5" is compact nowadays?...at 720p my preference would opt for a 4" Iphone SE albeit the lack of storage expansion.

My lumia 925 was the perfect size before Microsoft took over the the production from NOKIA. Apple get a lot of stick for their non-conformity but damn it! ...you have to give them top marks for their designs.

I would love to see more from android or windows(highly unlikely) within the 4"-4.5" range. Makes me chuckle when i see people with skinny jeans with no room for the 5"+ phones in the pockets

The Magnetic sensor will show minute details like change in your orientation as well. You can change your direction and you will be able to see that on your smartphone screen. This is particularly help full when you are using navigation on foot. In the Absence of magnetic senor you can see your position on the Map but, not your orientation. the Map doesn’t rotate when you do. Magnetic sensor helps you to take that first step in the correct direction with the help of the direction pointer.

The Nokia name is all it is now, a name. Do some research.
Lloytron
19 Jul 17 1 #28
They are made by HMD who licensed the name, yes. They also bought the phone division from Microsoft.

HMD is run for the most part by ex Nokia veteran staff. The Phone Division bought from Microsoft is also Nokia staff.

They have the name, the experience, the processes and principles.

So no, it's not just the name.
misterleoni
19 Jul 17 4 #29
'For the most part'? Maybe some people from HR and they guy from the photocopying division. In all seriousness though a lot of the major talent went elsewhere - I mean, do we think they just sat around working in a call centre until HMD bought the name back?

Whilst it's not true that this HMD Nokia has no legacy from the Nokia of old - it's certainly no Polaroid - it is a far cry from the Nokia of yore. I think the fairest thing to say is that there are some people who worked for Nokia who are part of the HMD group and are desperate to get the name back into the public consciousness. Finnish people are very proud of Nokia and don't want to see it go the way of the dodo - the recent rehash of the 3310 is evidence of this need to rekindle the name 'Nokia'.

Some people think they're going to start making top of the line 41mp Pureview cameras and carrying on where they left off though and I don't think this is likely - they now have far less camera and even general hardware expertise than most manufacturers out there as they have lost most of the big guns - Ari Partinen, their lead camera engineer for example left for Apple three years ago. They still have Juha Alakarhu but he's on the Ozo 360 camera team at Nokia. I think the idea that they're going to come out of the ashes with a stonking camera is far fetched.

What I've seen so far from this Nokia is some very nice looking handsets. I've seen nothing else to make me convinced that they're anything more special than a regular old Chinese import from Gearbest though - which also often look very nice.

As it stands we could have a company with some passionate Finnish employees who want to make something great, but we could also have a company ultimately led by the desire to exploit the name and past heritage which ends up doing little else.

Have to say that I hope all the more positive predictions come true and that I'm entirely wrong though - I used to love Nokia phones back in the day and I would love to see them back in the game. Don't think this is a great start though - MTK chip and no fingerprint scanner...yuk

Sure, of course a lot of them went their seperate ways but it is a lot more than the HR departments and the Photocopying division . They have got a lot of experienced talent behind them, that's my point. Have they got all the talent? No. They haven't got all the chaff either, of which there was a whole load!

I think we all need to remember that the Nokia of old did have some talented people. On the other hand, they also had some rubbish people and that's why they ended up getting bought by Micro$oft. In the old days of Nokia, there hardware was always good but underpowered. The software usually had lots of bugs on release and they had the annoying habit of taking away features only to add them as new features later, (Google now love to do this.) The only thing that really set them apart was the camera quality.

It has a CPU that's a piece of poop so that doesn't surprise me. No amount of regular updates will fix that.

As a previous poster said (and it pains me to say this as I used to be a Nokia fanboy), the Nokia of old were highly flawed in terms of their hardware and their software was hardly up to much. With hindsight the best thing I can say about Nokia was that they broke ground when it came to camera hardware and they took risks when it came to designs.

Aside from that the benefit of hindsight gives a rather shoddy story about the rest of company. I recall appalling small C: drives, abysmally low RAM that gave memory errors all the time, sliding mechanisms that came loose, unfinished software that often meant that a new device would be nothing but a headache for months. They even released a phone in the N96 that was *less* powerful than the N95.

