If you can post some details by answering the below I'll try to find you a deal tomorrow night that fits
- Maximum absolute budget (ie if I find the best deal possible what would you pay for it)
- What you'd ideally like to pay (ie £150 is what you'd like to pay but you'll go up to £200 for something that's head and shoulders better).
- What sort of homework is your child doing?
- Will they be using it for games? What games (minecraft or football manager)
- Battery life required? How long should it last on battery?
- Size/weight you're after? Smaller to be able to take it places, or something more desk friendly that they won't be carting off so you can't see what they are doing?
I'm going to presume based on that post that you're not IT savvy and therefore will want to have a decent length of warranty on it.

Anyone any idea how good this is? I just need a laptop for my son to do his homework on office.
These elitebooks your son could stand on the lid and it would still work. They are tough as nails.

My X230 arrived yesterday, near mint in condition with a IPS display so very pleased. Much better option than a budget £200 Laptop new.

Managed to get a Lenovo i5 T410 for £119. Arrived today. In absolutely A1 condition. Have always been a bit dubious about online suppliers after buying a naff refurbished laptop from Misco. ITZOO seem to be a cut above the rest. Very impressed with their level of service and the product. If you are thinking of buying a refurbished unit then you should consider ITZOO. Get an SSD upgrade. My only mistake.£38 for a 180gb SSD upgrade would have been cheap. Most stock sold out at the minute.

You don't have to use an adapter. You can get DP to HDMI cables and if you buy like for like a HDMI-HDMI cable costs the same as a DP-HDMI. I have 2 in my server, one goes to the TV and the other goes into my HTC Vive.
There are lots of benefits to go for DP. HDMI really only can offer Ethernet as it's breakout advantage. DP lacks return audio and ethernet. DP also can support a lot more displays and at higher resolutions.

wonder what advantages would DP have over HDMI though... using Thinkpads for years and I have yet to find an advantage. Having to use an adapter all the time is a bit annoying.

If it is anything like my T430, you will need a mini-thunderbolt/mini-displayport to HDMI.

Mini Displayport or VGA. It's a business laptop so will tend to have business features which DP is one of those things businesses look for. Pretty easy to get a DP to HDMI cable if you need it.

Mini-DP to HDMI adapters are a couple of quid. DP is also more versatile since HDMI with the HD4000 will only drive a 1920x1080 display, no higher. With DP we can go as high as 2560x1600.

Remaining battery capacity? TN or IPS display? Considering getting one for the missus as she's currently got a chromebook but is coming across a lot of .docx files that don't play ball with google docs or MS office online.

For the price it's about where it should be. Only real bonus that I'm seeing is that it has the webcam and backlit keyboard which are generally less regularly found on these models and quite hard to confirm as present on most refurb sites. I'd say it was worth it if it did come with the fingerprint reader as well. I've added the full spec to the posting as without it the deal is only ever going to end up cold because people can't see what they are getting for the money.

The going rate for an E6430 would be about £150.
If that's your general budget then I'd also add in the T430 to your short list of options to consider along with the HP Elitebook 8470p.
The latter of these I've found with slight more RAM and again for less money than this supplier.
