. “At the this time,” the statement continues, “we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.”

significantly more is not more then double, so I don't see it being more then 4.6 million.

Nintendo can't even make 12 million Switch units that fast, its crazy to think they can make that many with the Snes Mini.

Also still in stock in my postcode.

RiKx
10 Jul 17 #16
Look you don't get it, and that's fine. Why go to a post about it then just to moan at people who do want it? You think you're saving anyone? You think anybody looking at this thread went "I had no idea you could play old games emulated on another system! Thank God for that chap he just saved me $80!"

You can play snes games emulated on a smart phone. I'll telegraph it as you don't seem to understand. Its not just about playing the games its the physical product, its the Nintendo badge, its the controller, the packaging, the nostalgia and a hundred other differing reasons which are personal to people. Just because you don't understand somethings appeal doesn't make those who do foolish, just different to you. Embrace don't hate the difference

For the folks commenting that you can just emulate...
1) A pi, SD card and PSU is what... £20-30?
2) The controllers you can get for a fiver or so are utter **** compared to the original controllers, but still - let's call it a tenner for controllers.
3) You're going to be thieving the software off the internet. Despite the availability of every ROM known to man on the internet...it's still being on the rob.

For the sake of an extra 30 quid on the price of thieving it you get quite a nice little thing that'll retain its value, several fantastic games -and- high quality controllers. *edit* repetition heh

You are completely wrong of course. Not everyone in the world is on HUKD. These were selling on ebay for £160 -£180 only few days ago. Smart traders will not have left alone. There will be many people near Christmas paying well over the odds for these.
I have a question - why not re-release one you can also put games in?
\x0d\x0aCant sell many vc games that way, and as Nintendo aren't producing snes carts anymore they wont make any money from it. That's about it.

Kyouken
10 Jul 17 #27
I haven't ordered one but having official and therefore probably good quality controllers is what sells it for me over making a repro pi.

How good are the controllers you can get for the pi?

Are the Bluetooth ones any good and can you connect 4 up simultaneously for 4 player bomberman?
OllieSt
10 Jul 17 #28
I never claimed everyone in the world is on HUKD. My point was that when a site like HUKD has people buying to turn a profit it's not going to happen. Those eBay orders slip through the system as eBay are pulling them, and quite rightly so.

Time will tell what happens at Xmas, but to my mind if me or you could seemingly quite easily purchase 6 of these things then so can every Tom, Dick or Harry.

Loads of surplus to requirement stock Oct - Dec and no idea of stock levels during that timeframe from 'proper sources'.

I'm not a gambling man, but if I was, this would not be something I would back. As I said, time will tell.

This should appeal to some

I'd also add that by buying this you are showing support for this type of product that enables you to play old games in a reasonable fashion. It would also highlight to Sega/SNK/Atari/Etc that it is viable to deliver sucha product - as long as the quality is there. Apart from a few minor complaints around the NES Mini - such as short leads, imperfect sound - it was a polished product. The UI appeared to be very user friendly. Just look at the knock-off NES Mini that you can import on ebay and see how Nintendo could have done it but chose to deliver a reasonable quality product.
It is one area that Sega is not doing - contra to their old motto of "Sega does what Nintendon't" - they have sublicensed their Mega Drive/Genesis emulated console to AT Games and the quality is not good. They have announced a new version for September this year which would hopefully put it at a similar level of quality to Nintendo's offering.
If you can source a Sega Genesis USB Hub, you can make a Raspberry Pi powered Sega emulator that looks excellent. However, there is the legal issue of where to get the ROMs from to play on it. If you want to see it, take a look here - youtube.com/wat…1S8.

Indeed, however the person I was replying to had just spent £1,399.80 on 20 Snes Mini's so probably isn't that far off a Bitcoin.

Long term I think Bitcoin might be a pretty good investment, certainly something i wish i got on board with when coins were worth a lot less.

A Nintendo 2DS does not run plenty of SNES games. You're probably thinking of the much more expensive New 3DS. And then you actually have to buy the games.

Personally I just can't be bothered trying to work out how to emulate, and as the mini-SNES has every game on it already that I remember from my chilhood, not to mention the controllers, for me it's by far the cheapest option.

Pre ordered from 3 different places now just to make sure i get one. if this one comes in then i'll keep this and sell to friends and family the more expensive ones. wouldn't mind keeping one in its box just to have but would feel bad for the people that didn't have one for it to be just sat on my shelf.

i think a lot more will be coming into stock over the next few weeks/months and people that have bought loads to make a profit will just end up returning them. so dont panic to much people and play it safe and pre order from a few places if you can just to be safe, if you end up with 5 just return them or sell at cost to friends.

I also don't really get the hype. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for nostalgia, but I'm sure you would feel the same nostalgia if you just used a emulator and played the games you used to play.... Saves a fair chunk of money too... And this is hotukdeals... This is the base price and it's a hot deal? Okay then...

