Word of caution, you aren't supposed to reuse car seats after an accident. In fact I think Maxi Cosi and some other manufacturers will exchange the seat after an impact.
With this in mind, IMO its not advisable buying car seats second hand. You never know the provenance and there's little way of you checking everything is in order. Obviously that doesn't mean we should bin them, hand me downs between friends and family where you can trust the source are a different matter.

there is a website to check - fit my maxi cosi - or something like that. It says it fits 3 cars in our household but only back facing on back seat.

Works great with the FamilyFix base and you can get used ones for under £50 on ebay vs. £150-200 new.
Unlike a seat, the bases are easily cleaned to be as clean as new as they are hard plastic.

Buying something that's clean isn't the issue - you should never buy a second hand seat or base because even though it make look fine to the naked eye you don't know whether or not it has been in an accident and therefore may have been weakened in some way. You don't want the hidden weakness to be the thing that causes the seat or base to fail if you are then involved in a collision.
