Bargain price and I heated this deal BUT.

It's beyond me why anyone will get this and not the Xiaomi Yeelight, which has 65 million colours and doesn't require a hub. Perhaps it's a brand and marketing thing.

Well, horses for courses I guess but I have the Yeelight and I'm quite happy with them.

£30 at Asda and screw white hue bulbs are £4 there too, get 2x bayonet adapters from Ikea for £1. Iris and light strip etc also half price. Just bought into the Hue system and noticed after Ikea do a smart lighting system where the colour temperature of the bulb is actually adjustable.

Ordered a couple of sets, thank you. I presume there's no difference between these bulbs and the ones in the £100+ set of 3x non-colour ones? Other than fitting type and quantity of course.
kpmatthews to Rob_1304
22 May 17 1 #25
Yes they are different, these bulbs only do warm white, the other starter set has tunable white, so it does warm white, cool white, daylight
shakerstevens to Rob_1304
22 May 17 #32
In those more expensive sets they will be the white ambience bubs, where you can adjust the temperature as well as dimming (i..e the warm soft whites, the sharp blue whites etc) where as the one in this deal are the basic dimmable ones - still useful but you might want different ones for different rooms.
(i.e. I use ones like this for hall way and the landing, but ambience ones for bedroom and the lounge where you might want the soft lights in the evening, but the option for bright white when reading books etc).
Rob_1304
22 May 17 #13
Oh and can you daisychain the hubs for better coverage or should I just sell the second hub?
0dd8a11 to Rob_1304
22 May 17 1 #18
Yes you can an I needed to for up stairs, the bathroom had 4 lights in it and normally 1 random one would miss the signal from the hub downstairs.
bluetba to Rob_1304

the bulbs themselves increase coverage as they act as repeaters, a 2nd bridge will achieve nothing that I'm aware of.

Thanks for posting. Can anyone comment on the colour these produce? Is it a warm white light, or the sterile fluorescent type you'd get in a morgue? Do I need the white ambience bulbs for a nicer warmer colour?
kpmatthews to Orbdemon
22 May 17 1 #28
These are warm. Personally prefer the daylight effect you can get with the ambiance bulbs, but we have a couple of these bulbs for kids room and bathroom
Single ambiance bulbs are £30 rrp, but we used adaptors
spruceyb to Orbdemon

It does. Hue should "mesh" but I've found that they didn't very well. Resolved with a second hub for upstairs.
0dd8a11
22 May 17 1 #21
Also these bulbs are not good lights, they don't go down dim, and not very bright, fine for rooms you don't use and to get you started but you will want to replace them with the full colour or tuneable whites for living room etc
Rob_1304
22 May 17 1 #22

In most cases the Yeelight is the better value option. When I bought my hue set up a few months ago I wasn't aware of Yeelight. As far as I can see the only reasons for hue instead would be:
Apple HomeKit compatible
Google Home compatible (Yeelight however is Amazon Alexa compatible)
Remote control accessories for the Hue. I'm not sure if Yeelight have their own official hardware remotes, or is it App only?
Hue lights sync with Ambilight TVs
I'm not sure how well the Geofencing and control of your lights works when you are away from home with a yeelight? Although it supports IFTTT so I guess it could all be set up easily.

Thanks for the information - much appreciated.

The Yeelight is app only as far as I know. You can turn it off using the switch though and it retains wifi login information and connects when you turn it back on.

The app is a bit lacking but as you rightly said IFTTT support is a game changer and opens the door to a lot of possibilities.

On another note, I have Hive heating at home and I'm struggling to understand how location-based triggers can be useful. If I'm away from home, it knows that and it can turn heating off (if I choose to); however, that will leave the wife and kids freezing because it doesn't know they're still there :-) I haven't seen a system smart enough to trigger "away from home" mode when we're all outside, not just when one person is.
charles6
22 May 17 2 #47
You need to use IFTTT. Ignore the hive app geolocation it is entirely useless.

IFTTT uses life 360 which is a family tracking app, you setup users like you, your wife & kids if they have smart phones and it detects when the last person leaves and turns off the heating and when the first person arrives home it will turn it back on to the preset temperature you define.

I have used it for about 6 weeks now and works considerably better than the official hive app.

FYI for those looking for a cheaper smart lighting solution. I bought 4 Xiaomi Yeelight RGBW E27 Smart LED Bulbs from Gearbest at £13 each. I can't compare them to Hue bulbs as I don't have any of those, but I am impressed with the Yeelights. They can go quite dim, and also definitely bright enough for my home, and they have a reasonable gamut of colours. There is no hub needed, and they connected easily to my wifi. The Yeelight app is ok (which also has a Tasker plugin), but I usually control the lights via Google Home. They also work with IFTTT. The bulbs are a bit longer however than a traditional bulb. I've been using them now for 3 months and so far no problems. I also had no problem with Gearbest (they arrived in a week and I didn't pay any customs tax).

