Saw this in my account area on the virgin media home page. I previously had 100mbps plan, no phone or tv. Upgrade was free!

Guessing there is no equivalent upgrade for those of us on 200mb? Can't complain really as I'm on a very good deal with them at the moment and nothing I do remotely stresses a 200mb connection....

well, ive just downgraded from 200mb, to 150mb after the free 100mb to 200mb upgrade.... As we are at the end of our package had a call from the loyalty team and have negotiated £30/month, 150mb, line rental and call package included. Our package had increased and was set to go up to £55 from £45 now the promotional credits have run out. Was going to leave to join sky and retention's initially offered £42, but wanted £30...
Could have kept the £200mb for £35/month, but was told the 150mb package may be eligible for the 300mb upgrade down the line, plus I thought that there would inevitably be price increases regardless of what we agree to.
£30 for what we got is ok, but no new box offered - if you leave you would get around a 50% off any package offer, we just didnt have the time to go that far this year.

I'm paying £27 for 100mb BB & phone, got a retention deal last year but no box upgrade (on Hub2 with is sh*te as a wireless router, had to buy a Netgear). Just had a free upgrade from whatever it was before (76mb?), so I'm guessing they won't boost me again just yet. Worth a call though.

Hate to think what we are paying to Virgin Media as we have the football etc. Even with so called loyalty discount still paying about a £100 per month. Our wifi speed isn't great, probably cos there are several walls between the router and living room. is there anything we could get to improve wifi around the whole house? We are rubbish at tech and hate thought of ringing them for advise I never understand.

4 options:
1) download a 'wifi analyser' app for your phone (there should be an exact match for android on google play - dont know about iphones) - this will tell you how strong your wifi signal is and what competing signals might be interfering if they share the same wifi channel. Using that information you could try to move your router to a more central part of the house (you might need a longer ethernet cable to accomplish this though!). You mentioned 'a house' so presuming your neighbours are further away but if the app shows any overlap with another signal you'd want to move the wifi to another channel in the admin settings of the router
2) buy a wifi repeater - a search on here or amazon will find these
3) buy a better router with stronger wifi capabilities; i'd recommend either tp-link or asus
4) keep your virgin router as is and use some powerline adapters; these function much like ethernet cable does, except it uses the houses internal electrical cabling to push a network signal down. the idea here is that you plug one powerline adapter in next to your existing router and then another in another room further away. you can then either set up another router/access point here.. or you can just use that powerline adapter to plug directly in to something (eg tv, media box, console)

Considering I got them to gimme 200mb, weekend calls and TVXL HD for £35 (around Black Friday time). Inconsistent swings and roundabouts mate.
Next Black Friday I'll be pushing for the same deal + either sky sports or their new V6 TiVO box.

Not happy... I'm on 70Mbps, with just the Talk Weekend phone package, and I'm being charged £42pm! I'm out of contract, but if I want to change my package I would have to start a new contract (min 12 months) - unfortunately, there's some uncertainty with my landlord, and I may have to move in a few months... If I do move, and the new property doesn't have Virgin, then I will have to pay off the rest of my contract, so I can't risk it... Their retention agents say there's nothing they can do without starting a new contract.

Just called them I'm on bb only £32.39 for 76mb and a crap superhub 2. Best she could offer me was 100mb £30.20, 200mb £35.25 or the gamer package for £40 something and "maybe" a upgraded hub. When I said about others getting better deals or upgrades she said OK? So much for 6+ years of loyalty.

Virgin's stupidly high contention ratios mean in some areas, such as Barnes SW London, it doesn't matter what speed they promise, as come the evening it drops to slower than your phone's 4g connection.
You'd be better off using semaphore.

You could try powerline adapters that run broadband through your wiring/plugs. Funnily enough Virgin sell them.

The dirty secret with VIrgin internet is upload speed. Even my mums basic ADSL gets an upload speed of over 6mbps. And it feels 'snappy' even with the work VPN. While my VIrgin cable has an upload of 3mbps. Were I to take the VIrgin shilling and upgrade to 200mbps I'd be getting - correct me if wrong - a princely 6mbps upload! So it'd take about a day to back a 64GB iPhone up to the cloud. Or about 6 hours to transfer a VM to a work server. Absolutely not worth the bother.
AsadP2012 to buglawton
20 Jul 17#41
Weird.
I'm getting 6-7 upload with the 100 Mbps down package which can be good at home.
I too use work VPN and I too find it annoying trying to copy files back and forth.. even if in the Kb range.
Midnight.Tboy to buglawton
20 Jul 17#42
So true, VMs upload speed is dire. What's worse.....with ADSL (as much as I don't like it in general), you can upload without it affecting your download speed. With VM, if you max out your upload speed, it directly affects download speed.. Whilst I generally don't upload myself, and get max dl speed most of the time, it kills my net when the kids are uploading their youtube hour gameplay vids that noone is ever going to watch

Just had a free upgrade from whatever it was before (76mb?), so I'm guessing they won't boost me again just yet.
Worth a call though.
