Bought a 1070 Gaming Z and had to hack out a large piece off metalwork to get it to fit, replace the psu and what once looked like a discreet hi-fi htpc now looks like a monster barfing.
Wife isn't impressed.

By all means go SLI but realise support is generally very poor apart from some games. I have a 1080ti and it destroys everything at 1440p and gets 4k/60 in most titles with some tweaking. Your going to have 1 card sat idle a lot of the time so whilst I understand your concern regarding cost I would still advise selling your 1080 and getting a 1080ti, which can be had from about £650 at the moment.

A colleague has just been introducing us all to the world of mining and crypto currency over the past week or so. He has a mate who has built a rig with 5x 1070 cards and he has just built one with 2x 1080ti.

He is looking to use nicehash and its quite simple and auto switches to the most profitable currency to mine although you may end up earning more with other methods and tools. They also have a nice profit calculator based on a gfx card you choose albeit probably a bit on the optimistic side. As for ROI its tricky and you really need to get a spreadsheet up and running to run some numbers but last week it was looking his 2 card 1080ti rig was going to take about 3.5 months to cover the cost of the cards and electric, this week its about 6.5 as the price has dropped a bit today. Over that time it will get more difficult to mine as well so you return will probably drop. Its all a bit of a gamble really but who know what these currencies will peak at!

Also not completely sure why the 1070 is favoured over the 1080ti as although the cost of the latter is quite high it also is more efficient power wise so you incur less electric expenses and its more powerful so will generate more income.

tbh its all quite volatile and I expect there to be quite big peaks and troughs in the values of crypto currencies going forward. It also takes some getting your head around and watch out for transaction fees as they can sting you.

like AVF, OCUK etc where people actually have meaningful feedback.

I know it's made some card like the amds difficult to get, but remember what happened to ram prices when ssds become popular, or the price of hardware due to brexit etc, it's just the ups and downs of life.

You didn't offend me, I just generally dislike mining and what it has done to the GPU market as a whole.

And I would agree with the above poster and warn against SLI. Even Nvidia are trying to discourage it at this point, it has no future as far as VR is concerned and fewer and fewer games are supporting it every year.

it's because I already have a 1080, thinking of a way to improve framerates without spending too much.

the TI is what I would do if I didn't already have a 1080 but spent too much on it when it came out and need to control my spending now.

ok so this isn't a mining thread, but did something I ask offend you, is it my use use case... just curious , I am not known to be offensive not look to offend.

if I offended then apologies, I genuinely want to know about mining, which is what GPUs can also be used for, I am hoping it helps pay for itself eventually. and help my gaming framerates..

if gaming is your priority don't bother with sli go ti. the 1080 isn't great for mining compared to its cost, and sli isn't used in mining. last time I checked you could get the equivalent 1070 of this for 340 on Amazon. if you can, go 1080ti and 1070, the latter exclusively for mining.

saying that I think the new sniper elite does benefit from sli, but it def seems to be becoming defunct

I think you're being a bit harsh there, mining can be a great way to justify the cost of a good gpu to a gamer.

I'm not being funny but if you want to discuss that then please take that to another thread or PM. Don't bring that **** in here. I really, really dislike miners.

You can mine fine on a 1080, they're just not as efficient ROI wise.

The card is showing as order upon request for me - I think quite a lot of them are out of stock from Novatech right now, what with the mining craze :smile:

Also this looks to be the same as the 1070 in that it is a little shorter than regular 1080s so good if you have a snug case. Palit are a big name in East Asia and quality is very good.

This requires at least a decent 500W PSU so be careful.

Just shows how efficient these cards are- all that GPU power but needing only a 500w PSU. Great stuff...I own the same design but the 1070 and it is nice and simple and temps are very good.
