Just right click the Avast icon in your notification area and turn on silent mode. Voila, no more annoying popups.

Good price, awful product.

Any AV should be better than none, was running paid for Bitdefender, but renewal cost seem steep to me, now using Bitdefender Free with BitDefender Anti-RansomWare...nearly went for Avira, always preferred it in the old days, Opera as a browser with pop up blocker, nothing is perfect but this seems to be working for me. Plus opera has built in vpn.

I'm using McAfee at the moment, (free for Bt broadband users) . what can I say? I did get hacked in to my computer (Win 10). lost all my photos (only). Virus has blocked Internet connection (both Ethernet and WiFi) but McAfee was showing connected to Internet and I was able to update database but was unable to scan ma computer. I had to reinstall system in the end. we'll I'm still using it but do not recommend. Much better off with free Avast or AVG, best so far Kaspersky, might gonna have to go back...

I have issues with Qihoo 360 a few years back. My wifes PC* was infested with spyware, and Qihoo was STOPPING me from deleting it; nor could I disable or delete Qihoo itself.

In the end I had to format the HDD and start from scratch.

AFAIK Qihoo is Chinese government sponsored spyware.

* Running the Chinese version of Qihoo360 with the PC running the Chinese localised version of Windows - I forget if it was XP or 7.

One of my friends had this and if screwed up his pc and he lost all his backups he had a nightmare with it.

Still a terrible product, just get something like avast free and does so much better

If your looking for an on demand nasty removal tool, I'd recommended ADWCleaner, recently been purchased by Malwarebytes.

I also have an on demand scanner installed malwarebytes, use it roughly once a fortnight or so, have unchecky running all the time, Web of trust installed on my browser, plus experience goes a long way you get to know when you shouldn't proceed with something online.

AV tools are like underwear, many different styles, all do the same job.

A good website is Gizmo's Freeware, they review various free software, their AV review is here.......

Qihoo 360 Total Security is their current top product, closely followed by Avast Free.

Yuk, would rather give the £2 to charity

Panda free antivirus works for me.

Although they've fixed it now, for a while this was one of the few virus checkers that offered no protection against the latest ransomware

You could spend £2 on the lottery and win millions, you probably won't but I'd do this before giving McCrappy any of my money.

I always take precautions, everyone gets a false name and address.

Makes it a pain for Amazon deliveries though.

Avast! does a better job and is free, although they do have the odd annoying pop-ups, some of which are touting for you to buy the premium package.

Sophos for me and McAfee Endpoint Encryption are my choices but its hard to argue against this at a couple of quid if the PC is fast enough to run it.
