This, and any other new game with the harvest Moon name, are not made by the original development team. A true sequel would be 'Story of Seasons' on 3ds or Rune Factory 4 for a more action oriented HM, game.

So it turns out the Harvest Moon series actually became the Story of Seasons series; Natsume lost the license to port the original Japanese games over to English.
The reason the reviews are so bad is because the real Harvest Moon is now Story of Seasons!

i am not a Harvest moon player as i find the game boring but my wife has played all the harvest moon games and she likes both the new harvest moon and story of seasons she says there different but both still good.