I can genuinely see most people playing this for a few hours, realising how frustrating those times were for gaming in general and then trying to sell it off because they realised it really wasn't worth the money when we live in 2017 and emulators exist.

And to the people who sprout "it's illegal" ... There's literally 100,000s if not millions of people who use emulators you really think the police have the manpower/time/money to find and stop all this? That's why pirating will never be stopped because all they can do is ask ISP to block certain websites which is easily worked around by using a proxy.

Cmon guys... I understand it's nostalgic but atleast wait until they all turn up on eBay and save a fair amount of money off the base price.

evilmingdoctor
10 Jul 17 #110
it depends whether it is eventually hacked like the NES was - (which voids warranty btw) - on release the console will come preloaded with the 21 games listed

if/when it is hacked you'll be able to put any game ROMS on there - but from purchase - you'll be stuck with the 21 already very good games on there

I think it's 50HZ as it's a PAL console (though not 100% on that one)

Retropie on the RPI3 is better then this. Dozens of emulators and plays all snes game and you can buy a mini snes case for it and snes bluetooth controllers.
super_leeds_86
10 Jul 17 #117
Could argue that picking up an old android phone from CEX for £70 provides more value than one of these as ROMS can be loaded with emulators and the phone also includes a screen so is technically cheaper than people quoting Raspberry Pi's hooked up to TV's.... BUT that's missing the point of this bit of nostalgia and not everything in life is a race to the bottom.

This comes branded, miniaturized and styled to the original and some reasonable element of future resale, £69.99 for that isn't exactly expensive.

Why are people buying multiples of these. Nintendo said they have fixed the supply issue that made them no longer able to sell the NES mini on the SNES. So watch your eBay listings go for sub £50.

Also just buy a raspberry pi 3 and buy a 3D printed nes case off eBay. Then you can play whatever retro game you want.

Not much money! Certainly nothing close to £10 given the amount of time, it might help them in terms of cash flow and payment terms with Nintendo but if it helps me get this £10 less than everywhere else I don't really mind what effect it has on their accounts and P/L.

If it was sitting in my account for the next two months it would earn me next nothing in interest, so by letting it sit with them to secure a product I want to buy I am basically generating £10 over two months, which I am happy with!

I know what you mean, a cartridge slot would have been an incredible addition but for me personally it has the games I used to play regularly so I am OK with it. The only other ones I would have liked would have been Bomber Man, Pilot Wings and maybe Super Soccer or ISS but I can live without them.

But the SNES mini is just an emulator. How do I know? Can it read physical/actual SNES cartridges? No. So how is it reading the games. Oh that's right, digitally. Emulation.

Better options:

A nintendo 2DS which can run plenty of SNES games + DS games + 3DS games = £79.99
Online emulators which actually enhances the games by removing the hideous ghosting and inaccurate colours = No lag. Unless your computer/laptop is 20 years old.

10 Jul 17 #176
Perhaps not. I have a Super Nintendo and it doesn't really feel right on an LCD. I think it's input lag which happens because on my cheap TV the analogue signal has to be converted to digital and that introduces lag. You can buy a separate converter which does the job but these Mini-Super Nintendos are designed to work on HDTVs for a price that's about the same as buying a converter box.

People seem to forget how much the original Snes and games cost these days, you'd be looking twice as much for a console with the same games. Cost aside, there is also no HDMI cable output and they run at 50hz.
Those suggesting a Pi and ROM's seem to be forgetting the lag you get on those. You'll also need to pads, ones as good as the official will set you back £20 each at best. Want it to look like a snes and not an ugly box? Another £25 for a case. All of this also assumes your happy setting up a Pi and Illegally (and believe it or not, difficultly for some) downloading ROM's.
The Snes mini will be the best way to play Snes games on a modern T.V. and for £69 its not bad value.

60hz versions of games on the eu unit. Output isn't really relevant i dont think re pal/ntsc in the mini's case.

A potential problem with the hacking/modding is how much space nintendo have left on board after adding the 21 games. The snes library is obviously a little larger than the nes one and so all games might not fit onto the remaining memory.
James_cleeve73
10 Jul 17 #195
I'm not missing the point I have the point framed exactly! It's a very expensive way to play 21 odd SNES games. REALLY expensive. They could have at least implemented a way to add more games, maybe nintendo licensed rom images you could upload? As it stands if you're not a tech luddite then it's a no brainer to just go the raspberry pi route. Even buy a couple of snes controllers off ebay and a USB adapter if you want the real authentic experience....

I had a SNES in the 90s... The SNES Mini is, at the end of the day, just an emulator. So you can either give an extortionate amount of money to Nintendo to play a tiny subset of its games, or you can use an emulator on your PC/laptop and play the whole back catalogue, without needing extra kit in your house.

