Okay, It's quite a big outlay for a camera, but for what it is after CB, it's brill.
A few places dropping prices on this, but some only offering the 1 year cover, which I think is well worth the little extra to have on such an expensive bit of kit. Stunning camera for the money after Cashback, which you can claim on the Sony Site Here Promotion runs from 24th May to 3rd September 2017
There's a promo running for 500 free 6x4 prints on certain model, which includes this model.
It's not for everyone, but worth considering if you're after something a little more high end  Gotta beat that £12 Vivitar job I bought way back when

Price on this doesn't seem to be going down after all this time. I paid £750 a year and a half ago (after Sony rebate) for mine with the lens kit. eBayed it and bought the A7Rii a few months ago for £1600. Nearly new one, just two months old by the receipt.
These bodies really require some serious lens investment to shine. At a grand for a camera you're probably looking for some really lovely images, and I'm not sure a lot of buyers would be that happy with what they get from the 28-70mm. You can get some very nice shots, but don't expect to be wowed.
Personally I think the A7 is a good body to buy as it's holding its value, and you can use it to build up your Sony lenses if you like the system, then move up to a better body later.
Key lenses in my opinion (ignore RRPs, can get them much cheaper):
If you do a lot of portraits then look up the Batis 85mm. Seen lovely images from it on flickr.
Look to pay around 30 to 40% less than RRP for the lenses. Barely used ones pop up on eBay a lot and you can get the grey import ones too with quick delivery from Ireland.

I bought the a7ii for just £1020 with 2 years warranty from LCE in Lincoln nearly 2 years ago so find it ridiculous that this is considered a deal with the a7iii being released by xmas.

It's definitely something you have to be using a lot to get the most out of it, there are some great cameras around that would suit the occasional shoot. I have the Nikon D3300 DSLR and that was about £300 on offer at the time. I use it a fair bit and will be upgrading my kit later this year. The A7 is a beautiful camera though that has been on my radar a fair while. Might have to move into the shed though

Yes, but they're both very different in their intended usage scenarios. A Nikon D5 and a Hello Kitty Instead Camera are also both for taking photos, but I'd only recommend one of those to a sports photographer.
To be more specific, the RX10 is a bridge camera. By using a smaller sensor format and a tailor-made fixed lens, it is able to fit a 25x zoom lens into an overall package the size of a small DSLR. By contrast, the A7 uses a very large full frame sensor and interchangeable lenses, which means greater potential image quality but achieving the same degree of zoom as the RX10 is going to be impossible in terms of a single lens' zoom range. For example the "kit lens" included with this camera covers roughly the same perspective as the 1x-3x of the RX10's lens. To reach the same perspective as the RX10's furthest zoomed point, you'd need to buy an adaptor and strap on an enormous lens, which would look something like this:
Then you have to consider your needs for features like video quality, autofocus, articulating screens, low light image quality etc.
So yeah, while they are both for taking photos, they take very different approaches to it. Spend some time figuring out what exactly you want from a camera, then figure out which brands have cameras that best meets those needs.

I'd like one of these; but I know I wouldn't use it much, and its just too much money to have sitting on a shelf depreciating.

Two generations old now, hardly mind-blowingly good when they first released it, tbh... I wouldn't pay the thick end of a grand for one of these.

Got mine last week in the Amazon Prime day for just £619 inc cashback, not actually seen it yet as bought on holiday and not back yet. Main reason I got it is for the viewfinder, now that I wear glasses an LCD doesn't cut it for me anymore.

How does this compare to the RX10 Mk3?

Not comparable. Different camera for different purpose.
You'd be hard pushed to notice any improvement in image quality over the APS-C a6xxx cameras, especially with this kit lens. Furthermore, the autofocus on this camera is pretty average.
Don't believe the full-frame hype.

The kit lens is actually quite good, dynamic range and level of detail retrievable from RAW files on the A7 is amazing, way better than any of the a6000 cameras. It's not hot though, same price elsewhere.
