quite a low output to be shared over 3 usb ports. my phone needs 2.1 amp to fast charge so anything else plugged in would only slow charge or even worse not charge at all because of not enough power.
msmyth to winter_zombie
22 Jun 17#2
2.1amp would leave a 1.3amp overhead for other devices. Granted, you wouldn't be able to charge high charge devices at the same time, but that would be the case for most wall chargers. Also, its £3.50 so for the price I think it's decent. At the end of the day it's down to what your personal needs / budget are.

As I tend to charge my Tablets and/or Phone over night, I guess the lowish power issue wouldn't BE much of an issue, if it's simply a case of lower power = longer charge time

As far as I know all phones will charge at 500mA or 1000mA as that was the original USB spec. As long as you're letting it charge not hammering it with games while at max brightness it'll probably be just fine

Just because it says CE certified doesn't mean it's safe. AFAIK CE is self-certified and obviously faked all the time anyway

The only way to be reasonably sure that a product is safe is to buy from a reputable store, and avoid ebay and amazon traders.
Unscrupulous manufacturers from countries like china will print any mark on their product that they think will boost sales, so quality and compliance marks are only genuinely helpful when a manufacturer of dodgy gear slaps one on that is inappropriate to their product, and even then probably won't be noticed by a purchaser.
I'm no expert, but the exposed live and neutral connectors on the 3 pin adaptor plate on this product pictured in one of the reviews on Amazon which could be touched if the body of the charger was to detach, or someone was idiotic enough to plug the adaptor in unassembled from the main body, makes me think that this probably doesn't comply with uk electrical safety regulations. Also I note another reviewer states the plastic catch that stops the adaptor plate separating once it is attached, snapped off on theirs.
Also it looks like the cover of the charger has started to separate and the body started to melt in a picture posted by one of the reviewers whose charger exploded, so I'd also be concerned that if it blew it might expose live parts, or even catch fire.
You cant really say that. Most supermarkets would be considered "reputable" and often the gear can be risky at best. There are a few stores out there I refuse to buy electronics from because I have purchased enough junk from them to know that anything they sell MIGHT be a risk.
Unless the item is torn-down then no one will ever know if the quality or design is good.
Also, per the negative amazon reviews you pointed out. The melted plug is a huge concern, but it is 2 ports not 3, so obviously not the same device. If the same company then still a worry. As for the 3 pin adapter breaking off, the guy who is talking about that obviously doesn't even know how it fits together as the arrows are pointing to the wrong sections of the plug that he says is broken. Still, IF this breaks when you go to remove it then it would leave exposed connections and that is bad. I have a few of these type of devices and if any of them broke the result would be the same.
Personally I would like to see a tear down of the unit but it doesn't look bad and I would be tempted to try it.

23 Jun 17#23
That video you posted shows the 3 pin plug comes off by just twisting, and he says it comes off easily, so it would seem that that twisting the body while it was plugged in would cause the body to separate exposing the live and neutral connectors!
I don't believe that could be legal in the UK. All the power plugs with detachable uk 3 pins adaptors I own have shielded mains connections on the removable plug pins and lock in place with a catch that has to be depressed which can only be done once the plug has been removed from the socket.
As to the picture of the broken catch there are clearly two catches one at the top, the other at the bottom, he may have incorrectly labelled the opposite slot to the one that the broken catch goes in on his picture, but that doesn't make any odds, the catch is broken and it looks like there is very little plastic to hold the two parts together, so I'm not surprised it has broken.
I must admit I hadn't noticed the melted one is a two usb port version, but it otherwise looks similar, and I'd be surprised if the three port version is made out of different plastic, or has a better secured front cover.
I wouldn't allow one to be used in my house.

The holy grail product I'm looking for is one of these USB adaptors but with a multi-country adapter built in. They do exist with slide-on adaptors but even better would be a well designed multi-country plug.
Yes it's just a pity it's 2.4A presumably across 2 USB sockets on the more compact model. I've discovered that my power banks (used a lot on holiday) need a good 2A from a USB socket to charge in less than 24 hours. At this moment the best option looks like this Betron or similar - I rate Anker as good - plus a world wall socket adapter.

24 Jun 17#30
The 2 USB + mains socket one is rated at 3.4A / 17W shared between the 2 usb sockets and the 4 usb port is 4A.

Cheap chargers tend to product a very noisy supply with lots of voltage spikes, and emit lots of RF interference, either could affect the phone's capacitance sensors.
I'm surprised anyone would spend so much on a phone, but so little on a charger.
There's a good article here, that compares a quality power supply to a shoddy counterfeit one, complete with oscilloscope traces:- righto.com/201…tml
People who now own this charger should read the section on misuse, in particular:-
A test of 27 electrical chargers found that all the eight legitimately branded ones with a reputable name met safety standards, but none of those unbranded or with minor names did, despite bearing the CЄ mark;[13] non-compliant devices were actually potentially unreliable and dangerous, presenting electrical and fire hazards

Is there a version of a cheap/cheapish multi-plug usb charger (similar to that of the OP's Deal), that feeds on CONSTANT 2.0-2.1A to of it's 2-3+ usb connections? (as opposed to the above OP's Dea'l's 'shared amp' thing, etc?).
Thanx. :-)

I believe a high pitched whine in a switched mode power supply is usually from the windings and laminations/ferric core of the transformer vibrating. However, they are usually designed to operate at a frequency above human hearing and may also be coated in glue/resin to dampen them, so I wouldn't expect to hear a whining noise unless they're poor quality or faulty.
send it back, I check on mine and its completely silent even if you put your ear on it...they look quality though, I got two and I'm thinking ordering a couple more..

I don't know much about the regulations, but that front part coming off so easily and revealing the mains contacts immediately tells you all you need to know about how cheaply this unit is designed.
Like you say, any decent chargers have recessed pins on that part of the unit so you can't just touch exposed live pins e.g. the HP touchpad charger

I prefer to use the chargers which came with my phone and tablet. That way I know they're getting the right dose of power. I just take a UK/EU/US adapter and one of those plug in 4 socket jobs and that covers all eventualities.

China Export
A logo very similar to CE marking has been alleged to stand for China Export because some Chinese manufacturers apply it to their products.[17] However, the European Commission says that this is a misconception. The matter was raised at the European Parliament in 2008.[18] The Commission responded that it was unaware of the existence of any "Chinese Export" mark and that, in its view, the incorrect application of the CE marking on products was unrelated to incorrect depictions of the symbol, although both practices took place. It had initiated the procedure to register CE marking as a Community collective trademark, and was in discussion with Chinese authorities to ensure compliance with European legislation.[19]
