I can control spotify, tune in radio and hive heating from this which makes it worth while. so long as amazon keep on investing in the tech, it could be a standard in homes.

Does it link in anyway to my music collection that is controlled by Apple? I have it on iTunes cloud with the match service and my copies are stored on a network drive. I do not and will not subscribe to Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon music or any other pay monthly service

Damn you op! Couldn't stop my fingers pressing Buy! Buy! Buy! Even though my brain was screaming No! No! No! (as will the Mrs when she finds out where her birthday money's gone). I think the posters noting that what you can achieve with the dot can easily be achieved by other means is quite true but it's still a bit too tempting to buy a nice new toy (or 3). I just have to hope sonos pull their finger out so they'll have some sort of purpose. I have a couple of old school zp120/amps and zp 90 to try with the line in until that arrives - Can't believe I'm so lazy I can't even be bothered to pull my phone out of my pocket and press play, I just need a chair that roles me every couple of hours and my demise into a lazy fat blob is complete - oh! Too late! P.S heat added!

Agreed but you can argue that with any device and looking at this site its such a materialistic world. If you need something then fine but a lot is tat. People think it makes them feel better but you'll always want more pefect for the marketeers!

Good deal at this price. It seems the Echo Dot is good if you want to control stuff or use for alarms, but if you want to listen to radio, music, etc, the Echo (with the bigger speaker) is needed (or an externally attached speaker). I have an Echo already and am considering getting more, but am still undecided about three Echo Dots for the price of one Echo (in this deal)

Sorry if this has already been asked but what would be the better option, an echo full size or an echo dot with the £20 anker Bluetooth speaker in prime day deal? As I understand the dot can do everything the full size can
anuruddha
11 Jul 17#29
go for echo dot with anchor bluetooth speaker. Echo has a built in speaker but it doesn't sound nice because it mono

11 Jul 17#30
Ikea smart light bulbs are also due to be compatible soon. 3 bought for me

The £20 Anker speaker is also mono. It's unlikely to sound any better than the Echo - and could be worse.

12 Jul 17#33
Now the owner of 3 dots too.
Thought about getting the Anker £20 too - but also came to the conclusion it won't be much better. I mean 2x3w speaker looks is a bit weak (their next one up / 20w version goes for £55, which is a big jump - can't really justify that because boom 2 is not much more expensive and infinitely more resell-able; there were a few other 20w Chinese made ones on Amazon at around 29-40 - I presume it's similar tech / rebranded chassis - since I don't know enough - I'm happy to wait and find out if dot is okay on its own).
The logitech z623 was interesting (upto 200w RMS - though not keen on having too many cables.

Hot I was debating 3 of these or one echo after finding out they are able to hook up to other speakers I went for the 3 dots selling one off today as right now I only need 2 one for my Bowers and wilkins for the main room and one for the bedroom with my wireless speacker works out I will have 2 for £50 after I sell the 3rd one off later

can you connect the dot to multiple BT speakers so I can choose which speakers the dot will play the music from? and crucially, can this be done just by voice? what this needs is a chromecast audio skill so I can control my CCA connected speakers via the dot...aint gonna happen though which is a shame.
EN1GMA
12 Jul 17#47
with regards to music, more than happy that tune in radio and spotify work. shame my play music wont work with it but spotify generally has me covered. with a massive amount of skills already and more being added, hopefully this will be a investment. google unfortunately have a habit of dropping tech leaving customers out of pocket.
G0rdonGekko
12 Jul 17#48
You just tell the dot to connect to the speaker/s you want to use providing they are bluetooth of course and then connect to your source for music (e.g iPhone). Then choose playlists etc
Hopefully I can set up an activity using the Logitech remote (which I also ordered) for this. I haven't investigated this, but can't see why not as you set up the devices and then tell it to the dot to action the activity.
EN1GMA
12 Jul 17#49
thanks for that. can the dot connect to multiple BT speakers at the same time and play the music at the same time? if so, that could make my chromecast audios abit redundant.
looking forward to the dot now as before I was sceptical but could prove useful. only thing that im unhappy about is the fact that you cant delete your voice recordings from the cloud for the conversations you've had with alexa.
19DembaBa19
12 Jul 17#50
Why not connect your Bluetooth speaker direct to your phone and listen to music from the phone and leave the dot because dot is not a speaker and you can't play music from your phone into dot, it only plays Spotify premium (not worth it) and Amazon music (too expensive) why not play you tube songs

not sure what the privacy concerns were. alexa is always on but only listening to the key word. only start recording and saving to the cloud once you say alexa(or key word). all the other time when its listening, its not uploading anything. liking mine so far. just trying to get it set up with the skills.

Check here and you will see that Amazon is likely the very least of your tracking problems...
This is far worse than online tracking cookies. The unit itself is a microphone and by default has to be listening all the time in case you ask it a question.
A tracking cookie might record your browsing habits but it can't listen to a conversation about when you might be on holiday.
The data from tracking cookies is processed to form part of a database (big data) and is processed by a machine not a human being.
With these devices there are teams of people sat down listening to what you say.
Far worse in my opinion.

I sent mine back. It doesn't have enough features yet to warrant paying for.