Look at their ridiculous naming conventions for software (who knew what the Ovi Store was?) and the half-baked implementation of them, look at the way settings and system features were buried within seemingly random subfolders. Look at the way Symbian seemed designed to frustrate rather than simplify. Does anyone else remember how you used to have to give permission EVERY TIME you connected to the internet on Nokia phones, even up to the N97?

We can dream all we like about a return to days of yore but in all honesty, even if they had the same team they had back in 2006, I still wouldn't see Nokia as a hero brand set to change the world. As stated above, they died because they weren't good enough. Their team was flawed.

Hopefully HMD Global will go right where the old Nokia went wrong but - honestly - this typical Gearbest garbage is not going to wet anyone's whistle, surely.

Like I posted earlier I bought one for my son on this deal. Side by side comparison with my own nexus 6P really surprised me; yes everything IS slower, but it's a 5th of the price.

For £109 unlocked this is great, the Moto G5 just looks and feels cheap in comparison. Testing out the 3 has already got me tempted by the 8!

20 Jul 17 #44
Some of the Chinese imports for £60-£70 on here are equally impressive as this from what I can tell. Nice feeling housings don't tell the whole story, though this has the advantage of being on the high street. I don't think *no one* should buy this or anything as I'm sure it suits your son but I equally don't think this is a particularly special piece of hardware for the money, given the obvious skimping they have done in terms of the fingerprint scanner and CPU.

At least the Nokia 3 support EE VoLTE and VoWifi (Wi-Fi Calling) out of the box where the Moto G5 have no VoLTE nor VoWifi on EE Network.
misterleoni to lingshum
21 Jul 17 #46
Are you sure about that? It's the sort of thing that doesn't get mentioned by the manufacturer and I'm sure my Moto came up with a VOLTE logo on EE for the brief time I had it. Could be imagining it though!

I'm more amazed that someone out there is still using BBM to be honest!

I wasn't doubting that the Nokia has those features by the way - they're quite common on devices with Android 7. I meant are you sure the Moto doesn't have those features, since it also has Android 7, and neither VOLTE nor Wifi Calling need any particular hardware (other than 4G and wifi, obviously!). My understanding is that both of these features are inherent within Nougat and don't need to be added in carrier firmware or by the individual manufacturer - as was the case early on.
lingshum

Not all android 7 handset will work with EE volte /vowifi . Handset like Sony need EE Branded Firmware to get VoLTE and VoWifi. Unbranded Sony handset (for example) won't be able to access Vowifi nor VoLTE. Some handsets like Newer Samsung Galaxy S8. Unbranded only able to access Vowifi but not VoLTE .

22 Jul 17 #51
I don't think that's definite. I've used wifi calling and VoLTE on devices that are not on that list - such as the Huawei P9.

CPW price is £129. I find it impossible to get their reduced PAYG prices. Either my SIM doesn't qualify or they haven't got any of the correct PAYG SIMs in stock. Vodafone are even worse. You order online and the phone doesn't turn up, or you click and collect go to the shop and are told computer says no because of a glitch the order wasn't finalised and it's more than their jobs worth to give you the phone. Then you spend hours on to support trying to resolve it. I ended up getting credit card company to refund me when Vodafone wouldn't.
chancooluk to jakeby
23 Jul 17 1 #54
Its £99.99 plus £10 top up at CPW (£109.99). This isn't a PAYG upgrade price, so no SIM is required to purchase.

Hey all, why is a fingerprint scanner so important to some folk, is this required for NFC payment?
preecey to obwan2014
24 Jul 17 #60
Fingerprint scanners are a lot quicker to unlock the phone.

It isn't essential to have one to use Android Pay. As long as there is an NFC chip inside, and you have a screen lock set up, such as a pattern or PIN, it'll work fine.

This is a Budget Nokia from their new range of phones, if you want better specs go for the Nokia 5 or 6 (They do a nice 64Gb version of the Nokia 6) or wait a few months for the launch of the Flagship Nokia 8 or 9 but expect to pay a premium.

These phones are Dual Sim outside of UK Voda/CPW, available to buy outside the UK in Europe and Asia (Dont buy from China as you wont be able to install Google Play Store, Hong Kong ones should be ok).

Welcome Back Nokia.
