Not sure why this hasn't got a little heat, great price for the 600ohm version. I've had these and they are great but bear in mind that you really want an amplifier or DAC running these. These aren't for mobiles etc however, you want the lower (and slightly cheaper) ohm versions for that purpose.

Great price for a great pair of headphones, like the comment above, said you will need a decent amp to power these correctly.(Oppo HA-2 is a good choice) I had these for a while before upgrading to the Amirons. These are also extremely comfy! I don't think I've had a headphone as comfy as the DT990s.

Without knowing much about these, I'd say almost certainly yes. Beats are style over substance pieces.

Short answer: Yes. yes yes yes yes yes.
Longer answer: I'm not going to go on a huge rant about it, but Beats are a notoriously poor value product, marrying mediocre audio quality and build materials with a grossly inflated price tag. Beats have gotten better in the last four or so years since the release of the Solo 2, but there are better sounding options than every Beats headphone at their respective price points, even if you like a very bassy sound.
That being said, these Beyerdynamics are not necessarily a good alternative to Beats, depending on what you need them for. Beats headphones are "closed back" headphones, which means the earcups are sealed for isolation- it keeps the audio in and outside noise out. They're also built to be driven efficiently by mobile devices, laptops and pretty much anything else with a headphone jack. The 990s posted here are "open back" headphones, which means there is virtually zero isolation from the outside environment, making them poorly suited to use as a portable pair of headphones. They also have a very high impedance, meaning it takes a well amplified source to get the best audio quality out of them. In this sense they are not at all suited to the sort of situations you'd ordinarily find Beats being used for. For a pair of portable headphones to knock the socks off Beats for under £200, I would personally go for the V-Moda M100 ,they beat the Beats at their own game- they're stylish, portable (they have a foldable design) and have a bassy tonality that's actually well implemented and paired with excellent overall fidelity.

I have the 250ohm version which I bought for £125(using a £75 Amazon voucher from a mobile contract) I run them from a Musical Fidelity x can v3, x10v3, X-Dac v3 x psu v3. I love the sound, a little amplified at the high frequency range, but my older ears benefit from it. Midrange is exceptional and bass, although not pronounced is very detailed. I would have loved the 600ohm version.

Im still a bit peeved i let the oppo ha2 DAC go for £160 wharehouse deal. I left it in my basket too long and then it had gone. Not sure why i wanted it as i use beyerdynamc DT770 80 Ohms with my PC and onkyo amp which sound absouletly awesome.

All this talk over strong this or that etc. should be asking if they have a true/neutral sound. That is unless you want a Beats style over emphasized bass that distorts the true intended sound of just about everything listened to.
And as noted above, if these sound 'tame or weak' it's because they're being driven under powered.
