I'm looking for a decent entry level gaming laptop. From shopping around this seems like a good spec at this price range from Laptop Direct. 2.1% available via topcashback too.

Link doesn't launch for me.
Is the dell a refurb? I've found some good refurb options around a similar price for the Inspiron but I could be tempted by the one you listed as I have a 15% off code but unsure which laptop you tried to list (well precisely which I should say)

Hmm,
I asked the 2 questions about (above backpack and free game) so cheers for confirming you got a backpack @gerdleah. It now appears laptopsdirect have sneakily REMOVED the photos of the backpack and have updated their listing with the FREE rocket league game with the purchase.
I asked them to confirm if you get the backpack now or not but they haven't replied to my email, so I'm gonna buy another laptop elsewhere instead.

I have an MSI GE72 6QD from last year. It's essentially the predecessor to this laptop and I was very impressed with it (even if I am new to PC gaming).
The GTX 1050 is supposed to give a 30% improvement on performance over the 960M in my laptop, and mine can run MGS5, Dishonored 2 and The Witcher 3 on Very High at 30-45 fps. Not perfect but enough for more casual gaming. Back then that laptop cost £950 as a special deal, so this seems like a bargain.
You might want to find a laptop with more VRAM in its graphics card, as this only has 2GB. Might not be very futureproof. You might want to do some more research and not take my word for it though. The processor used seems a bit overkill compared to the graphics card, but it will allow for very quick encoding of videos if that's your thing.
What I can vouch for in this laptop (as it is very similar to mine) is excellent audio out of the jack; a vast collection of IO; solid IPS display; great boot times (thanks to the SSD + HD); good RGB backlit keyboard and passable trackpad.
Mine was reportedly quite hard to open up and you may void your warranty, so consider that. However you can most likely upgrade the available RAM to at least 16GB. Some distributors will arrange this for you on request (as mine did) so you can keep your warranty and avoid breaking something.

Just received the laptop and I can confirm it comes with the backpack. At work just now so will let you know if you get a free game too.

I never saw a free game comment. Can't see it now either. Some sites seem to be offering Rocket League though for laptops over £500. This is just speculation though.

I can't say for certain the back pack will come but it's coming tomorrow. If it's not in there I will be complaining to Laptop direct!

Got x2 quick questions...
1). The product listing on laptop direct site (in the photos) shows a MSI backpack included, do you get the backpack ?
2). On the laptop direct website for this laptop it also says ''free game with this'' - what is the free game ?
Any idea if this would run Quake Champions or Overwatch at 60fps with full settings at 1080p (assuming the screen is 1080p or HDMI to 1080p TV/monitor)? Many thanks

Some benchmarks suggest you could get 88+ FPS at high settings, but around 54FPS at ultra settings in Overwatch using the 1050.
Personally I'd rather have an I5-7300 cpu and a 1050ti graphics card, however I haven't found a laptop with that combo outside of PC specialists - and it would be >£900.

I hesitate to say definitely
But Overwatch isn't that intensive, a 1050 should do the job easily. Looks about 80 FPS on ultra, but it might be slightly less coming from a laptop.

I've got a Dell 7567 with i5 and 1050 (got it from the outlet for £562) and it does not manage Overwatch at Ultra settings above around 35fps. You'll have to compromise with some settings to achieve 60fps. A 1050Ti would definitely be better.

Thinking of selling my desktop PC.. It's a damn good spec but rarely play games these days.. Like the idea of moving this to my log cabin.. But damn would I miss the x34

The Dell 7000 1080p currently have horrid TN screens that are bad even to TN standards. But Dell have just announced that all inspiron models are going to use ips screens as standard. It's worth waiting for these to come through if looking at the 7000 series.

Yup I have one for a work machine, it is adequate but ips should make a huge difference.

They have the 4K model which is IPS starting at £894 but with 8GB and 128GB/1TB drives.
Or for £971 you get 4K IPS, 16GB, 512GB M.2 PCIe.

Cold from me I'm afraid as MSI laptops in my experience as $h!t. Their aftersales services is extremely poor and will use every excuse in the book to refuse a genuine warranty claim. The tiniest scratch on the casing will render the warranty void. They use an external repaired called D & J Henry who examines the laptop and it seems, in their interest, to find faults with it and pass on to the customer. It's a shame coming from a company who make decent motherboards in my experience.

If I wanted to just play games from 2015 and earlier would a 960m do the job? I want to clear my steam backlog from yesteryear lol.

isn't the screen/panel on inspiron a let down at this price? unless they have started to upgrade as in the US

I was on the lookout for a laptop that would be good for video editing. This looks like it might fit the bill? Or considering I'm not too bothered about gaming, are there any better options closer to the £500 mark?

This laptop looks like a good deal if you want to do video editing (assuming <4K resolution). You would be hard pressed to find another laptop cheaper than this one with dedicated current gen GPU.

You can get the same laptop with an i5, 960m and no 1tb HDD for £200 less at saveonlaptops. I'd link but my copy and paste isn't working! :P
Not quite as good but still a decent dedicated GPU and a full power quad core CPU

Depending on what you are looking for there are other options, but not cheaper:
£809 for the GTX1050 4GB, 256GB SSD (no mechanical drive) and i5 7300-HQ. Worse processor than this (no hyperthreading, just 4 cores), but battery life will be better and 4GB RAM will be better on the GPU. HDD vs SSD is a toss up depending on your use. 128GB+1TB vs 256GB. Same link as above. You can probably add an extra harddrive, but you can't add more RAM to the GPU, so the 4GB is more future proof.
I just ordered the 1050Ti Dell with an extra 4% cashback (hopefully) through work, so £950 or so all in. The battery life sold me on it. Up to 11 hours with light use (per actual tests), 7 hours or so video, maybe 3 hours gaming. Most others seem to have much worse battery life.

This can easily handle 4K video editing.
You can edit 4K content on a 1080p screen.
You can use an external, colour accurate monitor.
