Couldn't find this model on Google so appears to be another exclusive to Amazon.
I thought it was a good deal as Costco are currently retailing the Sony KD65XE8596 at £1679.89, which is a significant discount from the retailing price of £2k+ at John Lewis.
Hopefully this helps someone.

The XE85 is a higher end model though, a better comparison would be the XD 75 for £1250 at AO.

That's a lower end model. This is somewhere in between. Actually closer the one OP quote as it's still in the XE range but the previous gen.

I can't find any reviews of the XE70 but I'd be surprised if that's the case. It's not the previous generation, merely a slightly older model released a year ago, that's all the E vs. D in the model name signifies.

By definition it is the older 'D' generation rather than this year's 'E' model series.
However, I also agree the comparision with a XE8 series is rather inappropriate.

By definition? I wasn't aware that generation was defined as being part of a specific year. In which specific year was Generation X born then?
Generations are usually defined as groups with significant amounts in common, and significant differences to other generations.
I don't know how you'd define the previous generation of TVs. Maybe Sony's previous platform, or non-smart completely. Or maybe Full HD or even SD or CRT. I certainly wouldn't call what looks like it's probably a minor yearly revision an entirely new generation though.
In fact given that Sony have dropped Android from this model I'd give good odds on it being a downgrade from the XD70 so that Sony can compete with popular budget 4K sets.

Just to give an alternative viewpoint, I have had a nightmare with my 2016 version (KD-65X8505C). HDR on it is dreadful, with pale washed-out colours. Android crashes on a regular basis (often hourly). DSE/Banding is awful It's been swapped out 3 times now, all of which have been the same as the previous one if not worse. Having writtten to Kaz Hirai, the CEO in Japan, Sony have finally caved and offered me a refund. I wouldn't touch another one.

Maybe this year's one is better, but for me last years was really bad.
