The ones bragging about how light the weights are probably sat there with a beer in one hand and a pork pie in the other.

You don't have to limit yourself to only using the plates that come with the bar. You can add more/ heavier plates for the gainz

Oh look... Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to post a comment. It must be great to be able to lift really heavy weights. Not everyone is as strong a you. Plus for anyone wanting to gain strength, or recover from injury, these are great value. Explain to me how boasting about how strong you are does you any good. Go on. I'd love to hear.
oqey to you_gotta_be_kidding

I started with an argos 15kg dumb sets, today almost 5 years later I can curl with 65kg, 6 reps 3 sets even more depending on time.
But the most effective for me is 45kg, 15 reps 3-4 sets.
Everyone needs to start somewhere, to folks reading some bragging comments, ignore those. Make a start with whatever you can afford and move up when you can.
It's not about HOW MUCH you can lift, but HOW YOU lift it that counts.

Q&A section says bar limited to 18KG. Bars supplies with vinyl discs are rarely good enough to upgrade.
Danze1984
6 May 17 4 #10
At the same time, sets like this, the bars aren't rated to hold all that much weight and you will outgrow it in no time.

Also, this set on Amazon is the same price, free delivery, and has 12KG more with a weight limit of 60KG.

Those weights look really big for the weight. I have a similar set of dumbbells and they just feel huge even though they aren't that heavy. I'm not very good with this stuff but I think you want something like steel ? to not be so cumbersome
Haircut_100 to chrisredmayne
6 May 17 1 #16
That's vinyl weights for you, the weight discs are much bigger compared to their cast iron equivalent. One of the problems with vinyl weights is that you can soon get to a point where you want to add more weight discs to your bar or dumbbell but run out of space to do so fairly quickly.

That's just the bar!! The Argos deal includes the weights!
brilly
6 May 17 1 #21
the bar is about 4kg - its going to take more than 18kg but if using the supplied weights you dont have much room anyway and its safer to just say 18kg is the max to save them hassle of rating it

why are so many people offended? This is a very light set and won't be of much use even for beginners after a couple of months, people are simply advising on the worth of buying something like this in the long run regardless whether it's cheap. No different than advising about computers imo.
To put things into perspective, an Olympic bar with no plates will weigh the same if not more than this whole set.
oqey to fubob11
6 May 17 1 #35
Don't you think some people deserve the courage to even make a start? Even if it is 10kg? It doesn't matter. Gotta start somewhere. There is much more than just lifting heavy weights, getting the movements right is better.
People starting small and starting right should be encouraged. It's up to them on how they accelerate to heavier weights.
kasam1640
6 May 17 #34
its concrete/sand weights they have the tendancy to break and leak
flipper79
6 May 17 2 #36
I know people can be really obnoxious when it comes to weights, but honestly an 18kg EZ curl bar with no room to add more is just a waste of money. Pretty much any beginner will be comfortable at that weight and need to increase it after a week or 2...and in the highly unlikely event you're not comfortable with that weight you're really gonna struggle with those weight increments when you do want to improve. Put the money towards a good set of cast iron dumbells. Not only can you add more plates with more subtle weight variations but you can do considerably more exercises and they also force you to make more use of stabiliser muscles which is really important as a beginner. You'll pay more but you won't be anywhere near as likely to waste money.

Nothing against the deal. If it's a deal it's a deal...but that doesn't mean the product is any good in the first place.
oqey
6 May 17 #37
I hope you realize that for some ppl, due to health reasons or other issues may not need to left more than 18kg? Some ppl, doing comfortable sets and reps with 10kg is a delight.
This weight is absolutely perfect for majority of people out there. People have different goals in life, not everyone wants to be like Arnie.

6 May 17 1 #40
flipper79 has pretty much covered my reason for my comment. I'm no Arnold and wouldn't want to be either, infact I'm very out of shape and am doing something about it. I started lifting 20kg and was at 40kg within a few weeks, this set may be good for some, or rehabilitation, elderly or as per my comment kids (my 6 year old son is lifting 10kg now, he loves working out with me).

if people didn't put comments like mine then you'd get people buying this without realising it's got no long term use for the majority.

6 May 17 1 #44
Worth spending a bit more for iron weights in my opinion. Will last longer.
mugen6
6 May 17 1 #45
90% of people who buy this product will use it a few times and then store it in the attic/garage before it ends up as landfill. Yes you can sell it on, but the next person will do the same. Plastic garbage like this should not exist. Some things are worth spending a little more on. You can get a 2" diamater 4ft or 5ft Olympic bar that will last forever for £30-35 (cheaper 2nd hand) and will take standard 2" plates, so you adjust as you get stronger. The 5ft bar weighs 12.5kg by itself anyway, so you're not far off the useless 18kg target of this thing.