Totally agree ! And its the same issue with a Philips Hue system. I'm live at home on my own so it works well 99% of the time - I can see the lights come on as I drive down the street - a nice warm welcome - but there has been 2 or 3 occasions when friends are at home, I nip out to the shops and by the time I've driven to the bottom of the road they are left in darkness ! ooops !
shakerstevens
22 May 17 #55
They don't do the normal (bayonet) fitting on these plain white bulbs. I've only seen it on the much more expensive colour ambience ones. Better to get the adaptors that people here have mentioned - the ikea ones work great for me.

Other than the fact that these bulbs plug into lights, are there any benefits to getting into the Hue system versus others such as WeMo or even TP-Link smart sockets etc?

Yes it works fine with my Google home. And also with Apple siri on the iPhone.

shakerstevens
22 May 17 #65
These white bulbs can have their brightness controlled in the app (i.e dimmable)
The white ambience bulbs are more useful with different colour temperatures as well as brightness control.
And the colour ambience even more so - with the obvious difference having a full colour range.
Can't speak for WeMo but my TP-Link smart plug is not Apple Home kit compatible - Philips hue is.
Compatible/syncs with Philips Ambilight TV (I appreciate this is a limited market!)
Physical accessories such as the dimming remote and the hue tap are useful if you want to still control lights via something physical, not just an App. (although I don't understand the justification for the tap being double the price of the remote, yes they do slightly different things but the remote is great for my needs)
dr_joolz
22 May 17 #66
This might be a dumb Q: Do these go on automatically you switch on the conventional light switch? or do i have to flip the physical switch and then use my mobile to switch them on?!
stevem999
22 May 17 1 #67
many thanks for the thoughts. I was hoping there was some killer aspect of a lighting-only system like Hue that would make it more attractive than using smart sockets etc for automation. I accept dimming and colour temp are specific lighting matters, but I don't think I'd ever use it, but I can see more benefit in plugging lamps and other appliances into smart sockets.

Philips Hue bulbs should work with Google Assistant-equipped smartphones and Google Home.

mikej
22 May 17 #71
The lights need to be switched on at the wall switch in order for them to be controlled via the hub and app. If the light switch is off and you turn it on, the bulbs are set to come on at 100% brightness by default.
mikej
22 May 17 1 #72

22 May 17 #77
You can still use your light switch to turn them on and off. Each time you do that, they will reset back to standard light level. If you had colour ones, they'd reset to white. It is best to have the light switch permanently on on then use your Google Home, Echo, Dot or phone to control the on/off & dimming/and colour if you have coloured ones.

I have found that its kind of a pain to take my phone out to do this so am now waiting for a deal on a Google home so I can just dole out my orders on the fly
mikej
22 May 17 1 #78
You can't adapt an E27 bulb to fit that type of light fitting - you need to look at their GU10 bulbs and starter kits.
andybriggs03
22 May 17 #79
£49.99 for one lightbulb lol
mikej
22 May 17 #80
Yes - the colour versions are very expensive, especially when you consider that these lights are often grouped in reasonable numbers. I've got 4 alone in one of my light fittings and kitchen fitters seem keen on covering kitchen ceilings in large numbers of GU10 downlighters !

They do white ambience versions for £25 (2 for £45) but I don't think I'll be replacing my GU10s just yet, even at that price

22 May 17 #83
Can u set the Yeelight to come on at a time and then go off ?
alphaomega16
22 May 17 #84
I have not had to touch my light switches since I installed them, the hallway lights and kitchen are on a timer that you can adjust on the phone to come on at midnight and upstairs is a nightlight, downstairs is 10% and kitchen is 30% so you don't have to find switches in the dark in the middle of the night or get hit in the face with full power of the bulbs.

They are set to turn off around 5am now when it starts to get light, also you can use the app on your phone if you suddenly remember you left a light on and turn it off whilst out and about which is also nice if you are on holiday or something you can turn them on and off at will.

PS
If your wife has a good sense of humor you can pretend your house is haunted by messing with the brightness when mates come round.
mikej
22 May 17 #85
Out of interest, is there an option on the app to turn all the lights off in the house at once, or do you have to do it one room at a time ?

ReviewChimp
22 May 17 #88
A friend at work, who turned me onto the Yeelights, uses these adaptors to fit his Yeelights in the kitchen. Obviously they don't sit flush like the GU10 lamps, but he's not particularly bothered by that.
redllama
22 May 17 #89
Deal has ended now ! :disappointed:
mikej to redllama
22 May 17 #91
Yes, it's technically possible but I guess it depends on what type of light fitting the GU10 bulb is in ? For example - if it's a kitchen or bathroom downlighter where the light fitting and GU10 bulb are flush with the ceiling, then using one of those adaptors and having almost an entire E27 Hue bulb hanging down below ceiling level would look a bit odd, to say the least !

