I've owned one of these for a while now and have found it to be great value for the money. Downgraded the firmware to 5.1.2 and then locked out the firmware upgrades. Rooted and installed play store. Runs most music apps and IPTV perfectly.

Sorry - for some reason HUKD didn't flag I had a response.
Nothing special to get it working for me. Open VLC, and using the hamburger menu (top left), select the local network option. I'm using an older WD MyBook Live, which has a Twonky server on it - any content in the public shares then just play.

Its really important not to update the tablet when you receive it. The best thing I ever do to this is root it then install open nexus ROM with flashfire app. Its a fantastic android tablet.
The amazon experience is okay but similar to the fire phone it is limited and slow. The stripped down nexus experience is really fast and flexible, if it was not for the size I prefer this to the ipad.

I got one of these recently, its still possible to put android on it, but it auto updates once connects to wifi so you have to install staright away.
This has superior battery life to the tab 3, i think cpu wise its similar though and it has android so its got much nore selection than the FireOS.

13 Jun 17#52
I disagree that its a 'downgrade'. We bought 2 to replace some ageing hudl 2's and they are much better. Admittedly, its mainly because you don't have to charge them every 5 seconds, but that makes them great for long journeys.
Sell your hudl 2 on fleabay and you will likely make enough to buy one of these.

I don't think is now possible. Got my Dad one, probably around the same time as you. Told him, whatever he did, not to allow it to update, guess what?! Apparently the current firmware version no longer allows you to Android-ify it.

Exactly, how is it more than 1.5 years later, these are still selling for the same £35 odd mark? (that's actually quite impressive!) it's like the ONLY Androidified iPadesk Tablet out there or something (as other than the NEXUS Tablets, it's the first time an Android anything has held such 'value' for sooooooo long like that like?, like WOW, WOW, WOW ... )

I have one, its very good for £35. The apps I have installed are ES Manager for installing 3rd Party apps and moving data from the Fires internal memory to SD. BBC iPlayer works for downloads offline, ITV Hub and Firefox Browser. The built in Silk web browser is ok but I found Firefox much better and works with Youtube and seems to render all websites well.
Video playback in Mp4 is fine with inbuilt Video app.
There is less choice than with Google Play or i-Tunes for apps but there are enough things re games and apps. The list of apps can be seen in the top left link from this page https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?docId=1000644603
As others have said it is a £35 tablet and it serves a purpose, if you need more then look for a more expensive device then spend more on a higher spec tablet. I have had mine since Dec 2016, The GooglePlay store Can NOT be side loaded on my device.

My son, who tends to be a bit rough with his gadgets, got one of these a few months back. Build quality seems ok, and the SD card has never been an issue. He also spends a lot of time on YouTube and using a NAS drive (through VLC) also without any problems.

3 questions...
Can anyone confirm whether this tablet can fully integrate with commonly used Google Apps? Namely the following as a start:
Calendar
Mail
Docs
Hangouts etc
Secondly, a friend once told me years ago his Fire Tablet wasn't able to install Skype, has this changed? Or is it still the same?
Finally, apart from the 2 questions above, what else would I (a typical Android user) notice as being different, and most likely dislike, in this Amazon ecosystem?
Cheers!

Got one of there recently to throw in my work bag to catch up on films/tv series when I get half an hour on my commute. The screen was the let down for me in normal use. Seemed sort of out of focus yet when playing films it looks really crisp. Would recommend for using as a media player. And it is a steal at this price.
