3 of them, brand new and sealed in John Lewis Leeds. Seems like a great price?

This is an excellent price but I don't think it will play UHD (4K) Bluray discs,
It will upscale HD Bluray discs.

Just had a look on the Sony website and sure enough it doesn't play UHD discs, just upscales normal Bluray to 4k.
£399 at Sony Centre as well

Why not buy an XBOX One S?

Because it's as basic a UHD player as imaginable.
This would run (red) rings around it.

OK I'll bite... Why? Genuinely curious. I use my Xbox One S to play Ultra HD discs and they look/sound great (full Atmos etc).
Am assuming by the red rings comment it was just a trollish comment, but if you have useful info as to why I'd love to hear it.
edit: Yeah, jeez, this Sony player isn't even an Ultra HD player. No rings being run today.
Because it plays stuff the xbox can't. SACD and DVD audio discs. It also supports FLAC and WAV multichannel and stereo, and ALAC and, the clincher for me it plays multichannel DSD from USB and via DLNA. The sound it produces isn't a kick in the **** off a Marantz CD6005. The video performance is exceptional as well. And yes, that long review on Amazon is the review of my player. I thought it was astonishing value at £299. At £149? Just buy one.

Ahh right because thats why people are buying Ultra HD players for SACD & DVD Audio as well as FLAC, WAV & ALAC oh and DSD USB lol..
Sounds like you want a decent stereo rather than something to play your 4K BD's.
I think the majority of people would prefer the ability to play Ultra HD DVD's 4K Streaming, XBOX, XBOX 360 & XBOX One Games, all in HDR too, along with all Dolby Digital HD, DTS HD & Atmos or you can just send uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1...

The one at £399 is the Sony UBP-X800. Amazon have it for £329.99. This is the standard bluray player

Just to repeat: this is an upscaling blu ray player NOT a 4K UHD blu ray player

But this isn't an Ultra HD player, it's an audio focused £149 Blu-Ray player which upscales to 4K and which plays more currently available audio and video formats natively any games console. They aren't comparable.

Just what I'm lookin for. Bluray with good audio and SACD option. It's not available online

HI there is no such thing as upscaling it can't add in what is not there. All it can do is some processing and scale the image. You are not going to benefit in anyway by using this. Best to get an xbox and enjoy. They all and I do mean this all use the same chip for the UHD processing at the moment no matter what is says on the box. The only difference would be outputs and things like dolby vision etc. Though show me the large number of dolby vision discs ?
Please check out before arguing.....

The Sony UBP-X800, which plays UHD Bluray discs and (just as importantly) Super Audio CDs is £329 at John Lewis including a two-year warranty. Be tempted, very tempted!! I certainly am. So many toys, so little cash.

179.99 buys you a real 4K bluray player, and just so happens to play upscaled Xbox One games too

Brilliant deal this if you're in the Leeds area and after a high quality disc player. Rated exceptionally highly by reviewers at its original £400 price . There was still at least 1 left on Friday afternoon...