Even if you think 18kg is the most you'd ever need, why not buy something good quality that will last for decades. Your grandkids could be using your old iron weights in 30 years - I guarantee this plastic junk will be landfill long before then.

What I'm saying is, one man's aphrodisiac is another man's allergic reaction, regardless of proportion, object, item, environment, etc.
Just because you find something useless doesn't mean it has no value to others.
I don't care whether it's durable, or made of egg. My point is this item, regardless of price is perfectly adequate for some
People.

PlantBuilt to Jammy212
7 May 17 #62
Should still be in stock.

And tbh, you don't need to lift super heavy to build muscles. You can just keep increasing reps until your budget allows an upgrade.

You'd probably get better results doing that than the try hard ego lifters you see at the gym trying to throw the bar up with their hips cos they can't curl the heavy weight they're trying to show off with.

Irrelevant. I made a claim and he replied "WRONG" and offered an n=1 annecdote about his life in return. My claim was based on more factors than 1 single person's experience. Happy to be proven wrong though, so please go ahead and present your facts/data/estimations.
brilly
8 May 17 1 #65
not really irrelevant
perhaps he is correct in saying that you were wrong, perhaps to give a percentage without any data is equally wrong
but i am happy to look at your data
mugen6
8 May 17 #66
Like I said, my claim is based on a number of factors - his was based on anecdotal evidence. He did not attempt to refute my claim, he just said I was "wrong". This is a pointless statement.

Suppose I claimed that beer is the most popular drink amoung young men, and then someone comes along and says "wrong! I don't drink beer, I drink whisky". Does that make my statement wrong?
brilly
8 May 17 1 #67
yes and i am happy to look at these factors to check the validity of the claim

it wouldn't prove your statement wrong, but that lack of proof wouldn't mean your statement wasnt actually wrong.. .especially if you failed to back it up
mugen6
8 May 17 #68
Great, so we both agree that my statement probably wasn't wrong. Let's move on with our lives. Life would be improved all around if people understood that their anecdotes mean very little in terms of the balance of probability.
brilly
8 May 17 1 #69
we could probably agree that you plucked the 90% figure out of thin air in an aid to reinforce your own biased opinion but with no data to back it
on balance its very likely that your statement is wrong as it would be pretty lucky to guess the exact figure
mugen6
8 May 17 #70
Nobody has data on this, so no one should say anything, right? Go away you boring person. I was trying to help people with saving their money by suggesting an alternative product that would be better value for money in the long term, but you and your anecdote loving friend just love to argue.
Dantooine
8 May 17 #71
Popped by to read the comments - just as ridiculous as usual!
brilly
8 May 17 1 #72
funny how when your own argument is applied to you that you have a little fit about it

ofc you can comment, as long as you provide your opinion as that... opinion... and not present it as a fact

imo this set is useless really but i would guess (yes guess) that the same proportion would find an olympic version as 'useless'
you just state 'a bar' which would suggest a straight bar which are bad for curls and at your price would be poor for other lifts and too short to be caged anyway
if you mean an ez bar its a big expense to just do curls with your wrists fixed in a potentially unnatural position
niche product, could use dumbells which could be used with other exercises
many people wont graduate to olympic weights anway either from lacking the strength or from doing the heavier lifts in a gym environment
ofc its up to people to decide on what they need
mugen6
8 May 17 #73
I'm not even going to attempt to read that wall text missing punctuation and basic grammar. Captial letters are just a key stroke away.
Here's some data for you: 28,600 posts, which means you have to have a little say about everything. Get a job or a hobby.
brilly to mugen6
8 May 17 1 #74
oh first i was 'boring' for using your own argument
then a lack of a dot or 2 renders the further info too difficult to refute
and if capital letters are only a keystroke away then why didn't you capitalise your own name? low self esteem?

also 28600 posts doesn't mean a little about everything, it just means 28600 posts with an undisclosed distribution unless you need to stalk further to try and make at least one valid factual point in this thread?

thanks for the advice re: a job and hobby,
but before you call my mother fat i'll nip in there and say that she is certainly within healthy bmi range so save your breath

still... you dont have any other points so by all means hypocritically whine about my grammar to cover your inadequacies
mugen6
8 May 17 #77
I just had a quick look at your post history. Nothing but whining. Whining about search feature being useless, whining about infractions, whining about faulty links in the HUKD site. Call it "stalking" if it makes you feel better.

I think you just come here to vent your frustrations. I'll stick to offering advice on subjects that I am familiar with.
brilly
8 May 17 1 #78
so... in fact you dont have any points about this thread and your sole contribution is to stalk me? awesome work fella
but why not get a job or a hobby instead? :man:
anyway, as you have nothing to add i dont think i need to bother proving you wrong again - toodle pip.
