Not too sure about the Tosh drive, thinking of just getting the NAS and waiting for a WD hard drive deal, the price for the NAS itself is £77.69 which isn't bad actually. Having said that I have three NAS devices already, an Iomega and two Zyxel (1 x single and 1 x double) and don't really use them that much even though I have a need. I was thinking moving to a Synology might be an improvement in usability generally and hence it might get used! Can anyone who has one comment?

I have a 213J. With 2 x 3tb WD reds. It has been fantastic. Always available as mapped drives on laptop. Easy to use mobile apps for photos, music, video etc. My wife and I both have geofencing set up on iPhone app so all our photos and videos upload when we come home. Use it quite frequently remotely and it always works.
Honestly can't recommend it enough

How do these work for backups, do you just point windows file history for example to backup to the nas or does the nas itself have some backup software solution?

Is there any point to this if there is no raid on the cheaper models

Usually dispatched within 1 - 3 weeks. I'm in no hurry and I have Amazon Prime.
I have a bunch of synology units (2/4ba), and use a usb hard drive for backing up the nas.
the synology DSM software is a dream. back up phone's, multiple computers, even up to cloud.
I have 1.4tb of photos uploading to Amazon, it synchs my Dropbox, is hosts my music and videos.
not sure I'd by a solo drive unit but if that's your needs, rock on.

Yes as this will be a 2nd level backup. I am already using the cloud but would like something local which will also if possible protect against ransomware attacks.

Don't have it as a mapped drive in that case, most ransomware will encrypt that as well! Use ftp or make sure you have an offline backup of this too!

Cannot recommend synology enough. I've had a ds210j for about 6 years and it's superb for all the above reasons. took the time to clean about 2 inches of dust off the fans and it still runs quiet.

I use mapped drive as it's easier for wife and kids to use. I have a full back up on a removable drive done once a week. And a second removable back up of the really important stuff. E.g documents and photos. Overkill but worst case I nuke computers and diskstation and lose very little
