Is this as terrible as I've heard, or are the bad reviews just the usual negative 'JRPG mechanics are stuck in the past and need to evolve' rubbish?

This is pretty much a super low budget Star Ocean game.
But this is the kind of price the game is worth, so if you're looking to buy, just buy it. Just go into the game with extremely low expectations, that way when you see how much is missing from this game that you love in Star Ocean titles, you won't be as angry or disappointed.
Give this game another year or two of development time, so the devs could add in more in the way of towns, content and things to do, as well as improving the story and you'd have a quality game. However as it stands now you have a soulless Star Ocean title undeserving of the name.