Adapting E27 to B22 or vice versa is less of an issue, because both bulbs are around the same size and the shades/light fittings for those bulbs are often large enough that an adaptor can be accommodated.

It's a shame they don't do the GU10 hue bulb in a £15 white-only version, like the B22 and E27s
shakerstevens
22 May 17 1 #90
Yes that is definitely correct. The buttons are not easy to press however and that is the reason why. They should call it a "press hard" rather than a "tap"

To be honest I think most people install these in multiple, in lamps, which you leave switched on all the time, and then turn them on and off with the app or Echo/Google home. If you just have a single ceiling light then yes, you will still be able to switch it on and off at the switch but just having one Philips Hue bulb is pretty much pointless imo.

Sounds good any discount codes for gearbest.com

Can u get a adaptor for these
anewman
22 May 17 #98
Yes you can switch them all off in one go. You can even have different settings for "at home" and "away". The app is meant to be able to automatically switch your lights on when you get home using GPS, and off when you leave, but it doesn't seem to work on my phone. It's also possible to switch lights on and off when you're not at home, but only with the Philips app or timers.
anewman
22 May 17 #99
I've just installed them and am still in the reach for the wall switch mode sometimes. Generally you leave the light on all the time and control it with timers etc. However, if you do turn the switch off and back on the bulb comes on full brightness.
png666
22 May 17 #100
They go on & off as a normal bulb.

However I would imagine that like the colour ones they will default to max brightness - It's a safety feature.

With the colour ones they also default back to white.
me_lee
22 May 17 1 #101
Yes, defaults to full brightness and colour ones default to warm white.

A bit naughty of Amazon to cut this one short... one minute it has hours left to run and the next it had 2 minutes...

I guess it was selling too many for them to keep the price that low :disappointed:.

If anyone snagged one then some great places to start messing around with are IFTTT or on your phone with Google Assistant (their AI) - probably Homekit / Siri as well if you're Apple flavoured but I'm Android so not 100%.
refaey
22 May 17 #102
Yes you can.

There are also different modes like romance, sun-rise and sun-set emulation,...etc.

I tried mine with IFTTT today and it adds another level of automation. The Yeelight is also compatible with Amazon Alexa.

At £12-£13, they're not much more expensive than a bog-standard branded LED light.

I have my home office lit with Yeelight and I will gradually use more for the rest of the house. You can group them too, so you can have a few in the bedroom, put then in a group called "Bedroom" then get the app to treat the group as one unit so they all do the same thing at the same time.
me_lee
22 May 17 1 #103

However, these are only £15.99

Sorry - when I said 'white only', I meant the cheaper warm white (2700K) bulbs, of which there isn't currently a GU10 version.

The ones you linked to are the 'white ambience' versions (which are equivalent in price to the white ambience versions of the B22 and E27 bulbs)

Thanks for the heads-up on the Innr bulbs - might have to check out the 3rd party alternatives if I'm going to expand the collection.
me_lee
22 May 17 #107
I've got some Innr bulbs (although not GU10's). They are very good.

If you don't care about the 'internet of things' (i.e. IFTTT, voice control, etc) and simply want bulbs that can be remote controlled via a smartphone app or a physical remote within the house then take a squint at IKEA Tradfri which are very reasonably priced and are rumoured to be getting an update to be Hue compatible "at some point".

If I set the bulb to a soft dim glow. Ideal for our babies nursery at night and was to switch off at the traditional wall switch. What happens when we come in at night to tend to him if he wakes and flick the switch? Does it remember its setting and come on dim. Or is this when a safety feature come into place and it comes on full brightness?

At 3am we don't want to be faffing with phone or taking to siri etc waking everyone else up to turn the lights on (i.e. having not switching the light off at the wall).

I'm not clear if the safety, full brightness feature is only invoked when the bulb was switched off in the app and then on at the wall, or if its when the wall switch is toggled twice.

Can anyone clear this up?

I haven't picked my set up yet but, from what I've read, if you switch the lights off with the app, then the wall switch will still be 'on' so in order to turn the lights back on with the switch and not the app, you'll have to turn the switch off and then on again and they'll default to full brightness.

One possible way to overcome this situation would be to buy a Hue motion sensor, which turns the light back on at a pre-programmed setting when it senses movement, without needing to touch the wall switch. They also do a tap switch and dimmer switch, both off which would allow you to control the lights without your phone.

It comes on at full brightness when turned off/on at the switch.

You probably want the £20 dimmer (or £30 in a kit with extra bulb).

You can then also use the Timed Off application under Hue Labs in Hue app which allows you to turn on your selected light at whatever brightness you want then turn off after a set time.

Another option is to use an Android phone with Nfc buy some cheap NFC stickers and use the app HueSwitch NFC

Or get the motion sensor.
