Seriously, hot+cold system isnt meant to be used like that and unless your alternatives are the same price or cheaper than what has been posted your point is well..... pointless.

I bought the Missions with the Pioneer VSX-531 and they sound brilliant together. Chuck in a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9's and it's a match made in heaven.

Should products contain the same serial numbers across a brand ?

Richer Sounds made me return both speakers even though one was damaged saying speakers are matched at the factory. Some manufacturers show this with same or consecutive serial numbers for the pair. But it seems not to always be the case and Richer now say it isnt for these Missions.

Got these speakers and they are good very clear and bi-directional . Well worth it at 149

Been this price for a while now. Chose the DENON AVRX2300W in the end as you get a lot more for the extra money.

The speakers seem quite good, need to check the dimensions to see if they will fit my living room. I think I will go for a cheaper AV receiver though as I dont think I need some off the fancy stuff like Dolby Atmos/7.2 etc.

Question on the speakers, what is the bass like ? Would it be really necessary to get a sub woofer on day 1 or would
these speakers suffice as an upgrade on tv speakers in the interim?

Good mid range components, a definite step up from the cheap onkyo budget component deals they normally have.

look on richer sounds there is a Yamaha model for 199 RXV381, also some other brands below the 200 quid mark. That said it may still be worth getting this one for future proofing considering it's not that much more expensive.. I'm no expert so we both need to do a little more research.

I'm only using a Cambridge A1 Mk3 which isn't getting the most out of them so opted to wire a sub in aswell. Very happy with the overall sound now. Depending on your amp output you may or may not decide on a sub. Remember these are rear ported aswell.

Yeah in an ideal scenario you would have 5 identical floorstanders in a 5.1 setup. Since that's generally not possible as the centre floorstander will block the screen, the compromise is to use a horizontally mounted centre speaker below or above the screen. And you should always match the same brand and model range in the front. If that's not possible find a centre speaker with the same tweeter. Otherwise the tone of the sound will be different - imagine a movie character walking across the screen, his voice will go from right speaker to centre speaker to left speaker and if the tone doesn't match you will notice it.

If this is your first 5.1 setup, you will notice that the centre channel is the one that is most used in movies hence the importance of getting a good and matched centre speakers. Most centre speakers are compromises because the placement is restrictive. In some cases the centre speaker in the range is not very good when compared with the floorstanders and it's better not to have a centre speaker and rather use the floorstanders to play the centre channel as a 4.1 setup because the floorstanders perform better than the centre speaker when handling centre channel duty.

I don't blame them for asking you to return them as a pair but they won't be matched, not on sonic grounds anyway (possibly to match finishes, serial number records etc). I'd be surprised if you can find matched speakers below a grand.

The speakers do not need to be matched at all, cinemas do not do this, the cinema engineer tests and EQ's the room and adjusts the output to each speaker to achieve the correct sound.

For the front you'd still want to match tonality as much as possible. Unless you want to do a lot of messing around.

Good quality controlled bass doesn't have to mean room shaking... If you want out of control bass those cheap PC speaker 5.1's are a good bet.

i used the have the Creative Cambridge 4.1s for my PC back in the day... they were great.

Good find Buzz. However I really think you should get out more. Yamaha is one of the oldest brands in the audio universe. Apart from audio equipment, they have been making world class musical instruments including concert - level pianos since the 19th century. I'm saving up to buy a 50 year old Yamaha piano and even then I won't have much change left from 2 grand.

guys, is it worth forking out the extra 50 quid for this av receiver over say the 381? and so the speakers lend themselves to being part of. 5.1 setup in the future?

I was being facetious. Guess my point was it would have been hot for me if Denon and Tannoy equivalent. I should have abstained!