I did give similar a go once, bought the Sony 22" Playstation 2 TV - anyone seen or got one of those? I still have it along with a bunch of games, two official pads and memory card. Cool product in principle but only ever played it once, during which I tried half a dozen games, realised 'the moment' had passed and went back to the PS4. Anyone got the NES Mini - has it had much use?

I couldnt get a NES Mini for a reasonable price, managed to pick one of these up.. but..

Myself and my kids plays lots and I mean lots of retro gaming, I bought this not to play on but as a collectors thing, but If I didnt already have a SNES and all the games for it I wanted i would most deffo buy one of these to game on.

Its not for everyone, but I am not sure why so many feel the need to attack those buying one, because they have a differing opinion on it.

£90 for COD X)

They're still pumping out that garbage?

Nintendo has only said they are making 'significantly more' units this time around. What figure that actually translates to is anyone's guess but I'd imagine it's closer to 2x than anything else.

This is nothing new. Just Nintendo doing a classic Nintendo.
It shows how out of touch the people making the decisions are (Nintendo Japan).

Offered by complete savings? Yes, it's legit but again, cashback is not guaranteed and reviews show reliability varies. They have a monthly charge of £15 (free for the first month and can be cancelled at the end of your first month). I joined after a purchase last month and managed to get around £60 off various purchases. Funnily enough, they gave me the £15 welcome bonus for my initial purchase, but also gave me the monthly £15 bonus for the same transaction. When they missed a purchase, I put in a claim and was sorted within a couple of days. I'd say try it out, at least get the initial £15/£30 and cancel if you're not keen.

Why do people keep claiming this rubbish? It's not true. Go have a look at the eBay listings and price up what you've just claimed. I trade and refurbish vintage consoles so know the prices of the SNES consoles. Decent games are a tenner each, more depending on popularity. A decent condition console with two official pads, you're looking at nearly £70 just for that.

No one will be making a penny on these. In fact scalpers will be canceling or selling at pretty much cost on eBay with all the grief that can bring. When a website like HUKD has a number of posters buying beyond their own personal requirement, smart traders will have left well alone. Only a very few people actually make decent money out of these kind of scenarios, and those that do quietly buy and sell without a fanfare.

pompey77 to StevenBrown
10 Jul 17 #46
£5 for a pii, I guess that comes in a nice case with two official SNES controllers then? StevenBrown to pompey77

no controllers are around £5 each, the snes case £5 and another £5 for the memory card so around £25 - £30 total I would imagine.

10 Jul 17 #111
I am an avid gamer and have a pi with all the SNES, Megadrive, Neo Geo, and arcade ROMs you can imagine, but that's not the same as having an official device released by a games manufacturer that celebrates a console in all its glory.

A pi is great for self building and cross platform fun, but these mini classics are a thing to be celebrated. They encapsulate an era when we were kids, that we now can only daydream about. The late 80s and 90s were simply amazing for computer games.
paulpso
10 Jul 17 #280
£70 would get you a genuine snes in good nick with a bunch of games. Isn't that better than a small imitation snes that's just an emulator and can't play actual snes cartridges? That would give you the proper nostalgia.

My comment wasn't about the morality of piracy.

It was about the logic of comparing the value of this to a RPi with 'free' games. On a deal site we can't use this type of logic because then every deal would be voted cold. That 4K TV for £500? Cold because I can nick it for free.

We have to use fair comparisons.

I wasnt saying you i was referring to the previous comments, but £70 is £70 its more to some than others..

You can look at it like this.. the recent Battlefront top tier package was £119.99 on launch, its now been on here for £10, I consider that throwing money away and I consider the SNES Mini an investment..

We all have different priorities and what you consider expensive at £70 I might consider a bargain, that does not mean to say I do not understand the value of things.

Good score!

You'll probably find Turrican in the Amiga screenshot quiz‌ :sunglasses:

Holding out for a Switch mini. Also I've heard N64 pre-pre-orders have sold out.

So if I wondered into your GOG.com Strategy Sale thread and said "only crazy people pay for these" and directed people to go torrent their games instead I'd be giving out useful information to help them save money?

so frustrating not being able to add to basket, still have my ver preorder at £84 but would much rather pay £70
the.gooner
10 Jul 17 #295
Better options? Ha! £70 for a console with 21 classic games isn't bad at all. I don't want a emulator that will lag and also cost me about the same price with a couple of decent controllers.

Each to their own I guess.

Yep, me too. I did panic a little when I saw who the text was from as I thought they might be cancelling it!

I gave a landline number so no text for me. My order says 'Sit tight, order in progress' anyone else had this? It doesnt sound very promising

I did a live chat with Argos a short while ago to ask for the tracking number for my SNES. They said there isn't one and is just coming through Royal Mail. Which is a bit concerning!
